260807 Advisory: Smash-and-grab attacks targeting motorists in South Africa

UNCLASSIFIED // OPEN SOURCE BASED Date: 07 August 2026

Smash-and-grab incidents remain a persistent and opportunistic threat across South Africa. Criminals target stationary or slow-moving vehicles at robots, stop streets, congested intersections, and near shopping centres or petrol stations. They smash a window (usually the passenger side) and rapidly seize phones, handbags, laptops, or other visible valuables before fleeing on foot or by vehicle. These attacks are fast, often occur in broad daylight, and rely on the element of surprise and driver hesitation.

Keep valuables out of sight, stay alert at every stop, and never leave items on seats — prevention is far more effective than reaction.

IF YOU ENCOUNTER A SMASH-AND-GRAB ATTEMPT

Do:

  • Immediately drive forward if it is safe to do so (even through a red robot if necessary to escape the immediate threat).
  • Sound your hooter continuously to attract attention.
  • Keep your windows closed and doors locked.
  • Call 10111 or your armed response as soon as you are clear of the scene.
  • Note any description of the suspects (clothing, direction of flight, vehicle details if any) once you are safe.

Do NOT:

  • Open your door or window to confront the attackers.
  • Attempt to retrieve items or fight back — your safety comes first.
  • Chase the suspects.
  • Remain stationary arguing or assessing damage while still vulnerable.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN A VICTIM

Do:

  • Move to a safe, well-lit, populated location as quickly as possible.
  • Contact SAPS (10111) and open a case.
  • Notify your bank or mobile network provider immediately if cards, phones, or banking apps were taken so accounts can be frozen.
  • Contact your insurance company and retain all documentation.
  • Inform your armed response or community safety group.

Do NOT:

  • Delay reporting in the hope of recovering items yourself.
  • Post detailed information about the incident on social media while emotions are high (this can compromise investigations).
  • Leave the scene without noting basic details if it is safe to do so.

GENERAL PREVENTION AND SAFETY TIPS

  • Always lock doors and keep windows fully closed the moment you enter the vehicle, even for short trips.
  • Place handbags, phones, laptops, shopping bags, and any valuables in the boot before you start driving or as soon as you get in — never leave them on seats or the floor where they are visible.
  • Be especially vigilant at robots, stop streets, and congested intersections. Scan your surroundings and the pavement on both sides.
  • Avoid using your phone or looking down while stationary in traffic.
  • Leave enough space between your vehicle and the one in front so you can manoeuvre if needed.
  • When approaching shopping centres, petrol stations, or known high-risk intersections, prepare by ensuring valuables are already secured out of sight.
  • Prefer well-lit, busy routes where possible, particularly after dark.
  • If you regularly carry work equipment or high-value items, consider using a less obvious bag and keeping it in the boot.
  • Teach family members, especially new or younger drivers, these habits as standard practice.

REPORTING SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY OR INCIDENTS

  • Emergency: 10111 (SAPS)
  • Your local police station
  • Armed response / private security provider
  • Community safety or neighbourhood watch WhatsApp groups (for awareness, not as a substitute for official reporting)
  • Crime Stop: 08600 10111

Report suspicious individuals loitering near robots or repeatedly approaching vehicles. Early information helps disrupt patterns.

LEGAL AND COMMUNITY REMINDERS

Smash-and-grab is a form of robbery. Do not take the law into your own hands. Accurate, timely reporting assists SAPS in identifying hotspots and patterns. Support local community safety initiatives and encourage others to secure their valuables out of sight — collective habits reduce opportunities for these crimes.
