SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 08 AUG 2022

  • GQEBERHA/PORT ELIZABETH – 08 AUG 2022 (06H55) Flooding reported in several areas of Port Elizabeth. Reports indicate that the following areas are closed due to flooding, which includes Standford Road, Lindsay Road, Cape and 3rd Avenue, Disa Avenue, Kempston Road and Swartkops Street. Motorists are advised to be vigilant when passing through the area.
  • EAST LONDON – 08 AUG 2022 (06H45) Motorists are advised to be vigilant when travelling in East London due to adverse weather conditions. Reports indicate that several trees, signs and electricity cables are blocking roads in East London. Several accidents have also been recorded since early morning in the area. Disaster management teams are currently busy monitoring the situation. Public members are advised to remain indoors.

The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes for the duration of the protest. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 08 AUG 2022

  • WELKOM – 08 AUG 2022 (01H00) The South African Police Services (SAPS) has announced that the Welkom 10111 Command Centre’s system is out of order. Free State SAPS spokesperson Stephen Thakeng noted that the system is out of order due to technical issues. Residents have been advised to contact the Police Colonel Nosizi Mangani for emergencies and complaints. Additional members to contact include Lieutenant Colonel Mangani, Warrant Officer Makoko, Sergeant Holtzhauzen and Constable Mathakhoe. The public is advised that relevant updates will be issued as the situation progresses.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 08 AUG 2022

  • SANDTON – 08 AUG 2022 (02H40) Eskom has announced the suspension of loadshedding from Sunday, 07 August 2022. The suspension has followed due to the increase in generation capacity reserves, in addition to the decreased demand between Friday, 05 August 2022 and Sunday, 07 August 2022. Eskom currently has 4,116 MegaWatts (MW) on planned maintenance, and 12,437MW of power is unavailable due to breakdowns. The public is advised that loadshedding may be implemented on short notice as the generation supply systems are still vulnerable.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 08 AUG 2022 (05H25) The United States (US) Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, is expected to meet with the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor today, 08 August 2022. Blinken stated that the visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss global issues faced by the two countries.
  • SANDTON – 08 AUG 2022 (07H35) UPDATE Reports indicate that the e-hailing drivers have suspended their planned protest action for today. The E-Hailing Driver-partner Community stated they are discussing their complaints with employers. Therefore, they have suspended their planned protest action. (06H15) Stay-away demonstration expected by E-Hailing operators in Gauteng today, 08 August 2022. E-hailing drivers will be protesting against the company’s unfair treatment of drivers, including the trip radar which has been imposed on Uber drivers to accept risky and unprofitable trips. The decision follows a consultative meeting between several representatives of e-hailing drivers in Gauteng on 12 July 2022 at the Marlboro Community Hall. The Provincial Council, with the Regional Task Team leaders of five Regions, has declared to all operators to stay offline to boycott Uber, Bolt and Indriver on 08 August 2022 until further notice. Members of the public are advised to remain cautious of the planned demonstration.
  • RANDFONTEIN – 08 AUG 2022 (06H30) UPDATE Reports indicate that the demonstrators have gathering at the specified point and started to barricade the roads with rocks, burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes as demonstrators also started throwing rocks at vehicles. (05H40) Reports indicate that the planned protest will affect the following areas, including Mahlakeng, Toekomsrus, Zenzele and Bekkersdal. (02H30) Protest expected by Randfontein residents on 08 August 2022. The members are set to protest for the removal of Zama Zamas in the area. Residents will gather at the Mohlakeng taxi rank at 05H00. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes as previous demonstrations had been volatile. The South African Police Services (SAPS) are expected to deploy officers to monitor the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 08 AUG 2022

  • ESTCOURT – 07 AUG 2022 (20H00) Protest reported on the R103 by community members in the area. The reason for the protest is unknown at this stage. However, previous demonstrations have been related to poor service delivery. Reports indicate that the members have barricaded the roads with debris. The South African Police Services (SAPS) have been notified of the incident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes, including the N3 to the Wembezi offramp.
  • DURBAN – 07 AUG 2022 (22H10) Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has commenced operations for all Toyota models at its Prospecton plant, Durban. This follows after the plant had suspended operations due to the flooding that occurred on 12 April 2022. TSAM President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Andrew Kirby confirmed the announcement at the opening of an R365 million expansion project to Toyota’s parts and distribution warehouse, Boksburg. Toyota will commence with the production of the Corolla Quest in September 2022. Additionally, Toyota is set to increase operations over an eight-week period.
  • MABHANOYINI – 08 AUG 2022 (05H20) Protest reported on the R103 from Mabhanoyini towards Estcourt. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the demonstration remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes for the duration of the demonstration. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area.
  • DURBAN – 08 AUG 2022 (07H20) The African National Congress (ANC) announced that the Provincial Executive Committee in KwaZulu Natal (KZN) is expected to announce the replacement for Sihle Zikalala as premier today, 08 August 2022. The ANC stated that Nomusa Dube-Ncube, Mbali Fraser and Amanda Bani had been nominated as replacements for the position.
  • BHAMBANANA – 08 AUG 2022 (08H15) UPDATE Reports indicate that the demonstrators have suspended their protest action, and the road has now been opened for normal traffic flow. (05H35) Protest reported on the P522 road between Jozini eMachibini and Bhambanana. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrators were related to service delivery in the area. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the protest. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 08 AUG 2022

  • MALAMULELE – 08 AUG 2022 (01H30) The South African Police Services (SAPS) in Limpopo have established a search operation in the vicinity of Gumbani. This follows after a killing incident that occurred on Sunday, 07 August 2022. During the incident, suspects injured a witness and fatally injured another. Reports indicate that the suspects attacked the civilian following an altercation at a local drinking establishment. Additionally, the witness has identified a suspect. The Police have requested the public to provide any information that will lead to the suspect’s apprehension.
  • BOCHUM – 08 AUG 2022 (06H10) The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Nkakareng Rakgoale, is expected to launch the Thiba Mekoti Ditseleng Project today, 08 August 2022, at 08H00 at Road D1486. Rakgoale stated that the project aims to improve the roads in the municipality by fixing all potholes in the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 08 AUG 2022

  • HAZYVIEW – 08 AUG 2022 (08H55) Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Mohita Latchminarian, is expected to launch Operation Vala Zonke today, 08 August 2022, at 09H00 on the R536 Road in Hazyview. Latchminarian stated that the project aims to improve the roads in the municipality by fixing all potholes in the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 08 AUG 2022

  • KOSTER – 08 AUG 2022 (07H15) Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Oageng Gaoage Molapisi, is expected to launch Operation Kwala Kaofela today, 08 August 2022, at 09H00 on the R52 Koster-Lichtenburg Road. Molapisi stated that the project aims to improve the roads in the municipality by fixing all potholes in the area.
  • MOKGOLA – 08 AUG 2022 (09H15) Protest reported on R49 in the vicinity of Mokgola village. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the area with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes for the duration of the protest. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 08 AUG 2022

  • PORT NOLLOTH – 08 AUG 2022 (08H00) Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) announced its decision to seek a private sector investment to construct a new deepwater port in Boegoebaai. TNPA stated that the project’s first phase is to construct a rail link of 550 kilometers (KM), estimated at R13,8 billion. TNPA stated that the port is expected to export green hydrogen and other minerals after completion.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 08 AUG 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 07 AUG 2022 (22H15) Shooting reported in the vicinity of Vangate mall near Nantas, Bridgetown. Reports indicate that an unknown number of suspects have fired sporadically at a civilian. It is expected that the civilian died during the incident. The South African Police Services (SAPS) have been deployed to the area to investigate the scene. The public is advised to avoid the area.
  • CAPE TOWN – 07 AUG 2022 (22H50) Motorists are advised to be vigilant while travelling along the Philippi Varkensvlei road, Cape Town. This follows after reports of stone-throwing along the road. The South African Police Services (SAPS) are expected to deploy officers to patrol the area.
  • KNYSNA – 08 AUG 2022 (05H10) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are expected to hold a Women’s Day rally at the Khayalethu Community Hall in Knysna tomorrow, 09 August, from 12H00. The EEF stated that the rally aims to motivate women to take a stand against gender-based violence (GBV).
  • WESTERN CAPE – 08 AUG 2022 (08H40) The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) announced that 200 personnel has been put on 24-hour standby notice. SANDF stated that the notice is due to possible deployment into crime hotspots and areas of expected protests. SANDF stated that they are only waiting for President Cyril Ramaphosa to present the deployment to Parliament’s approval and his signature before they can be deployed.
