Crime Map

The Heatmap illustrates the distribution of reported contact crimes by the South African Police Service (SAPS) across various precincts in South Africa.  Each precinct is colour-coded based on crime levels.

The total number of precincts is sorted numerically and divided int four groups, each representing 25% (a quatre) of the precincts.

  • The first 25% represents the precincts with the lowest crime rates, marked in green.
  • The second 25% represents the next lowest crime rates, marked in yellow.
  • The third 25% represents the middle range, marked in orange.
  • The final 25% represents the precincts with the highest crime rates, marked in red.

In addition to these four divisions, there is a separate classification for the top 30 precincts with the highest crime rate, which are marked in dark maroon. These 30 stations are considered the most crime-ridden, based on data provided by SAPS, and are distinguished from the 25% divisions. SAPS has acknowledged underreporting of certain crimes and the potential for crime to be recorded in precincts other than where they actually occurred.  The map can be uses to assess the safety of areas you may be traveling to or residing in. Additional features, such as sorting by specific crime types and other metrics, will incorporate in future updates.
