SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 04 AUG 2022

  • EAST LONDON – 04 AUG 2022 (07H35) The Buffalo City Municipality announced that several road closures will be implemented today in front of the International Convention Centre in East London. The Municipality stated that the road closures are due to the State of the City Address (SOCA), which the Executive Mayor Councillor Xola Pakati will present. The Municipality further noted that the Esplanade road between Inverleigh Terrace Road and Clifford Street will be closed for the duration of the meeting.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 04 AUG 2022

  • HARRISMITH – 03 AUG 2022 (20H00) The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Shadow Energy Minister Kevin Mileham has announced that the party’s energy action plan for the MAP16 Civic Movement (MAP16) in the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality is expected to prioritise the eradication of illegal electricity connections in the municipal district. The DA has indicated that discussions are underway to enter into an agreement to propose support for MAP16’s energy plans. This follows after the DA Ward Councillor in the municipality, Moshe Lefuma, recently reiterated the DA’s support to allow Eskom to oversee the energy distribution, despite disagreeing with the implementation plan due to procedural disputes. The Municipal Administration is currently engaged in a process to replace bridged electricity meter boxes with sealed containers to address the illegal connections.

The Police are expected to deploy officers to the area.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 03 AUG 2022 (20H30) Protest expected in Zone 16 of Johannesburg by members of the African National Congress (ANC) on 13 August 2022. The members will gather from 11H00 at the OR Tambo Community Centre and march to the Bramley Police Station. The members will be protesting against gender-based violence (GBV), mass killings and other crimes. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the duration of the protest. ANC members are expected to gather at the Roodepoort City Hall at 10H00 to march to the Roodepoort Police Station. The march aims to protest against the recent increased crime rate in the country, gender-based violence (GBV) and killings.   • EKURHULENI – 03 AUG 2022 (22H00) The Presidency has announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver a keynote address during the closing ceremony of the Presidential Social Sector Summit 2022 on Friday, 05 August 2022. The Summit is set to be held at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Ekurhuleni between Thursday, 04 August 2022, and Friday, 05 August 2022, under the theme of Fostering Social Cohesion to enable Socio-Economic Participation in Communities. The Summit is expected to consider dialogue reports from the nine provinces on challenges raised regarding several matters, including funding, regulatory issues, poverty, inequality, employment, and strengthening democratic participation. An estimated 600 delegates from various Civil Society Organisations (CSO) from across South Africa are expected to attend the Summit. The closing session is set to occur from 09H00 on Friday, 05 August 2022.
  • BENONI – 03 AUG 2022 (21H55) Fire reported at the Barcelona Primary School in Etwatwa, Ekhuruleni. Reports indicate that the school building is currently on fire due to a suspected arson incident. Some community members have reportedly set the building on fire due to a lack of development in the area. The suspects have since fled the scene and currently remain at large. Emergency services are on the scene, and efforts are underway to contain the fire.
  • TEMBISA – 03 AUG 2022 (22H40) UPDATE Madiba Drive has been closed to traffic due to ongoing protest action in Tembisa. Motorists are also advised to avoid Andrew Maphetho Drive near the Tembisa High School and Sam Molele Drive between Link Road and Brian Mazibuko Drive near the Engen filling station. Demonstrators are barricading roads with burning tyres and debris. (19H15) The demonstrators are barricading Reverend RJT Namane Drive near Swazi Inn, and on Brian Mazibuko Drive in Emoyeni. The demonstrators are throwing stones at Police vehicles. (19H05) Protest reported in Tembisa. The demonstrators are barricading routes with burning tyres and debris. Community members are protesting due to poor service delivery and the increase in tariffs. The situation is volatile. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are on the scene.
  • HAMMANSKRAAL – 04 AUG 2022 (06H00) Peaceful protest expected at the Temba Police Station in Hamanskraal today, 04 August 2022. African National Congress (ANC) Gauteng Provincial Secretary Thembinkosi Nciza, National Spokesperson Pule Mabe, and members of the Tshwane Regional Leadership are expected to gather at the Jubilee Mall, Thomson Building, from 10H00 to march to the Temba Police Station. Participants are expected to deliver a memorandum regarding the increasing levels of crime and gender-based violence (GBV) in communities. Motorists are advised of possible ground travel disruptions expected in the area of the march. Police will be deployed in the area to monitor the situation.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 04 AUG 2022 (06H00) Protest expected at the Sunnyside Police Station today, 04 August 2022. Members of the African National Congress (ANC) are expected to march from Jubilee Park against the current increased rate of crime in the country and gender-based violence (GBV). The demonstrators are expected to gather at Jubilee Park from 10H00 to march to the Sunnyside Police Station. Affected routes include Jorissen Street and Leyds Street. Participants are set to disperse from the Sunnyside Police Station at 13H00. Tshwane Metro Police are expected to be deployed in the area to monitor the march and all affected streets. Motorists are advised to avoid affected routes and use alternative routes.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 04 AUG 2022 (06H00) Protest expected at the Mamelodi West Police Station today, 04 August 2022, from 10H00. Members of the African National Congress (ANC) will be marching from Tsomo Street against mass killings, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), crime in communities and crime in general.   • KRUGERSDORP – 04 AUG 2022 (07H15) UPDATE Reports indicate that demonstrators have barricaded all roads entering the Kagiso township with burning tyres and debris. Police are currently on the scene monitoring the situation. (06H00) Protest expected at the Engen Garage on the corner of Kagiso Avenue and Sebenzisa Drive in Kagiso today, 04 August 2022. Community members are expected to protest for the removal of illegal miners. The community stated that they will close all mining holes and demolish all informal housing next to the mine. This follows after the criminal attack on female victims at a mine in West Village on Thursday, 28 July 2022. Motorists are advised to avoid the area during the protest. Police will be dispatched to the scene.
  • BRAKPAN – 04 AUG 2022 (08H35) Protest reported on the R23 in the vicinity of the Geluksdal and Tsakane area. Reports indicate that demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery in the area. Demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) urged motorists to avoid the R23 and use alternative routes for the duration of the protest.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 04 AUG 2022

  • MOOI RIVER – 03 AUG 2022 (22H00) The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in KwaZulu-Natal has confirmed the arrests of two security guards in connection with the theft of Transnet copper cables in Mooi River. Hawks Spokesperson Capt Simphiwe Mhlongo has stated that the 670 meters (m) of copper cables valued at an estimated R180,000 have been recovered after Hawks questioned the two security personnel. Transnet officials have since identified the stolen cables, leading to the arrest of the two suspects. The detained guards have been charged with theft and damage to infrastructure. The suspects are set to appear before the Mooi River Magistrates Court on Thursday, 04 August 2022.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 04 AUG 2022

  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 03 AUG 2022 (19H20) UPDATE Demonstrators have delivered a Memorandum of Demands (MoD) to ANC provincial leadership at the Frans Mohlala House. The members are demanding that the Regional Executive Committee of the ANC in Waterberg and the Provincial Executive Committee in Limpopo desist from micromanaging the Municipal Council of Mogalakwena. ANC Madubung Region Chairperson Rosina Mokoka has also called on the ANC Caucus in Mogalakwena to be allowed to deliberate on recommended candidates without intimidation. (14H50) Peaceful protest reported outside the African National Congress’s (ANC’s) Provincial Headquarters at Frans Mohlala House in Polokwane. Members of the ANC are protesting to express their dissatisfaction about women in Mogalakwena being undermined. The women stated that there is an intention by powers to unfairly discriminate against the appointment of female candidates for senior management posts at Mogalakwena. The demonstrators are expected to hand over a memorandum of demands to the ANC provincial leadership.
  • POLOKWANE – 04 AUG 2022 (06H55) Protest expected at the Seshego Magistrates Court today, 04 August 2022, at 09H00. Reports indicate that members of the Lentswe Laka Foundation and Seshego Community Against Crime and Gangsterism (SCAGAG) demand that the court denies bail to Solly Galane, who has been accused of killing his spouse Phuti Mamabolo on 25 June 2022.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 04 AUG 2022

  • EMALAHLENI/ WITBANK – 03 AUG 2022 (20H10) UPDATE Protestors are barricading the R544 road approaching the N12 intersection in the vicinity of Tasbet Park, eMalahleni. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. (15H20) Road closure reported on the R544 at Tasbet Park due to the ongoing protest. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. (13H05) Police are attempting to disperse the demonstrators in eMalahleni. This follows after the Executive Mayor failed to address the demonstrators. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (11H30) The demonstrators are waiting for the Executive Mayor of eMalahleni Conny Nkalitshana to address them. The protest actions between Kroomdraai and Walter Sisulu intersections at eMalahleni have been cleared. (10H00) Protest reported outside the eMalahleni Local Municipality along Mandela Street. Residents of eMalahleni have marched to the municipality to protest against the grievances over the Johan Coetzee Attorneys as their debt collectors. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. Police are on the scene. (08H00) Road closure reported on the R544 between Klarinet and Pine Ridge. Demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. (07H40) Motorists have been advised to avoid the N4, including Verena Road, Lynnville Crossing and the N4 at Kwa Guqa Mall in eMalahleni. The eMalahleni Local Municipality’s Law enforcement has further advised motorists travelling to Pretoria/ Tshwane to use the N12 to avoid the N4 closure. (07H30) Protest reported on the N4 Highway between KwaGuqa and Witbank. This follows after the eMalahleni Civic Organisation (ECO) called for a planned shut down in eMalahleni in protest against the municipality’s use of Johan Coetzee Attorneys as their debt collector. Community members from Phola in Ogies, Klarinet and KwaGuqa, amongst others, will hold a shut down and march to the municipality at 09H00. The Emalahleni Local Municipality’s Law enforcement has advised motorists to avoid the area and use an alternative route. Police are on the scene.
  • EMALAHLENI/ WITBANK – 04 AUG 2022 (04H20) Protest reported on the R544 approaching the N12 intersection in Tasbet Park, eMalahleni. Community members are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstration is a continuation of calls by the eMalahleni Civic Organisation (ECO) to shut down the Witbank area in protest against the eMalahleni Municipality’s use of Johan Coetzee Attorneys as their debt collector. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Authorities have been dispatched to the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 04 AUG 2022

  • MMABATHO – 03 AUG 2022 (19H30) The North West Provincial Legislature has announced the appointments of Manenzhe Manenzhe as the new Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Tuelo Mbedzi as the new Executive Manager. The Provincial Legislature’s Communication Deputy Manager Namhla Luhabe has stated that Manenzhe previously held several positions in the public and private sector, while Mbedzi served as the Manager of Committees in the Legislature for ten years.
  • POTCHEFSTROOM – 04 AUG 2022 (06H00) Protest expected at the Dan Tloome Building today, 04 August 2022. Community members under the Potch Mass Empowerment Movement (PMEM) are expected to gather at the corner of Bathoeng Street and Lekhele Street at 06H00 to march via the N12 to the Dan Tloome Building in Potchefstroom. Affected routes are expected to include the N12, Beyers Naude Drive and Wolmarans Street. Community members are expected to protest against the JB Marks Municipality’s failure to appoint Ikageng residents. Motorists are advised to use alternative areas during the protest action and void affected routes. Police will be dispatched to monitor the protest.

  • MANYEDING – 04 AUG 2022 (07H50) Protest reported on the R372 in the vicinity of the Manyeding informal settlement. Reports indicate that demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. The is no reason for the demonstration, but previous demonstrations were related to service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are currently on the scene to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 04 AUG 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 03 AUG 2022 (22H30) Protest reported at the Baden Powell Drive and Swartklip Road intersection in the vicinity of Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. Community members are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. The protest is related to poor service delivery challenges in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Authorities have been dispatched to the scene.
  • CAPE TOWN – 04 AUG 2022 (06H00) Protest expected in the City Centre of Cape Town today, 04 August 2022. Members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in Western Cape have called on workers to mobilize in the #FightBack campaign against the high cost of living, such as electricity rates and violence in Cape Town. Demonstrators will be expected to gather on Hanover Street in Cape Town City Centre at 08H00 and proceed to the Western Cape Provincial Legislature Office and Civic Centre City of Cape Town.
