ETHIOPIA – ADDIS ABABA – ADDIS ABABA – ANNOUNCEMENT 04 MAR 2022 (01:30)

The United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council has selected the former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, to lead a panel of experts investigating human rights violations committed in the conflict in northern Ethiopia. This follows as Ethiopian Federal troops have been engaged in armed conflict with Tigrayan forces since November 2020, with multiple reports of atrocities having been committed by all sides. The Council voted to establish an independent investigative commission to evaluate the alleged violations and identify perpetrators. Bensouda and the panel are expected to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the alleged violations, collect and preserve evidence, to identify those responsible where possible. The team is expected to brief the Council during its mid-year session and present a written report towards the end of 2022.
