SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 05 AUG 2022

  • MCAMBALALA – 05 AUG 2022 (09H25) Protest reported in Mcambalala in Mount Fletcher. Demonstrators are demanding the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) in the village to assist the community in stopping the rise of recent gang violence. A local source stated that the gang violence in the village has escalated to such a point that one can not leave his residence at night. The residents also urged the Elundini Local Municipality to release additional funds for the development of the village to assist younger generations in getting employed.
  • MQANDULI – 05 AUG 2022 (11H05) Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula is expected to visit the R411, a regional road between Mnqanduli and Coffee Bay, today, 05 August 2022. Mbalula stated that after his visit to the R411, he will engage with the Mqanduli community to elaborate on the Government’s intervention plan for the road.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 05 AUG 2022

  • KOPPIES – 05 AUG 2022 (05H50) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) political party are expected to gather in the Kwakwatsi Central Business District (CBD) today, 05 August 2022, at 09H30. The EFF stated that they will be gathering at the CBD. The EFF further noted that they are expected to be addressed by the Ngwathe Municipal Mayor to give a progress report on what the Municipality has done to their grievances raised at a previous community meeting. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police services will be dispatched to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 05 AUG 2022

  • JOHANNESBURG – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) Protest expected at the Johannesburg Labour Court located at the Arbour Square Building in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, from 09H00 today, 05 August 2022. Members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) are expected to protest outside the court against a ruling by Justice Moshoana to deny the union Leave of Appeal in a matter of authoritative judgments on NUMSA leadership structure operations. NUMSA is seeking the set-aside of the judgement delivered by Justice Moshoana. Motorists are advised to avoid the area during the demonstration. Police are expected to be deployed in the area during the protest.
  • VANDERBIJLPARK – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) Protest expected by members of the African National Congress (ANC) today, 05 August 2022, at 09H00. The members will gather at the Vanderbijlpark Traffic Department offices and march to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Vanderbijlpark Police Station against gender-based violence (GBV), mass killings and other crimes. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the duration of the protest. The Police are expected to deploy officers to the area.
  • EKURHULENI – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) The Presidency has announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver a keynote address during the closing ceremony of the Presidential Social Sector Summit 2022 today, 05 August 2022. The Summit is set to be held at the Birchwood Conference Centre in Ekurhuleni between Thursday, 04 August 2022, and today, 05 August 2022, under the theme of Fostering Social Cohesion to enable Socio-Economic Participation in Communities. The Summit is expected to consider dialogue reports from the nine provinces on challenges raised regarding several matters, including funding, regulatory issues, poverty, inequality, employment, and strengthening democratic participation. An estimated 600 delegates from various Civil Society Organisations (CSO) from across South Africa are expected to attend the Summit. The closing session is set to occur from 09H00 on Friday, 05 August 2022.
  • KRUGERSDORP – 05 AUG 2022 (07H05) Protest reported at the intersection of Robert Broom Drive and Van Riebeeck Road. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to service delivery problems. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Local Police have been dispatched to the area to monitor the situation.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 05 AUG 2022 (09H10) Cash in transit (CIT) robbery reported at the intersection of Chris Hani Road and Golden Highway. Reports indicate that an unconfirmed number of armed suspects have robbed a G4S armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money during a cross-pavement CIT incident. No injuries have been reported at this stage. Authorities have been dispatched to the scene.
  • TEMBISA – 05 AUG 2022 (09H45) UPDATE A heavy police presence consisting of the South African Police Services (SAPS), Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department and private security agencies have accompanied Mayor Campbell. During her address, Mayor Campbell announced the establishment of a Customer Care Centre after the Rabasotho Centre had been set alight during the Tembisa protests. Additionally, Mayor Campbell noted that the City will open day sessions for two weeks to educate residents regarding the services available to them. During the discussion, members will explain why the City has decreased the free electricity supply to 50 kilowatts (kW) from 100 kW following a recommendation by the Treasury. (06H00) Reports indicate that Mayor Tania Campbell has arrived at the Mehlareng Stadium accompanied by Police Inyalas. (06H00) Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Tania Campbell is expected to attend a community meeting at the Mehlareng Stadium today, 05 August 2022. Campbell stated that during the meeting, she will discuss grievances raised by the residents and elaborate on ways of improving them.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 05 AUG 2022 (12H00) Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula announced that on Monday, 08 August 2022, the Ministry of Transport is launching the ValaZonke initiative. Mbalula stated that the initiative aims to assist local and Provincial governments through assistance from the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) to fix and maintain potholes in the country.
  • BEKKERSDAL – 05 AUG 2022 (12H15) UPDATE Reports indicate that a group of pupils joined the group of demonstrators. Motorists are still advised to avoid the area as the demonstrators are protesting through Bekkersdal. Local Police authorities are still monitoring the demonstration. (09H05) Protest reported in Bekkersdal. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded all entry points to the informal settlement from the R93. Demonstrators are protesting due to the increase in violence caused by foreigners in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Local Police authorities are currently on scene to monitor the situation.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 05 AUG 2022 (12H25) Cash in transit (CIT) robbery reported near South Gate Mall in Mondeor. Reports indicate that an unconfirmed number of armed suspects robbed an armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money during the incident. No injuries have been reported at this stage. Authorities have been dispatched to the scene. Further updates will be provided regarding the CIT.
  • GERMISTON – 05 AUG 2022 (13H20) Cash in transit (CIT) robbery reported in the Palm Ridge area, Germiston. Reports indicate that an unknown number of suspects fired at an armoured vehicle. No injuries have been reported at this stage. Security forces have been deployed to the area. Further updates will be issued as the situation progresses.
  • KRUGERSDORP – 05 AUG 2022 (14H15) Protest reported by members of the Kagiso Community. The members are continuing their protest of 04 August 2022 to identify the location of additional illegal miners in the community. This follows after the South African Police Services (SAPS) collaborated with community Leaders to apprehend illegal miners through joint search operations on 04 August 2022. Reports indicate that the community are setting alight the houses of illegal miners in the area. Additionally, the community is confiscating copper cables expected to have been stolen. The South African Police Services (SAPS) is expected to deploy officers to the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 05 AUG 2022

  • DURBAN – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) KwaZulu-Natal is expected to launch a public health service delivery campaign at the Phoenix Mortuary in Durban at 12H00 today, 05 August 2022. The campaign aims to address vacant positions, infrastructure challenges, inadequate equipment, health and safety concerns, security issues, insourcing of all outsourced services, and implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI).
  • LADYSMITH – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) KwaZulu-Natal has announced plans to launch a public health service delivery campaign at the Ladysmith Regional Hospital on Malcolm Road at 13H00 today, 05 August 2022. The campaign aims to address vacant positions, infrastructure challenges, inadequate equipment, health and safety concerns, security issues, insourcing of all outsourced services, and the National Health Insurance (NHI) implementation.

  • GREYTOWN – 05 AUG 2022 (06H50) UPDATE Reports indicate that the R33 has been opened for normal traffic flow after the demonstrators have cleared the road. (06H45) Protest reported on the R33 at the Albert Falls/Triple A Beef intersection. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the protest. Local Police have been dispatched to the area to monitor the situation.
  • UMZINTO – 05 AUG 2022 (07H45) Protest reported in the Roseville residential area in Umzinto. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Local Police have been dispatched to the area.
  • NONGOMA – 05 AUG 2022 (07H50) Protest reported on the R66 between Nongoma and Mahlabathini. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Local Police have been dispatched to the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 05 AUG 2022

  • POLOKWANE – 05 AUG 2022 (06H40) The Ambassador of Taiwan to South Africa, Chung-Yi Ho, has embarked on a working visit to meet with the Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the University of Limpopo (UL), Thembinkosi Mabila. Mabila stated that during the meeting, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for health science exchange programmes, which will allow master’s and doctoral students the ability to study in Taiwan annually to exchange knowledge and collaborate at the Taipei Medical University (TMU).

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 05 AUG 2022

  • ERMELO – 05 AUG 2022 (06H00) The Executive Mayor of the Gert Sibande District Municipality, Walter Mngomezulu, announced that the Mayoral Imbizo is expected to take place today, 05 August 2022, from 11H00 at the Kwadela Sports Ground. Mngomezulu urges the community of the Municipality to participate in the Imbizo to raise their concerns about improving service delivery in the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 05 AUG 2022

  • RUSTENBURG – 05 AUG 2022 (10H15) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) political party announced their Women’s Day Commemoration is expected to be held on Thursday, 11 August 2022, at 10H00 at the Rustenburg Civic Centre. The EFF stated that the commemoration will be addressed by the National Chairperson of the EFF, Veronica Menta.
  • RUSTENBURG – 05 AUG 2022 (16H50) Transnet Freight Rail and Botswana Railways will be collaborating to repair the 126-kilometre (km) rail line between Swartruggens and Mahikeng. The collaboration follows a high-level South Africa (SA)-Botswana business meeting. The Railway Associations are expected to operationalise the railway by 2024. The project will be funded jointly by SA and Botswana, with the operations set to be implemented by the entities. The project will increase the trade between SA and Botswana and provide transport for heavy haul trains from Botswana to the Richards Bay and Durban ports. The entities will additionally construct a connecting line from Mmamabula to Lephalale. Transnet is expected to further collaborate with Botswana Rail regarding security interventions to decrease cable theft incidents and the vandalisation of infrastructure.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 05 AUG 2022

  • KIMBERLEY – 05 AUG 2022 (04H55) Cash in transit (CIT) robbery reported on the R31 road. Reports indicate that an unknown number of armed gunmen attacked the armoured vehicle at 04H55. This followed after a BMW pushed the SBV vehicle off the road. The suspects have used explosives to gain access inside the vehicle. One SBV officer died during the incident, and three others have been injured. The injured officers have been transferred to a local hospital. The suspects have stolen an undisclosed amount of cash. The South African Police Services (SAPS) have established a 72-hour search operation to apprehend the suspects.
  • MANYEDING – 05 AUG 2022 (08H45) Protest reported on the R372 in the vicinity of the Manyeding informal settlement. Reports indicate that demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. The is no reason for the demonstration, but previous demonstrations were related to service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are currently on the scene to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 05 AUG 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 05 AUG 2022 (17H05) Three suspects are expected to appear before the Athlone Magistrate Court on Monday, 08 August 2022. Hawks Officers had arrested the suspects following an intelligence-driven search operation along the N1. Reports indicate that the officers received intelligence regarding a truck transporting narcotics along the road. The officers searched the vehicle after they identified the truck at Winelands Engen garage travelling towards Cape Town. During the operation, the officers confiscated narcotics valued at approximately R400 million.
