SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 04 JUL 2022
• GQERBERHA/PORT ELIZABETH – 04 JUL 2022 (03H50) The South African Breweries (SAB) announced an investment of R510 million into Nelson Mandela Bay as part of its Ibhayi expansion project. SAB stated that the investment forms part of a broader R4,5 billion injection they pledged at South Africa’s conference earlier this year. SAB stated that the project is expected to employ 14,000 unemployed young people by the end of 2022.
• ELUPHILISWENI – 04 JUL 2022 (07H25) Protest reported on the R61 between Magusheni and Mbizana. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• GQEBERHA/ PORT ELIZABETH – 04 JUL 2022 (13H40) Protest expected at UMhlobo Wenene FM on Thursday, 07 July 2022, by members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The demonstrators are expected to gather at Greenacres parking from 08H00 and march to UMhlobo Wenene FM. The demonstrators are demanding the reinstatement of Reverend Mzukisi Faleni. The station suspended Faleni on allegations of conflict of interest following his inclusion as a contributor to a programme at Zibonele FM. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the march. Police will be deployed to monitor the protest.
• EAST LONDON – 04 JUL 2022 (14H30) Eastern Cape liquor authorities and Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality officials are conducting inspections at 19 taverns in Scenery Park. This follows after 21 young people died in Enyobeni Tavern last weekend. The situation is volatile. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 04 JUL 2022
• PARYS – 04 JUL 2022 (04H45) Eskom announced that it will restore electricity supply to parts of Parys and Vredefort in the Free State once the Ngwathe Local municipalities settle their debt. This comes after the municipality’s network overloaded, resulting in the power utility’s equipment tripping and plunging thousands of households into the dark on Friday 01 July 2022. Eskom stated it issued a quotation for the municipality and during meetings held this week, Ngwathe agreed to pay for the repairs. However, the power utility stated that it is ready to start with restoration work. However, the power utility has not yet received the agreed payment.

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 04 JUL 2022
• JOHANNESBURG – 04 JUL 2022 (03H35) Protest expected by the Democratic Alliance (DA) Party on Tuesday 05 July 2022, at 11H15 at Member of Executive Council’s (MEC) Payanza Lesufi’s office in Gauteng. The protest by the DA is due to the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill that Lesufi wants to implement. The Bill aims to disempower the school governing bodies (SGBs) with regard to language and admission policies. The DA stated that they firmly believe the power should remain with the SGB, as they know and understand the needs of their communities.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 04 JUL 2022 (04H05) Protest expected by the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) at the Gauteng Department of Health. DENOSA Gauteng Chairperson Simphiwe Gada stated that the protest is due to the district’s non-payment of salaries and retrenchment of nurses over the past three months. Gada stated that the Gauteng Department of Health agreed to pay salaries today, 04 July 2022. Gada stated that if the Department fails to commit to the agreement made, the union will embark on a protest action in the province.
• SANDTON – 04 JUL 2022 (07H20) Looting reported on the N3 North before the Buccleuch Interchange. A truck transporting alcohol has overturned and lost its load on the roadway. Reports indicate that motorists and community members are looting the items. Motorists are advised to approach the area with caution. Emergency services have been dispatched.
• BOKSBURG – 04 JUL 2022 (10H50) UPDATE Demonstrations reported on the corner of Rondebult Road and the R544. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (06H25) Protest reported on Barry Marais Road/ M43 near Holomisa informal settlement. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with stones and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 04 JUL 2022 (12H35) The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, is expected to visit Singapore from Tuesday, 05 July 2022, until Wednesday, 06 July 2022, at the invitation of the Honourable Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, to discuss bilateral and multilateral cooperation issues of mutual interest. Minister Pandor is expected to will address and engage various government and business entities such as the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Singapore Institute of Technical Education (ITE). The discussions are expected to expand further cooperation and skills development exchanges between South Africa and Singapore.
• JOHANNESBURG – 04 JUL 2022 (13H15) Protest expected on Friday, 15 July 2022, at the Chief Albert Luthuli House. The demonstrators are expected to gather at Gandhi Square from 09H00 and march to Luthuli House. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand the removal of African National Congress (ANC) President Cyril Ramaphosa. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• JOHANNESBURG – 04 JUL 2022 (14H00) The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) O.R Tambo Branch is expected to hold a meeting with National Officials today, 04 July 2022, at the Chief Albert Luthuli House. The meeting will focus on the alleged victimisation of young people deployed in Government and the organisation. The ANCYL will, in particular, address the victimisation of Comrade Gaolatlhe Kgabo as a leader of society and a member of the ANC. Motorists are advised to be vigilant as the ANCYL may embark on protest action.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 04 JUL 2022 (16H20) Eskom has rejected the City of Tshwane’s offer to enter into a settlement plan for the R878-million it owes the power utility. The city has failed to pay Eskom R908-million on the deadline of 17 June 2022. The Metropolitan only managed payments of R10-million on 23 June and R20-million on 30 June 2022. As part of the efforts to recover the debt, Eskom has previously escalated the matter of the city’s erratic payments to the Tshwane Executive Mayor Randall Williams in January 2022 and again in June 2022. The city stated that this is due to the non-payment of services by residents. The city has committed to full payment by Thursday, 07 July 2022.
• SANDTON – 04 JUL 2022 (16H40) Eskom employees are expected to decide on a new wage by Tuesday, 05 July 2022, before the Central Bargaining Forum reconvenes. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) plan to convene a shop steward council on Tuesday to receive feedback from branches on the proposal. Workers are considering a wage offer comprising five items, including a 7% wage increase. Eskom has also offered to increase the housing allowance by R400, which could see workers receiving over R3,600 on the benefit.
• TARLTON – 04 JUL 2022 (17H25) UPDATE The situation is volatile at the N14 and R24 intersection in Tarlton. Community members are protesting due to a murder that has occurred in the area. • DURBAN – 04 JUL 2022 (13H00) The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Sipho Hlomuka, is expected to convene the Local Government Indaba on Tuesday, 05 July 2022, from 09H00 at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC). The Indaba is expected to provide a solid foundation for the fifth local government term. Various stakeholders that have a role to play in local Government, including State-Owned Entities and departments, will engage with Mayors, Municipal Managers, MPAC members and other stakeholders in local Government. Premier Sihle Zikalala and the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma are expected to attend the Indaba.

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 04 JUL 2022
• POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 04 JUL 2022 (09H00) The National Education, Health, and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) and other Health Unions have welcomed the resignation of the head of the Provincial Department of Health, Thokozani Mhlongo. Thokozani Mhlongo resigned from the department with immediate effect on Friday, 01 July 2022. NEHAWU stated that it has been calling for Mhlongo’s removal from 2021 due to incompetency and the collapse of the health department. The NEHAWU Provincial Secretary, Moses Maubane, stated remedial action should be taken against those implicated in the Public Protector’s report on allegations of maladministration and procurement irregularities in awarding of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) tenders.
• MUSINA – 04 JUL 2022 (14H45) Members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) have been instructed to cease cooperating with AfriForum’s border security structures in Musina, Limpopo. The Defence Force, aligned with the Department, stated that it would be illegal for any civil organisation or Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), including businesses, to conduct patrols at any borders of South Africa. Members of AfriForum in Musina are patrolling agricultural holdings which are neighbouring the borderline. However, AfriForum is not patrolling the general border line outside agricultural holdings. This follows after AfriForum’s patrolling officers at the border with Zimbabwe had a working relationship with law enforcement and military personnel on the ground part of the AfriForum’s Border Watch Initiative launched in June 2022.

• MAHUSHU – 04 JUL 2022 (07H00) The Masoyi South African Police Service (SAPS) has advised motorists to remain vigilant when travelling on the R538 and Numbi Road due to ongoing protests. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (06H20) Protest reported on the R544 in the vicinity of Total Energies Benicon towards Duvha Power Station. • SIYABUSWA – 04 JUL 2022 (15H25) The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has condemned the murder of the Chairperson of the KwaMhlanga Taxi association, Rooi Mahlangu. This follows after three unknown suspects shot and killed Mahlangu on Saturday, 02 July 2022, at Siyabuswa B before fleeing the scene on foot. Police have launched a search operation for the suspects. No arrests have been made.

• WOLMARANSSTAD – 04 JUL 2022 (08H30) The Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (ALRRD), as well as the Committee on Employment and Labour, has given Bona Bona Game Farm 14 days to correct the non-compliance and report to the Department of Employment and Labour. This follows after employees at Bona Bona Game Farm-raised complaints of being underpaid and not being compensated for overtime work during the Portfolio Committee’s oversight visit from Friday, 01 July 2022, until Sunday, 03 July 2022.
