SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 21 JUL 2022
• GQEBERHA/ PORT ELIZABETH – 21 JUL 2022 (09H15) UPDATE Police have cordoned off Addo Road in a bid to quell the ongoing protest action. Police spokesperson Col Priscilla Naidu has stated that the protest has been ongoing since Wednesday night, 20 July 2022. Naidu stated that the closure prevents further losses or damage after protesters torched several trucks. Trucks are being diverted at Monument Crossing and advised to use an alternative route. (08H10) Demonstrations reported on the R334 between Uitenhage to Motherwell. The demonstrators have blockaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. (06H30) Road closure reported on the R335 in the vicinity of Motherwell. Community members are protesting and have blockaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Reports indicate that the demonstrators set a truck alight on Wednesday evening, 20 July 2022, during the ongoing protest. Previous demonstrations have been related to poor service delivery. Police will be deployed to the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 21 JUL 2022
• BLOEMFONTEIN – 21 JUL 2022 (16H30) The Free State High Court has released a former senior official in the Gauteng Government, Margaret-Ann Diedricks, on bail today, 21 July 2022. This follows after the Hawks arrested Diedricks in Alberton on Wednesday, 20 July 2022, for her involvement with the R255 million Free State asbestos tender corruption case. Diedricks is accused of appointing service providers in the tender by using a procurement loophole to transfer services from a company contracted by her department to the Free State. Diedricks allegedly received more than R7 million from the service provider. Several other government officials, including former Free State premier Ace Magashule, businessman Edwin Sodi, and Free State human settlements head of department Nthimotse Mokhesi have been charged with fraud, corruption, theft and money laundering, among other charges, in the case. The case has been postponed to 23 September 2022, where Diedricks will be joined by the 12 co-accused.

• TEMBISA – 21 JUL 2022 (07H00) UPDATE Authorities have confirmed that roads in the vicinity of Tembisa have re-opened following a shutdown on 20 July 2022. Motorists have been advised to drive with caution due to the debris obstructing the roads. Clean-up operations will be underway. (20H00) Protest reported in Tembisa. Roads that are affected include Andrew Mapheto Drive, Rev RTJ Namane, Sam Molele, DM Marokane, and Brian Mazibuko roads between Sangweni and Hospital view. The demonstrators are barricading the roads with burning tyres and debris. Community members are protesting due to the high-cost rates. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 21 JUL 2022 (07H15) Protest expected at the Pretoria Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Campus in Sunnyside on Friday, 22 July 2022, from 10H00. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has called on workers to mobilize in the #FightBack campaign against the high cost of living, such as electricity rates. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police will be deployed to the scene.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 21 JUL 2022 (10H30) Protest reported outside the Department of International Relations and Cooperation in Pretoria. Members of various political groups are protesting for democratic reform and Police brutality in the Kingdom of eSwatini. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. Police are on the scene.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 21 JUL 2022 (14H00) UPDATE The Extra-Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has been postponed until further notice. This follows after the Kingdom of eSwatini was unable to participate. (06H00) President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his capacity as the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, is expected to host an Extra-Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ Troika Plus the Kingdom of eSwatini in Pretoria today, 21 July 2022. The Republic of South Africa assumed the rotational Chairship of the SADC Organ from August 2021 until August 2022. Other members are Botswana and Namibia. The Extra-Ordinary Summit will be preceded by meetings of Senior Officials on 16 July and 17 July 2022 and the Ministerial Committee of the Organ on 19 July 2022.
• SEBOKENG – 21 JUL 2022 (14H15) Eskom announced that repair work is in progress at the Sebokeng substation. The electricity supply is expected to be restored within 42 hours. This follows after a transformer burned on Monday night, 18 July 2022. Areas that are affected include Golden Gardens, Sebokeng Zones 10, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 21 and 24 and Polokong.
• SANDTON – 21 JUL 2022 (14H25) Eskom has announced the revised loadshedding schedule for the weekend. Stage 1 loadshedding will be implemented from 16H00 until 00H00 on Saturday, 23 July, and Sunday, 24 July 2022.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 21 JUL 2022 (15H30) The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Governor, Lesetja Kganyago, is addressing the nation regarding the interest rate. The benchmark repo rate has been raised by 75 basis points to 5.50% per year. The Monetary Policy Committee’s (MPC) interest rate-raising cycle started in November 2021, after it saw a period of lowering the rate during the COVID-19 pandemic. Earlier in May 2022, the MPC increased the repurchase rate by 50 basis points to 4.75% per year. The latest hike indicates that the prime lending rate in South Africa will increase to 9%.
• CENTURION – 21 JUL 2022 (17H00) Targeted murder reported on Emerald Street in Laudium. One person has been fatally shot. The suspects were driving a white Toyota Corolla. Police are on the scene. This is the third person killed in the Ward in the last 24 hours. The other two victims were killed in Itireleng on Wednesday, 20 July 2022, and this morning, 21 July 2022. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 21 JUL 2022
• DURBAN – 21 JUL 2022 (01H10) Fire reported at Quarry road informal settlement. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. Emergency services are expected to be deployed to the area. The public is advised to avoid the area. Relevant updates will be issued as the situation progresses.
• CATO RIDGE – 21 JUL 2022 (08H40) Protest reported in the Kwa Ximba area near Cato Ridge. Community members have blocked several roads within their area with burning tyres and debris. Previous demonstrations have been related to poor service delivery. Motorists have been advised to remain vigilant, particularly on the R103, in Cato Ridge. Police are aware of the situation.
• DURBAN – 21 JUL 2022 (09H00) Protest reported at the Transnet Port Terminals in Durban. Employees from Transnet have delivered a memorandum of their grievances to the management. This follows after the employees held a demonstration at the terminals. Demonstrators have dispersed, and the situation has returned to normalcy. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant.
• PIETERMARITZBURG – 21 JUL 2022 (11H15) UPDATE Judge Poyo Dlwathi has been sentenced to five life sentences for the charges against him. The Sobantu community has further welcomed the decision and is continuing to protest. (11H00) Protest reported outside the Pietermaritzburg High Court. The Sobantu community is protesting outside the High Court in Pietermaritzburg over the appearance of Njabulo Ndlovu, an alleged murderer, where Judge Poyo Dlwathi is expected to issue the verdict on the case of Njabulo Ndlovu, who pleaded guilty to all the charges against him, including three murders and two sexual abuse cases. • BEREA – 21 JUL 2022 (12H50) UPDATE Motorists are advised to drive with caution due to an ongoing crime scene in Overport City, along Peter Mokaba Ridge Street. An unconfirmed number of suspects have been apprehended after attempting to rob a G4S armoured vehicle (AV). Police are on the scene. (12H10) Attempted cash in transit (CIT) robbery at the Atrium Centre in Overport City, Durban. Unidentified suspects attempted to rob a cash van. Motorists are advised to drive with caution. Relevant authorities are on the scene and are assessing the situation.
• MAWOZINI – 21 JUL 2022 (13H00) UPDATE Demonstrations reported on the R33 Road between Dundee and the uMsinga Local Municipality. Community members are protesting over water challenges in their area. The situation remains volatile. (06H45) Protest reported on the R33 Dundee Road in the Mawozini area, Msinga ward 12. Community members are protesting due to water supply challenges. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with debris and burning tyres. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. Police have been deployed to the scene.
• DURBAN – 21 JUL 2022 (13H50) Fire reported on Ramachand Road, Effingham Road and the surrounding area of Effingham. Several informal houses are alight. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. Emergency services are on the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
• DURBAN – 21 JUL 2022 (15H45) Fire reported at the Bosch Service Building on Florence Nzama Road in the South Beach area. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.

• LOUIS TRICHARDT – 21 JUL 2022 (09H00) Protest reported on the R522 in the vicinity of Tshikota township near Louis Trichardt. Community members are blocking all entrances and exits to Tshikota. Community members from Tshikota will march to the Louis Trichardt Court. Motorists are advised to avoid Vivo road from Tshikota to the Central area. Police are on the scene.
• POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 21 JUL 2022 (17H44) The Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has dismissed the application to strike off the roll the Mogalakwena Municipality corruption and money laundering case. This follows after the defence lawyers made an application claiming that they did not receive the contents of the dockets, citing unreasonable delay caused by the state. The National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi stated that 29 people, including companies, are facing more than 100 charges of fraud and corruption. The accused include the former Mayor of Mogalakwena Municipality Andrina Matsemela, African National Congress (ANC) member of the Provincial Legislature Tolly Mashamaite and Deputy Director of Technical Support Jabu Mashamaite. The case has been postponed to 07 October 2022 for a pre-trial conference.

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 21 JUL 2022
• ACORNHOEK – 21 JUL 2022 (09H30) Educators at the Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in Bushbuckridge have vowed to continue to protest in demand for their stipends and allowances. This follows after a demonstration on Wednesday, 20 July 2022. The educators have not received their monthly payments for a period of four months from the Mpumalanga Department of Education. The educators have also vowed not to return to work until the department responds to their grievances.
• ACORNHOEK – 21 JUL 2022 (12H25) UPDATE Road closure reported on the R40 Road near AcornHoek Mall. The protest is related to a situation related to a Mpumalanga Division High Court legal matter between a business person, Nelson Tivane, who constructed a petrol filling station in the Tsakani residential area. However, the management of the Acornhoek Mall has accused Tivane of irregularly obtaining the licence to operate a filling station. The community vowed to loot the mall if the management refused to withdraw the interdict at the High court Tivane. Police are on the scene. (11H15) Protest reported on the R40 Road outside Cashbuild near Acornhoek Mall. Demonstrators have blocked the road and diverted traffic. Police are on the scene. • MOREMELA – 21 JUL 2022 (13H39) Protest reported on the R532 near Bourke’s Luck Potholes heading towards Blyde. The demonstrators are barricading the road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area. Police have been dispatched to the scene.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 21 JUL 2022
• KLERKSDORP – 21 JUL 2022 (08H20) Clashes reported between the community in Jouberton and the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the Jouberton Police Station. The community has engaged in a confrontation with the law enforcement officials. This follows after their gang leader was killed by a suspected illegal miners group. Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant.
• BRITS – 21 JUL 2022 (09H00) Protest reported on Marthinus Ras Street in the industrial Area in Brits. Demonstrators have blocked the entrance to a company, Solid Doors. Reports indicate that the demonstrations have been ongoing since 19 July 2022. Members of the public are advised to remain vigilant. PPS Monitoring and Reaction security is on scene and monitoring the situation.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 21 JUL 2022
• KIMBERLEY – 21 JUL 2022 (06H10) The Sol Plaatje Municipality has announced a planned water interruption in Kimberly and surrounding areas for today, 21 July 2022, from 06H00 until 18H00. The interruption will allow Eskom to conduct maintenance work at the Riverton Substation. The KCC Waterworks, Riverton resort and Langleg resort will be affected by the maintenance work. The Municipality stated that it would provide updates on the progress.
• KIMBERLEY – 21 JUL 2022 (15H20) Parents have called for the army to be deployed to Greenpoint High School after a clash between rival gangs on Wednesday, 20 July 2022. One learner has been stabbed by another learner. After the incident, clashes between learners ensued. The injured learner escaped and received medical attention. Police attempted to disperse the clashes. Northern Cape Department of Education Spokesperson Sydney Stander stated that they are aware of the challenges at the school and are working with different stakeholders to resolve the matter.

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 21 JUL 2022
• CAPE TOWN – 21 JUL 2022 (08H00) Protest expected in the City Centre of Cape Town on Thursday, 04 August 2022. Members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Western Cape have called on workers to mobilize in the #FightBack campaign against the high cost of living, such as electricity rates and violence in Cape Town. Demonstrators will be expected to gather on Hanover Street in Cape Town City Centre at 08H00 and proceed to the Western Cape Provincial Legislature Office and Civic Centre City of Cape Town.
