SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 30 AUG 2022

  • EAST LONDON – 29 AUG 2022 (23H30) The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has condemned the recent attempted assassination of Buffalo City Acting Manager Nceba Ncunyana. This follows after unidentified armed suspects recently opened fire at Ncunyana’s vehicle at his residence in Vincent on Friday, 26 August 2022. The incident follows after Ncunyana had also previously been attacked at his residence in 2021. The Buffalo City Acting Manager has since been hospitalised for gunshot injuries. The ANC has called on the Municipality to increase efforts to ensure Ncunyana’s security and protection urgently. The party has also requested law enforcement agencies to expedite investigations into the situation in an effort to apprehend the perpetrators.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 30 AUG 2022

  • SASOLBURG – 29 AUG 2022 (20H00) The Sasolburg-based Metsimaholo Local Municipality has registered a revenue loss of approximately R2 million due to the theft and vandalisation of municipal property. Municipality Spokesperson Gino Alberts has stated that electricity cables valued at an estimated R1,9 million have been stolen since the beginning of 2022. Alberts has noted that the figure excludes the cost of repair to infrastructure and other materials due to vandalism. The cable theft incidents have also affected residents and small businesses due to subsequent power supply interruptions. Municipality Mayor Jeff Zwane has condemned the vandalism and theft of electrical infrastructure and cables in the municipal area, calling on law enforcement agencies, Police, and communities to assist in efforts to address the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 30 AUG 2022

  • SANDTON – 30 AUG 2022 (08H30) Eskom has announced that load reduction is expected to be implemented in several areas of Tshwane between 05H00 and 09H00 and 17H00 until 19H00 today, 30 August 2022. The power utility has noted that the service disruption aims to prevent further overloading of the electricity network and subsequent damage to power infrastructure. The load reduction is set to be implemented in several areas, including Bossemanskraal, Mathibestad, Ekandustria, Hammanskraal, Bronkhorstspruit and Kopanong. Eskom will issue relevant updates to affected residents as the situation progresses.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 30 AUG 2022

  • CATO RIDGE – 29 AUG 2022 (21H45) Road closure reported on the N3 Eastbound approaching the Hammarsdale interchange in the vicinity of Cato Ridge. The road has been closed to allow recovery operations after a truck lost its load. Reports indicate that community members have also looted goods from the lost load. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. All services are on the scene.
  • MUDEN – 30 AUG 2022 (05H55) Protest reported on the R74 in the vicinity of Muden. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the R74 with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area to monitor the situation.
  • MURCHISON – 30 AUG 2022 (07H50) Protest reported on the N2 Murchison Road in the vicinity of Murchison District Hospital towards Kokstad. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to poor service delivery in the area. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes for the duration of the protest. Local authorities are currently on the scene to monitor the situation.
  • VRYHEID – 30 AUG 2022 (08H00) UPDATE Motorists are advised to still avoid the R34 outside Vryheid as the protest action is still ongoing. Demonstrators started to barricade the road with burning tyres and debris. Local authorities are currently on the scene to monitor the situation. Updates to follow. (20H25) Protest reported on the R34 outside Vryheid approaching Melmoth near the Klipfontein Dam turnoff. Community members are protesting against poor service delivery being experienced in the area. The road has been closed to traffic. All services are on the scene. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 30 AUG 2022

  • MANKWENG – 29 AUG 2022 (21H50) The Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services has announced that Minister Ronald Lamola is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the University of Limpopo in Turfloop at 08H30 on 30 August 2022. The address is expected to focus on the role of the Constitution in addressing the imbalances in socio-economic rights. Motorists are advised of possible ground travel disruptions expected in the area during the address.
  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 30 AUG 2022 (04H40) Protest expected at the Polokwane Municipality building in central Polokwane today, 30 August 2022. Community members from Seshego, Lithuli Park and other extensions are expected to assemble at the Seshego Circle Centre from 05H00 and march to the municipal offices via Nelson Mandela Drive to hand over a Memorandum of Demands. The illegal demonstration aims to protest against the alleged billing of indigent households by the Polokwane Municipality. Seshego Community Against Crime and Gangsterism Chairperson Vincent Kunutu has stated that participants are expected to shut down all services during the demonstration. Motorists are advised to avoid affected areas during the protest. Authorities will be deployed to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 30 AUG 2022

  • MATSULU – 29 AUG 2022 (22H20) UPDATE The scene has been cleared on the N4 between Nkomazi Plaza and the Kaalrug turnoff in the vicinity of Matsulu. The movement of traffic is gradually being restored to normalcy. (21H40) The N4 between Nkomazi Plaza and the Kaalrug turnoff in the vicinity of Matsulu remains closed to traffic. The road has been closed to allow the continuation of recovery efforts. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. All services are on the scene. (17H00) A stop-and-go has been implemented on the N4 between Nkomazi Toll Plaza and Malelane. Heavy traffic backlog is reported due to the heavy motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (15H10) Earlier this afternoon Emer-G-Med Paramedics responded to the scene of a serious motor vehicle collision on the N4 between Malelane and Komatipoort. Two coal trucks collided head-on. As a result of the impact, one of the heavy motor vehicles caught fire. The driver was declared dead on the arrival of paramedics. The driver of the second truck was treated for minor injuries. In a second incident, a light motor vehicle collided with the two heavy motor vehicles, resulting in four adult occupants sustaining moderate injuries. They were treated and stabilised on the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care. Recovery is in progress. (13H10) Road closure reported on the N4 between Nkomazi Toll Plaza and Malelane. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Two heavy motor vehicles are alight. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.

  • RUSTENBURG – 30 AUG 2022 (06H05) Eskom has announced that load reduction is expected to be implemented in the North West province’s Klerksdorp, Mmabatho, Vryburg and Rustenburg sectors between 05H00 and 09H00 today, 30 August 2022. SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 30 AUG 2022

  • KURUMAN – 29 AUG 2022 (19H20) The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Team has confirmed the arrests of four suspects on allegations of defrauding members of the community in Kuruman. Hawks Spokesperson Captain Tebogo Thebe has stated that the suspects allegedly operated an unregistered and fraudulent company. The suspects’ modus operandi included assisting retired and unemployed civilians to expedite their claims from the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) or pension payouts for an upfront fee of R1,300, or 30% of the payout from the claim upon finalisation. The Hawks launched an investigation into the matter after community members reported the situation to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation. The suspects have since been arrested based on available evidence and for operating an unregistered and fraudulent business. The suspects are set to appear before the Kuruman Magistrates Court in due course.
  • COLESBERG – 30 AUG 2022 (06H00) The Northern Cape Provincial Legislature (NCPL) is scheduled to host its Provincial Women’s Parliament in Colesberg between today, 30 August 2022 and Wednesday, 31 August 2022. Legislature Spokesperson Carmen Gopane has stated that the house sitting is expected to include discussions regarding foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in communities in Britstown, De Aar and Colesberg, as well as matters affecting women in the province, Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), and economic opportunities, among others. Gopane has noted that the Portfolio Committee on Department of Environment, Nature Conservation, Agriculture and Land Reform and Democracy Works Foundations are expected to provide presentations on opportunities for women in the green energy sector, agriculture and access to land.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 30 AUG 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 30 AUG 2022 (06H00) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to respond to queries from Members of Parliament (MPs) in the National Assembly today, 30 August 2022. The Presidency has stated that MPs are expected to query President Ramaphosa on his plans to stabilise the country’s electricity network and the Government’s response to illegal migration. Ramaphosa is also expected to respond to allegations of money laundering, among others, in relation to the theft of a large amount of foreign currency at his Phala Phala farm in 2020. Presidency Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya has stated that Ramaphosa is also set to discuss the importance of the recent Presidential Social Sector Summit in ensuring that civil society is effective in addressing poverty and inequality. Magwenya has noted that Ramaphosa is expected to interact with MPs through a virtual platform as he will not be physically present in Parliament during the session.
