SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 10 AUG 2022

  • SIBANGWENI – 10 AUG 2022 (08H30) Eskom announced the suspension of maintenance services in the Sibangweni Village. Eskom stated that the suspension followed after residents in the village threatened an Eskom technician at gunpoint over the weekend. Eskom stated that the technicians were deployed to repair vandalised electricity meters in the area, which had been tampered with in an effort to prevent illegal connections. Eskom further noted that they opened a criminal case at the Mthatha Police Station. The case was, however, transferred to the Libode Police Station for further investigations.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 10 AUG 2022

  • MARQUARD – 10 AUG 2022 (06H30) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are expected to hold a Women’s Day rally at the Leihlong Hall in Marquard on Friday, 12 August 2022, from 12H00. The EFF stated that the party’s leader Julius Malema is expected to address the community members attending the rally.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 10 AUG 2022

  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 09 AUG 2022 (22H10) Protest expected by members of the National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW) on 23 August 2022. The members will be gathering at the Thaba Tshwane Health Department Offices from 10H00. Further, the members will continue to march to the Health Department, Social Development Department, National Treasury and conclude the march at the Union Buildings. The members will be protesting against the cost of living prices, the implementation of loadshedding, Austerity Programmes and other issues. NUPSAW is requesting the permanent absorption of all contract workers in the Health Department and the insourcing of cleaners and security officers in the public service sector. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the duration of demonsrations.
  • CULLINAN – 10 AUG 2022 (06H40) Protest reported in Refilwe. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded all entry and exit points with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to service delivery issues. Local authorities are currently on scene to monitor the situation. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the protest.
  • KRUGERSDORP – 10 AUG 2022 (07H40) The Zama Zama’s have resumed operations in the East Rand of Gauteng. Reports indicate that several groups of Zama Zama’s were seen mining around Germiston, Brakpan, Springs, Golden Drive, Putfontein and Benoni. This follows after communities, and local authorities made several efforts in the past week to remove them from the mining sites to restore peace and normality in their respective communities.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 10 AUG 2022 (08H10) Protest expected by the African Unite Borders Bus Trucks Association today, 10 August 2022, at the Union Buildings. The Association stated that the demonstration aims to reveal the alleged corruption within the transport network in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD). The Association stated that local law enforcement agencies are not doing anything regarding the city’s illegal bus ranks in the area, which transports people to various African countries. Reports indicate that around 200 people are expected to gather at the Union Buildings to hand over a memorandum to a representative from the Presidency.
  • WESTONARIA – 10 AUG 2022 (09H00) Protest reported on Neptunus Road in Borwa, Westonaria. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to service delivery issues. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes for the duration of the protest. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 10 AUG 2022

  • DURBAN – 09 AUG 2022 (19H00) The eThekwini Municipality has prohibited the public access to affected water at Isipingo beach lagoon until repairs to the pump station are finalised. The public is warned not to collect or consume dead fish that washed up at Isipingo beach lagoon. This follows after dead fish floating in the water has been reported today, 09 August 2022.
  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 10 AUG 2022 (07H00) KwaZulu Natal (KZN) Legislature Spokesperson Wesley Canham announced that a special sitting of the KZN Legislature is scheduled for today, 10 August 2022. Canham stated that the sitting is aimed at the swearing-in of the new Premier Nomusa Dube.
  • NYONI – 10 AUG 2022 (07H15) Protest reported on White Street between Isithebe and Nyoni. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded White Street with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to service delivery issues. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the protest. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area to monitor the situation.
  • DURBAN – 10 AUG 2022 (08H20) Protest expected by several groups in the Durban Central Business District (CBD) tomorrow, 11 August 2022, at 08H00. Demonstrators are expected to gather at the Kwamashu Rank. Members of the Umkhonto Wesizwe, Opesa, ATDF ASA and Operation Dudula are expected to clean up the CBD area from illegal foreigners, narcotic substances, crime and unregistered businesses. The public are advised to avoid the CBD area for the duration of the protest. Local authorities have been notified and will implement the necessary safety controls.
  • ESTCOURT – 10 AUG 2022 (09H05) Protest reported in Wembezi area, Estcourt. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 10 AUG 2022

  • TZANEEN – 10 AUG 2022 (00H50) The African National Congress (ANC) Limpopo division has removed Tolly Mashamaite from his legislature position. Mashamaite has been removed following the party’s resolution on the step aside rule. This follows due to the corruption allegations against Mashamaite. Mashamaite has been transferred from his role as Chair of Chairs at the legislature to an ordinary member.
  • MASERUMO – 10 AUG 2022 (05H50) Protest expected by members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) at the Nebo magistrates Court today, 10 August 2022, from 09H00. The protest is in support of Refiloe Malope, who is a victim of gender-based violence. COSATU calls on the court not to grant bail to the accused person. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the protest. Local authorities have been notified and will be deployed to the area to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 10 AUG 2022

  • LOWS CREEK – 09 AUG 2022 (20H15) Protest reported on the R38 in the vicinity of Lows Creek between Malelane and Barberton. Community members are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators are barricading the road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

  • POTCHEFSTROOM – 10 AUG 2022 (07H10) Protest reported in Promosa. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded several roads in the area with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to service delivery issues. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the protest. SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 10 AUG 2022

  • POSTMASBURG – 10 AUG 2022 (09H30) The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) of Health, Maruping Lekwene, announced the donation of more than R21 million from the Kolomela Mine and Sishen Iron Ore Company towards the Postmasburg Hospital. Lekwene stated that R2,7 million was used to acquire new equipment and R13,5 million for the renovation of the facility’s theatre. Lekwene stated that the donation will assist the Hospital in improving medical care to residents.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 10 AUG 2022

  • OUDTSHOORN – 09 AUG 2022 (19H10) Western Cape Minister of Infrastructure, Tertuis Simmers, stated that the key road projects currently underway in the Central Karoo are progressing well. These include R250-million routine maintenance on the N12, which links traffic coming from the N1 towards Oudtshoorn. The project has created 317 job opportunities, with 176 being youth and 87 women. Meanwhile, the Department of Transport is embarking on a national project to repair potholes across South Africa. It will be spearheaded by the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), which is expected to work with provincial and municipal officials.
  • CAPE TOWN – 09 AUG 2022 (21H55) Delft residents have requested the South African Police Station (SAPS) to establish an additional Police Station in the area. The request has been made following an assessment conducted by South African Movement Leader Mmusi Maimane on Tuesday, 09 August 2022. During his assessment, it had been revealed that the Delft Police Station recorded the third-highest number of rape cases and a low prosecution rate. The additional Police Station is set to decrease the number of crimes and increase overall prosecutions in the area.
  • CAPE TOWN – 09 AUG 2022 (23H15) Shooting reported on the Voortrekker road connection to Van Eyssen road. Reports indicate that an unknown number of suspects fired rounds in the area. The South African Police Services (SAPS) have deployed officers to monitor the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
  • CAPE TOWN – 10 AUG 2022 (07H55) Protest expected by the Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) group on 16 August 2022 at the Parliament in Cape Town. The demonstration is aimed at the Government, which has not abided by the agreement reached in the mining sector. The agreement entailed that more mines will be opened in the country to enhance job opportunities for the people of South Africa. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the protest.
