SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 10 JUN 2022

  • EAST LONDON – 10 JUN 2022 (09H10) The African National Congress (ANC) in the Dr WB Rubusana Region has given the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) ten days to reverse the outcomes of the Eastern Cape Conference. The ANC members in the Dr WB Rubusana Region claim that processes leading up to the conference were marred by irregularities and disregarded adopted guidelines. The ANC members in the Dr WB Rubusana Region stated that the conference should be nullified.
  • JEFFREYS BAY – 10 JUN 2022 (14H50) The Kouga Municipality is expected to implement a water reduction schedule from Monday, 13 June 2022, as the Churchill dam has reached critical levels. Water supply to Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp and the Greater St Francis Area will be switched off from 10H00 until 16H00 every day of the week. The level of the Churchill Dam is below 10% and is the main water source for households and businesses in the area. The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality announced the decommissioning of the barge pump station at the Impofu dam on Thursday, 09 June 2022. The Municipality stated that the Impofu dam levels are so low that the pumps are at risk as the pumps are close to the bottom of the dam basin.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 10 JUN 2022

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 10 JUN 2022 (16H40) UPDATE Suspended African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Ace Magashule stated that he will be standing for the position of ANC President at the National Elective Conference in December 2022. Magashule stated that he will run for the ANC’s highest office despite facing charges of fraud, corruption, and money laundering. (11H50) The High Court had postponed the asbestos roofing case to Tuesday, 23 September 2022, for pre-trial proceedings. (06H00) The former Premier of the Free State, Ace Magashule, is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein High Court for the pre-trial hearing today, 10 June 2022. Magashule and ten others, as well as five companies, face more than 70 fraud, corruption, and money laundering charges in the asbestos roofing case. Supporters of Magashule are expected to protest outside the court during the hearing. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police will be dispatched to the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 10 JUN 2022

  • VLAKFONTEIN – 10 JUN 2022 (06H35) Protest reported on the Golden highway from Lenasia South to Zakariyya Park. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 10 JUN 2022 (14H10) Protest reported at the University of South Africa (UNISA). The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is protesting in solidarity with the dismissed National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) shop stewards. Demonstrators delivered a memorandum of demand to the University’s management. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are monitoring the protest.
  • SANDTON – 10 JUN 2022 (17H00) Eskom announced that its board will approve an annual borrowing plan for a transmission unit in the form of inter-company loans. Eskom stated that it will give the transmission unit that it is a separate entity, an R39.9-billion loan to ensure it can complete projects and be financially viable. The loan will be guaranteed by the transmission unit’s assets. The company will be known as the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA). The transmission unit, which will be the first business to be separated, will take control of employees, contracts and assets when all conditions are met, including obtaining licences from the national power regulator. Its purpose is to act as a national transmission network operator and a system market operator, allowing it to take in electricity from Eskom and privately run power plants as well as channelling imports from countries such as Mozambique. The company is expected to buy 218,000gigawatt-hours (GwH) of power annually, with 77% of that coming from Eskom power plants, 19% from independent generators and 4% from imports. In turn, it will export 5% of the 212,000GwH it expects to sell, and the rest will be sold within South Africa. The company is forecast to break even in about fiscal 2025 and make a net income of more than R5-billion in 2027.

  • DURBAN – 10 JUN 2022 (02H30) Unrest reported in the Central Business District (CBD) in Durban. Community members are reportedly looting various stores in the area. Police are discharging teargas and stun grenades in attempts to disperse groups. This follows after a national shutdown was announced for 10 June 2022 due to increased fuel prices. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
  • PROSPECTON – 10 JUN 2022 (05H45) UPDATE Police have dispersed the demonstrations. The road has been reopened for traffic. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are monitoring the area.   • BURGERSFORT – 10 JUN 2022 (12H35) Protest reported on the R37. The demonstrators are marching on the R37 due to their grievances regarding mining companies in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • MARBLEHALL – 10 JUN 2022 (14H45) Protest reported at the N11, R33 and R573 intersection in Marblehall. Demonstrators are marching on the R573 heading towards Katlego Sitrus. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • PHALABORWA – 10 JUN 2022 (18H00) Police have launched a search operation for suspects involved in an act of vigilantism on Thursday, 09 June 2022, in Majeje village, outside Phalaborwa. Residents killed four people that have been suspected to be involved in a business robbery on Thursday morning. Preliminary reports indicate three suspects entered the Easy Tuck Shop, pointed firearms at the owner and demanded money. One of the suspects then fatally shot the owner, and all three fled the scene. Community members chased the suspects and cornered and stoned them. Thereafter they burnt their bodies. The fourth victim, was also stoned and set alight after he produced a firearm and allegedly pointed it at the residents. Police are investigating cases of business robbery and five counts of murder.

  • KIMBERLEY – 10 JUN 2022 (08H40) The Member of the Executive (MEC) for the Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, Mase Manopole, is expected to host a farmers lekgotla today, 10 June 2022, at Boontjieskraal from 09H00. The lekgotla is expected to inform the department of the needs to be done to transform the sector with issues that include lack of funding, access to land and water and climate change. The Participants will be drawn from the land reform and food security beneficiaries, youth, women and farmers with disabilities, representatives of different commodities in each district and communal farmers.
