The Amhara Regional State Government announced the resumption of cross border trade and the movement of people at the Metema border between Gallabat, Sudan and Ethiopia. This follows after Sudan closed the border accusing Ethiopian militiamen of carrying out attacks against Sudanese customs officers. In January 2022, Ethiopian and Sudanese military officials held talks and agreed to form joint border patrols in the border crossing areas between the two countries. The Gellabat Customs Office Head, Mohamed Madid, stated that security forces of the two countries should work together to solve security problems in the region, including in areas of information exchange and joint survey to ensure mutual security.
