SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 08 JUL 2022
• MTHATHA – 08 JUL 2022 (08H30) The Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is expected to visit King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality today, 08 July 2022, to conduct an oversight visit to an initiation school. This follows eight initiates that died during the initiation season on 17 June 202. The committee is expected to be provided with additional information on the cause of the deaths.

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 08 JUL 2022
• BLOEMFONTEIN – 08 JUL 2022 (08H00) The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Police, Road and Transport, William Bulwane, is expected to conduct an oversight visit at the Odendaalsrus Police Station today, 08 July 2022, from 11H00. The visit follows after the Department of Labour closed the Odendaalsrus police station due to negligence.
• DEALESVILLE – 08 JUL 2022 (16H40) Police launched an investigation into the murder of two people along the R64 between Dealesville and Boshoff on Thursday, 07 July 2022. The Police received information of a shooting incident between 15H00 and 16H00 on Thursday. On arrival, the Police found a vehicle parked on the side of the road. Two people were found dead and were later identified as the owners of Kgakgamatso Mortuary. No one has been arrested, and the motive of the killing is unknown at this stage.

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 08 JUL 2022
• BOKSBURG – 08 JUL 2022 (07H00) Protest reported on Wit Deep Road. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Previous demonstrations have been related to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• SOWETO – 08 JUL 2022 (10H35) Cash in transit (CIT) robbery reported at Bara Mall. Reports indicate that unidentified suspects have robbed an armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries have been reported. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• JOHANNESBURG – 08 JUL 2022 (13H00) Protest expected by the Democratic Nursing Organisation South Africa (DENOSA) on Wednesday, 20 July 2022. The demonstrators are expected to gather outside the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) House from 09H00. The demonstrators are expected to march to the Office of the Premier, Gauteng Treasury and the Gauteng Department of Health to protest against the unfair treatment of nurses. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 08 JUL 2022 (15H10) Members of Equal Education (EE) and learners held a protest at the Department of Basic Education office in Pretoria today, 08 July 2022. The demonstrators objected to proposed amendments to the minimum standards for public school infrastructure. Under the new draft amendments, deadlines have been removed for when Government must eradicate pit latrines and provide classrooms and basic services such as water and electricity. The EE is also demanding that the Department immediately eradicate pit toilets at all schools. The demonstrators deliver a memorandum of demand to the Department Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 08 JUL 2022 (15H45) The Minister of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) announced that the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will continue to be on standby to protect all national key points and economic corridors of the country from any civil unrest. This follows after the July 2021’s violence. Public Order Police members and frontline officers are undergoing refresher training courses in crowd control management. An additional 4,000 Public Order Police are being trained. Extra funds have been allocated for the modernisation of the unit, including the procurement of armoured vehicles and aircraft. Further, funding has been set aside for the procurement of protective gear for Public Order Police members. The State Security Agency (SSA) is being strengthened by the appointment of new members, including a full-time Director-General, and is prioritising the sharing of information between security entities. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI) are continuing to investigate the crimes committed by those who were arrested during the July 2021 unrest.

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 08 JUL 2022
• DURBAN – 08 JUL 2022 (01H30) The African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) announced that their general meeting is expected to be held on 10 July 2022 at the Olive Convention Centre. The ANC stated that they are expected to elect delegates and nominate leadership for the province during the meeting.
• DURBAN – 08 JUL 2022 (01H40) The African National Congress (ANC) announced their ninth KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) conference is expected to be held on 20 July 2022 at the Olive Convention Centre. The ANC stated that during the conference, the party will elect the Chairman for the ANC in the KZN province. This meeting follows after several branches in the province conducted general meetings to select their delegates for the conference and endorse their preferred top five leaders and additional members.
• MAWOZINI – 08 JUL 2022 (07H10) Protest reported on the R33 in the vicinity of Bhambatha Secondary School. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Demonstrations are related to service delivery. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• PINETOWN – 08 JUL 2022 (07H20) Protest reported on Wiltshire Road in Mariann Industrial Park. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• LADYSMITH – 08 JUL 2022 (09H10) Protest reported on Helpmekaar Road in the vicinity of Dunlop. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery and the failure of the Mayor to address the community. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 08 JUL 2022
• GIYANI – 08 JUL 2022 (11H45) Protest reported on Giyani Main Road in the vicinity of Giyani Magistrate Court. The Economic Freedom Fighters are marching to the Mopani District Municipality offices to hand over a memorandum of demands. The EFF members are protesting over the lack of water and sanitation in Giyani. The demonstrators have obstructed the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• MOKOPANE/ POTGIETERSRUS – 08 JUL 2022 (17H20) The Mokopane Magistrates Court postponed the bail hearing of Mogalakwena municipality official Jabu Mashamaite and co-accused James Chuma to Monday, 11 July 2022. Mashamaite and co-accused appeared alongside two more suspects, Sam Mokonyane and Nkholo Monyadi, who are not applying for bail. The accused were arrested in connection with the 2019 murder of African National Congress (ANC) Councillors, Vaaltyn Kekana and Ralph Kanyane. The Mokopane Task Team Chairperson Matsobane Masenya stated that the bail hearing is expected to be finalised by Monday.

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 08 JUL 2022
• MBOMBELA/ NELSPRUIT – 08 JUL 2022 (06H00) Premier Refilwe Mtshweni Tsipane is expected to lead a delegation of the Members of the Executive Council (MECs) and economic experts in discussion with a delegation of the United States of America’s (USA) investors today, 08 July 2022, from 16H00. The discussion is expected to be held to promote investment opportunities in the province. Premier Tsipane is expected to outline the opportunities for trade by foreign investors in the following sectors, agro-processing, renewable energy, mining, forestry, infrastructure and tourism. The initiative is geared toward a commitment of the Provincial Government to increase foreign direct investment to boost the economy.
• NGODWANA – 08 JUL 2022 (06H20) Motorists travelling on the N4 in the vicinity of SAPPI Ngodwana are advised to be cautious due to a heavy motor vehicle that has barricaded the road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are monitoring the situation.
• BARBERTON – 08 JUL 2022 (09H00) Protest reported outside the Umjindi Municipality offices. Employees are protesting due to labour-related disputes. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with rocks and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• GRASKOP – 08 JUL 2022 (10H50) UPDATE Road closure reported on the R533 in the vicinity of Kowyn Pass due to ongoing protest. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (10H10) Protest reported in Graskop. The demonstrators have barricaded routes into Graskop. Possible routes that may be affected include the R533 and the R532. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 08 JUL 2022
• RUSTENBURG – 08 JUL 2022 (09H45) Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula is expected to undertake an Imbizo follow-up and oversight visit on the developments of the Rustenburg Integrated Public Transport Network Corridor (IPTN) today, 08 July 2022, from 10H00 at the Rustenburg Civic Centre. The National Department of Transport intercepted the IPTN corridor development in 2011, and the objective of the IPTN project is to improve access to public transport in Rustenburg. However, the project has been stalled due to allegations of corruption.
• WOLMARANSSTAD – 08 JUL 2022 (12H20) UPDATE Police have dispersed demonstrations on the N12. The N12 has been reopened for traffic flow. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are monitoring the area. (07H40) Protest reported on the N12 towards the R34 turnoff to Bloemhof. Residents from Extension (EXT) 10 are protesting due to service delivery related to water outages. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 08 JUL 2022
• RICHMOND – 08 JUL 2022 (08H40) The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is expected to meet with the community of Richmond and surrounding areas in the province on Tuesday, 12 July 2022, as part of engagements with the public on the published Unconventional Gas Regulations. The DWS has met with internal and external stakeholders on the published Unconventional Gas Regulations, which were developed in line with Section 38 of the National Water Act of 1998. The regulations prescribe requirements and procedures when using water for unconventional gas activities.
• SPRINGBOK – 08 JUL 2022 (14H30) Police have arrested 14 suspected illegal miners and 95 undocumented persons operating at a mine in Namaqua area, including Klenzie and Nuttabooi. The arrests were made during a two-day operation focusing on illegal mining activities. Mining equipment, including generators, was confiscated. The value of the confiscated equipment is estimated at R3.5-million. Provincial Police Spokesperson Mashay Gameldien stated that illegal substances such as narcotics and illegal firearms were also found during the raid. Approximately 300 illegal miners were found digging at the identified site where the operation was executed. The suspects are expected to appear in the Springbok Magistrate’s Court.

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 08 JUL 2022
• HERMANUS – 08 JUL 2022 (12H25) UPDATE Demonstrations reported outside the Hermanus municipal offices. The demonstrators have blockaded the Municipal gates. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are on the scene. (08H30) Demonstrators are expected to gather at the Zwelihle sports fields from 10H00 and march to the Mayoral offices. The following roads will be affected by the march, Main Road, the R43 and routes in the industrial area. The demonstrators are expected to disperse from 16H00. (06H05) Protest expected at the Overstrand Municipality office on Friday, 08 July 2022, by the Land Party. The demonstrators will hand over a memorandum to the Overstrand Executive Mayor regarding service delivery, as it relates to access to water, electricity and land availability. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police will be deployed to monitor the protest.
• CAPE TOWN – 08 JUL 2022 (13H10) Protest reported on School Street and Church Street. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• CAPE TOWN – 08 JUL 2022 (13H20) Protest reported on Kommetjie Road/M65 in the vicinity of Sasol filling station. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstrators have also set a container alight. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• CAPE TOWN – 08 JUL 2022 (13H45) The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) is expected to hold a National Congress from 25 July until 29 July 2022 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The NUMSA National Congress is the highest decision-making body. It has the power to make policy for the union, to decide on resolutions submitted to the congress by the regions and the Central Committee, and the power to amend the constitution. It also has the duty of electing new national leadership for the union.
• CAPE TOWN – 08 JUL 2022 (14H45) The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) arrested undocumented immigrants in Cape Town this morning, 08 July 2022. This is part of an operation against illegal foreign nationals at trucking companies. Two undocumented yard workers were arrested at Belogix, while another one was arrested at Milltrans. This follows after South African truck drivers have raised concerns about the high numbers of undocumented foreigners employed in the trucking industry. The DHA, in response, have raided trucking companies in search of illegal immigrants.
• CAPE TOWN – 08 JUL 2022 (16H15) Takealot employees embarked on a strike action today, 08 July 2022, at the Montague Gardens warehouse of the online retailer. Employees are demanding permanent positions and the dismissal of a manager accused of racism. The employees were advised to return to work by 11H15. Otherwise, the no work, no pay principle would apply. The employees were told to elect representatives to meet with management while the rest returned to work. The striking employees would also be required to sign a confirmation form stating that they were going to perform their normal duties. However, the employees refused. Dunoon activist Lethu Tyhalithi led the strike.
