SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 03 JUN 2022
• VIRGINIA – 03 JUN 2022 (00H25) Renergen Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Stefano Marani announced the company’s expected plans for the construction of their Virginia gas project. Marani stated that the project aims to produce all of South Africa’s helium requirements and export the balance of production. Marani further stated that phase 1 of the project is to supply local helium needs while phase 2 is expected to supply between 5% and 10% of the global demand for helium. Marani noted that phase 2 is expected to commence in 2025.
• BLOEMFONTEIN – 03 JUN 2022 (12H50) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is expected to celebrate its 9th Anniversary on Saturday, 30 July 2022, at the Dr Molemela Stadium from 11H00. The EFF Commander in Chief (CIC), Julius Malema, is expected to address the EFF members during the celebration.

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 03 JUN 2022
• PRETORIA/ TSHWANE – 03 JUN 2022 (00H55) Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, announced the signing of the first three Power Purchase Agreements (PPA’s) under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMI4P) in Centurion. Mantashe stated that the Norwegian Renewable Energy Company Scatec entered a 20-year agreement with Eskom to dispatch 150 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the national power grid between 05H00 and 21H30 daily. Mantashe further stated that the projects are expected to cost R1,884.61 per MW/ hour compared to the R23,000 per MW/ hour that Eskom is currently paying. Mantashe noted that 4,968 work opportunities are expected to be created during the construction and operation of the projects.
• VEREENIGING – 03 JUN 2022 (06H00) Johannesburg Water announced a scheduled 24-hour water shutdown today, 03 June 2022. The time will be used to install a new non-return valve on the pump set at the Vereeniging Water Treatment Plant and to tie in the newly installed pipeline with the existing pipeline. Areas that will be affected include Fairland, Northcliff, Blackheath, Berario, Kelland, Weltevreden Park, Rampart Ridge, Randparkrif and parts of Randburg.
• SPRINGS – 03 JUN 2022 (07H20) Protest reported on Nagtegaal Road and Clydesdale Road. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Police have fired stun grenades in an attempt to disperse the demonstrators. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. • MIDRAND – 03 JUN 2022 (09H50) Protest expected by members affiliated with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) in the Hlanganani region today, 03 June 2022, at Xtremetec. NUMSA is expected to protest due to the Tshwane Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Agency that changed the conditions of employment by implementing a shift pattern without consulting the union or employees. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• RANDBURG – 03 JUN 2022 (10H20) UPDATE Protest reported outside the Randburg Magistrate’s Court ahead of Malema and Mbuyiseni Ndlozi court appearance. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene. (06H05) The Commander in Chief (CIC) of the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF), Julius Malema, is expected to appear at the Randburg Magistrate Court today, 03 June 2022, from 09H00. Malema is expected to appear at the court for the hearing on the matter of the Policeman, who in 2018 allegedly denied Malema entry into the final resting place of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
• KEMPTON PARK – 03 JUN 2022 (10H30) UPDATE Demonstrations reported outside Comair offices. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police have been dispatched. (06H10) Protest expected at the Comair office on Fortress Road in Rhodesfield today, 03 June 2022, from 09H00 by the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA). Demonstrators are expected to demand the resignation of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Glenn Orsmond and the removal of the Business Rescue Practitioner (BRP) Richard Ferguson from Redford Calital. This follows the suspension of British Airways and Kulula national flights. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the protest. Police will be dispatched to the area.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 03 JUN 2022 (11H15) UPDATE Demonstrations reported outside the Israel Embassy. The demonstrators are protesting to demand justice for Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. (06H15) Protest expected by members affiliated with the Congress of the South African Trade Union (COSATU), South African Communist Party (SACP), African National Congress (ANC) and Africa for Palestine are expected to protest today, 03 June 2022, at the Israel Embassy from 10H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest in solidarity with the Palestinians. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• JOHANNESBURG – 03 JUN 2022 (13H00) Protest expected by the members of the Forgotten Nation on Thursday, 16 June 2022, at the Hector Peterson Memorial from 10H00. • CARLETONVILLE – 03 JUN 2022 (14H00) UPDATE NUM and AMCU are holding a mass meeting with mineworkers at the Driefontein Mine stadium currently. The location has been changed to Driefontein Mine stadium from the Union Buildings. (09H20) The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) are expected to hold a meeting with mineworkers at the Union Buildings today, 03 June 2022, from 09H00. The unions are expected to discuss developments in the Sibanye Stillwater strike. Mineworkers have been protesting for salary increases.
• BENONI – 03 JUN 2022 (14H40) UPDATE A group of armed suspects bombed an armoured vehicle. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. Police have closed Puttfontein Road at the Kingsway Road intersection for investigation. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (14H20) Cash in transit (CIT) robbery reported on Puttfontein Road in the East Rand area. Shots have been fired. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area. Police have been dispatched to the scene.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 03 JUN 2022 (15H40) Police Minister Bheki Cele has released the quarter crime statistics for 2021/ 2022 today, 03 June 2022. The overall statistics show increased levels of crime in the first three months of the year. In the three months of reporting, a 22.2% increase in murder was recorded. A total of 1,107 more people were killed in South Africa between January and March 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. Out of the 6,083 people killed in the country, 898 of them were women, and 306 were children under the age of 17 years. The murder of children recorded a 37.2% increase in the period of reporting. Arguments, vigilantism, revenge or retaliation and robberies remain the top four causative factors of these deaths. All sexual offences recorded a 13.7% increase, with contact sexual offences recording the only decrease in this crime category. In the first three months of this year, 10,818 people were sexually assaulted in South Africa. A total of 4,653 sexual assaults took place at the home of the victim or the home of the perpetrator. All Property Related crimes increased by 0.1%, and burglary at non-residential premises declined by 6.4%. Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) assault figures have shown increases, with 6,575 more cases reported during this reporting period. A total of 42,992 cases of GBH assault and 45,746 cases of common assault were opened with the Police in the three months of reporting. Out of the 42,992 cases of GBH assault, 1,937 were children under 17 years. Arguments, road rage, intervention in a fight and robberies were some of the leading causes of the GBH assault. A total of 3,306 kidnapping cases were opened with the Police. This crime trend has shown an increase with over 1,700 more cases reported to the Police compared to the same comparative period. Most of the kidnapping cases were highjacking, robbery and sexual assault-related. The top three police stations with the highest reported kidnapping cases were Kempton Park, Heidelberg stations in Gauteng and Delmas police station in Mpumalanga.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 03 JUN 2022 (17H00) The City of Tshwane stated that it continues to investigate chemical pollution in the greater East Lynne area. The City of Tshwane, together with national and provincial government officials, have been investigating complaints of a chemical smell in the greater East Lynne, Jan Niemand Park, Derdepoort and Eersterust area. Investigations by Environmental Management Inspectors (EMIs), Air Quality Management, Environmental Health Practitioners, Industrial Effluent Control, and the National Department of Water and Sanitation have been ongoing for four weeks. However, the source of the smell has not been found. Sample-testing has determined that the pollutant is a mixture of petrol and diesel, and investigations suspect illegal dumping into the stormwater network. Colourants have been added to selected points in the stormwater system to identify the inlet location of the polluting pipeline. The search has been narrowed to Lanham Street and Meeu Street.

• PIETERMARITZBURG – 03 JUN 2022 (02H35) The Minister of Health, Joe Phaahla, announced that today 03 June 2022, he is expected to launch the Global Vax campaign with KwaZulu-Natal’s Member of Executive Council (MEC) Nomagugu Simelane at Caluza Sports Centre in Pietermaritzburg. Phaahla stated that the Global Vax campaign is a commitment to vaccinating 70% of eligible South Africans.

• VRYHEID – 03 JUN 2022 (11H30) The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed an attempted assassination of DA Zululand District Councillor Swelakhe Shelembe. The party has released a statement condemning the alleged attempted assassination of Shelembe in Vryheid on Thursday evening, 02 June 2022. Preliminary investigations indicate that Shelembe had been transported in a private vehicle by a municipal assigned protector when unidentified armed suspects opened fire on the vehicle. No injuries were incurred during the incident. Further details regarding the incident’s circumstances are yet to be released as Police investigations are underway.

• PIETERSBURG/POLOKWANE – 03 JUN 2022 (09H30) The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo is expected to hold its 10th ANC Provincial Conference today 03 June 2022, until Sunday, 05 June 2022, at the Polokwane Ranch Resort.
• MOKOPANE/ POTGIETERSRUS – 03 JUN 2022 (18H00) The three accused in relation to the double murder case of African National Congress (ANC) councillors Vaaltyn Kekana and Ralph Kanyane appeared in the Mokopane Magistrate Court today, 03 June 2022. The case has been postponed to Friday, 10 June 2022, for the outcome of judicial review from the Polokwane High Court after the defence lodged an application for judicial review. The Mokopane Magistrate Court has granted an order for accused Jabu Mashamaite, to receive urgent medical attention while in police custody.

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 03 JUN 2022
• NELSPRUIT/MBOMBELA – 03 JUN 2022 (10H50) Protest reported outside the Nelspruit Magistrate Court. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are protesting to demand justice for Hillary Gardee. The court is expected to hear the bail application of Sipho Mkhatshwa, one of the accused of the sexual assault and murder of Hillary Gardee. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. • RUSTENBURG – 03 JUN 2022 (09H00) Premier Bushy Maape is expected to attend the Business Leaders Awards today, 03 June 2022, from 18H00 at the Sun City Superbowl in Moses Kotane Municipality. SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 03 JUN 2022
• KENHARDT – 03 JUN 2022 (09H00) Scatec ASA, a leading renewable energy solutions provider, has signed the power purchase agreements for the three Kenhardt projects in the Northern Cape under the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) with the South African Government. The project will provide 150 MegaWatts (MW) of dispatchable renewable energy based on a hybrid installation of 540 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity and 1.1 Gigawatt Hours (GWh) of battery storage. According to the agreements signed, financial close is to be achieved within 60 days from the signature date, and once financial close has been reached, Scatec will begin construction of the projects. Scatec will own 51% of the equity in the project, with H1 Holdings, the local Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) partner owning 49%. Scatec will also be the Engineering, Procurement and Construction provider and provide Operation and Maintenance, as well as Asset Management services to the power plants.

• CAPE TOWN – 03 JUN 2022 (15H00) The Hawks have arrested the leader of the Terrible West Siders gang, Moegamat Toufiek Brown. The arrest is in connection with the attempted murder of Cape Town lawyer William Booth and other gang-related crimes. Brown is charged with attempted murder with gang leaders, Nafiz Modack and Zane Killian. Brown allegedly acted as the middleman for the crime in 2020. Brown was arrested and appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on the same day. The case has been postponed to Monday, 06 June 2022, for legal representation. Modack and Killian are also charged with the murder of Anti-Gang Unit detective Charl Kinnear.
