SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 05 AUG 2022

  • MCAMBALALA – 05 AUG 2022 (09H25) Protest reported in Mcambalala in Mount Fletcher. Demonstrators are demanding the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in the village to assist the community in stopping the rise of recent gang violence. A local source stated that the gang violence in the village has escalated to such a point that one can not leave his residence at night. The residents also urged the Elundini Local Municipality to release additional funds for the development of the village to assist younger generations in getting employed.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 05 AUG 2022

  • KOPPIES – 05 AUG 2022 (05H50) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) political party are expected to gather in the Kwakwatsi Central Business District (CBD) today, 05 August 2022, at 09H30. The EFF stated that they will be gathering at the CBD. The EFF further noted that they are expected to be addressed by the Ngwathe Municipal Mayor to give a progress report on what the Municipality has done to their grievances raised at a previous community meeting. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police services will be dispatched to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 05 AUG 2022

  • BOKSBURG – 04 AUG 2022 (22H10) Protest reported on the M35 in the vicinity of the Ramaphosa informal settlement in Boksburg. Reports indicate that community members have barricaded the road between the Ramaphosa Taxi Rank and Commissioner Street with burning tyres and debris. Members are also throwing stones at passerby vehicles. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Authorities have been dispatched to the scene.
  • TEMBISA – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Tania Campbell is expected to attend a community meeting at the Mehlareng Stadium today, 05 August 2022. Campbell stated that during the meeting, she will discuss grievances raised by the residents and elaborate on ways of improving them.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) Protest expected at the Johannesburg Labour Court located at the Arbour Square Building in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, from 09H00 today, 05 August 2022. Members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) are expected to protest outside the court against a ruling by Justice Moshoana to deny the union Leave of Appeal in a matter of authoritative judgments on NUMSA leadership structure operations. NUMSA is seeking the set-aside of the judgement delivered by Justice Moshoana. Motorists are advised to avoid the area during the demonstration. Police are expected to be deployed in the area during the protest.
  • VANDERBIJLPARK – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) Protest expected by members of the African National Congress (ANC) today, 05 August 2022, at 09H00. The members will gather at the Vanderbijlpark Traffic Department offices and march to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Vanderbijlpark Police Station against gender-based violence (GBV), mass killings and other crimes. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the duration of the protest. The Police are expected to deploy officers to the area.
  • EKURHULENI – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) The Presidency has announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver a keynote address during the closing ceremony of the Presidential Social Sector Summit 2022 today, 05 August 2022. The Summit is set to be held at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Ekurhuleni between Thursday, 04 August 2022, and today, 05 August 2022, under the theme of Fostering Social Cohesion to enable Socio-Economic Participation in Communities. The Summit is expected to consider dialogue reports from the nine provinces on challenges raised regarding several matters, including funding, regulatory issues, poverty, inequality, employment, and strengthening democratic participation. An estimated 600 delegates from various Civil Society Organisations (CSO) from across South Africa are expected to attend the Summit. The closing session is set to occur from 09H00 on Friday, 05 August 2022.
  • KRUGERSDORP – 05 AUG 2022 (07H05) Protest reported at the intersection of Robert Broom Drive and Van Riebeeck Road. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations held were related to service delivery problems. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Local Police have been dispatched to the area to monitor the situation.
  • BEKKERSDAL – 05 AUG 2022 (09H05) Protest reported in Bekkersdal. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded all entry points to the informal settlement from the R93. Demonstrators are protesting due to the increase in violence caused by foreigners in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Local Police authorities are currently on scene to monitor the situation.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 05 AUG 2022 (09H10) Cash in transit (CIT) robbery reported at the intersection of Chris Hani Road and Golden Highway. Reports indicate that an unconfirmed number of armed suspects have robbed a G4S armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money during a cross-pavement CIT incident. No injuries have been reported at this stage. Authorities have been dispatched to the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 05 AUG 2022

  • DURBAN – 04 AUG 2022 (21H50) Fire reported at the corner of Acutt Avenue and Chris Hani Road in Park Hill, Durban North. Reports indicate that a large fire is ongoing outside Swan Metals. The reason for the fire remains undetermined at this time. The Durban Fire Department has been dispatched to the scene. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling in the area.
  • DURBAN – 04 AUG 2022 (23H00) Protest reported on the M7 between Link Road and the N2 in the vicinity of Shallcross, Durban. Demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris to protest against service delivery-related matters. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Authorities have been dispatched to the scene.
  • DURBAN – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) KwaZulu-Natal is expected to launch a public health service delivery campaign at the Phoenix Mortuary in Durban at 12H00 today, 05 August 2022. The campaign aims to address vacant positions, infrastructure challenges, inadequate equipment, health and safety concerns, security issues, insourcing of all outsourced services, and implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI).
  • LADYSMITH – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) KwaZulu-Natal has announced plans to launch a public health service delivery campaign at the Ladysmith Regional Hospital on Malcolm Road at 13H00 today, 05 August 2022. The campaign aims to address vacant positions, infrastructure challenges, inadequate equipment, health and safety concerns, security issues, insourcing of all outsourced services, and the National Health Insurance (NHI) implementation.

  • GREYTOWN – 05 AUG 2022 (06H50) UPDATE Reports indicate that the R33 has been opened for normal traffic flow after the demonstrators have cleared the road. (06H45) Protest reported on the R33 at the Albert Falls/Triple A Beef intersection. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris.   • UMZINTO – 05 AUG 2022 (07H45) Protest reported in the Roseville residential area in Umzinto. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning debris.   • NONGOMA – 05 AUG 2022 (07H50) Protest reported on the R66 between Nongoma and Mahlabathini. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Local Police have been dispatched to the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 05 AUG 2022

  • POLOKWANE – 05 AUG 2022 (06H40) The Ambassador of Taiwan to South Africa, Chung-Yi Ho, has embarked on a working visit to meet with the Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the University of Limpopo (UL), Thembinkosi Mabila. Mabila stated that during the meeting, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for health science exchange programmes, which will allow master’s and doctoral students the ability to study in Taiwanannually to exchange knowledge and collaborate at the Taipei Medical University (TMU).

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 05 AUG 2022

  • PIENAAR – 04 AUG 2022 (21H40) Mpumalanga Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the recent fatal shooting of a Police Sergeant stationed at the Kabokweni Police Station. This follows after Sergeant Mandlenkosi Happy Thwala’s deceased body had recently been discovered at his place of residence in Gedlembane, Pienaar. Provincial Police Spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala has stated that Sergeant Thwala had allegedly been shot multiple times with his service pistol. Mohlala has noted that Thwala’s vehicle, cellphone and firearm have since been discovered abandoned in nearby shrubbery. The Spokesperson has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection to the murder. The suspect is set to appear before the local Magistrates Court on Friday, 05 August 2022.
  • ERMELO – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) The Executive Mayor of the Gert Sibande District Municipality, Walter Mngomezulu, announced that the Mayoral Imbizo is expected to take place today, 05 August 2022 from 11H00 at the Kwadela Sports Ground. Mngomezulu urges the community of the Municipality to participate in the Imbizo to raise their concerns about improving service delivery in the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 05 AUG 2022

  • BRITS – 04 AUG 2022 (19H10) Cash in transit (CIT) robbery reported at the Lethlabile Mall shopping centre in Brits. Reports indicate that an unconfirmed number of armed suspects have robbed a Fidelity armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money during a cross-pavement CIT incident. A security officer also sustained gunshot injuries during the robbery. Authorities are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 05 AUG 2022

  • ALEXANDER BAY – 04 AUG 2022 (20H45) Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has requested port and rail developers to respond to its Request for Qualification (RFQ). The RFQ is intended to obtain information for designing, funding, and constructing the planned Boegoebaai port and rail infrastructure in the Northern Cape. Additionally, the RFQ seeks a rail solution proposal to connect the port to mining and industrial hubs in Northern Cape. The TNPA has set 02 November 2022 at 12H00 as the closing date for responses. Additionally, TNPA will conduct a briefing session on 16 August 2022. The port is expected to be operationalised by 2026.
  • MANYEDING – 05 AUG 2022 (08H45) Protest reported on the R372 in the vicinity of the Manyeding informal settlement. Reports indicate that demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. The is no reason for the demonstration, but previous demonstrations were related to service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are currently on the scene to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 05 AUG 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 04 AUG 2022 (22H30) Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling on Baden Powell Drive and Swarklip Road in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Reports indicate that debris is currently obstructing several travelling lanes on Swarklip Road approaching Baden Powell Drive. This follows recent unrest and service delivery-related protests by community members, during which participants barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The situation remains unstable. However, demonstrators have dispersed, and authorities are continuously monitoring the area. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant when travelling in the area.
