Situation Overview

Politics: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the United Nations Food Systems Summit to address food insecurity in the country. Yasin Haji Mohamud Hiir Faratoon was elected as the new chairman of the House of Representatives in Somaliland. The Director General of the Somali Immigration and Nationality Agency inspected passport issuance activities. Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre held a meeting with members of Parliament to address conflicts in Las Anod and political issues in Puntland. Three non-executive directors of the Somali central bank resigned. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia discussed cooperation with Russia’s Foreign Minister. Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi announced a presidential pardon for 388 prisoners. The SSC community called for political interactions with the Elders of SSC-Khaatumo. The Minister of Defence visited military institutions in Qatar. Security: Amid ongoing clashes and security challenges in Somalia, Al-Shabaab militants successfully took control of Goofgaduud after clashing with the regional army. Heavy fighting was reported at the Arbacow military base near Mogadishu. UNOPS handed over two police stations to authorities in Puntland, marking progress in the Joint Police Programme. In Mogadishu, the former Agriculture Minister of Hirshabele, Hassan Ahmed Muudeey, was killed by Al-Shabaab militants. Additionally, a militia from the Garxajis clan expressed their intention to combat the allegedly corrupt Somaliland government and showed support for defectors from Goojacade.
