  • MTHATHA – 30 AUG 2022 (14H30) UPDATE The R61 near Joe Slovo informal settlement between Mthatha and the KSD TVET College in Cicira Village has been reopened to traffic. SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 30 AUG 2022

  • THEUNISSEN – 30 AUG 2022 (11H50) The Masilonyana Local Municipality in Theunissen is expected to hold a special council sitting today, 30 August 2022. This is to elect a new acting Mayor. This follows after Mayor, Dimakatso Modise, was suspended by the African National Congress (ANC) party following her arrest in March 2022. Modise is charged with incitement of violence, which allegedly resulted in the residence of then-Mayor Kunatu Stephen Koalane’s parents being set alight amidst violent unrest.
  • ROSENDAL – 30 AUG 2022 (13H30) Residents of Rosendal have raised concerns about the continued issues of electricity supply. One of the residents in this area, which is part of the Dihlabeng Local Municipality, stated that they had been experiencing interrupted electricity supply for weeks, with little assistance and communication from the municipality. Meanwhile, the Municipal Spokesperson, Tsheliso Maitse, stated that the municipality is working to ensure that the community’s concerns are addressed. The municipality is currently installing the Auto-Recloser, and the work is expected to be finalised today, 30 August 2022.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 30 AUG 2022

  • SANDTON – 30 AUG 2022 (08H30) Eskom has announced that load reduction is expected to be implemented in several areas of Tshwane between 05H00 and 09H00 and 17H00 until 19H00 today, 30 August 2022. The power utility has noted that the service disruption aims to prevent further overloading of the electricity network and subsequent damage to power infrastructure. The load reduction is set to be implemented in several areas, including Bossemanskraal, Mathibestad, Ekandustria, Hammanskraal, Bronkhorstspruit and Kopanong. Eskom will issue relevant updates to affected residents as the situation progresses.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 30 AUG 2022 (11H20) Protest reported outside the Hillbrow Community Health Centre by Operation Dudula. Members of Operation Dudula are protesting against foreign nationals receiving services from the facility. The demonstrators are preventing foreign nationals from entering the facility. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police have been dispatched to the scene.
  • SANDTON – 30 AUG 2022 (13H00) President Cyril Ramaphosa will, on Thursday, 01 September 2022, address a national conference focused on local government accountability, service delivery and human rights. The two-day event at the Capital On The Park Hotel in Sandton on 31 August and 01 September is co-convened by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission). President Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address on Thursday. The South African Human Rights Commission has, as part of its mandate, identified a range of systemic challenges at the local sphere of governance, that hinder the attainment and enjoyment of human rights. The conference will see critical voices and role-players deliberate on local government challenges with the aim of enhancing human rights-based service delivery.
  • SOWETO – 30 AUG 2022 (14H10) The Soweto Independent Practitioners Association is calling on Police to address the armed criminals who are increasingly targeting private doctors. The association stated that it had recorded ten armed robbery cases at Soweto surgeries in the past five months. Spokesperson Brenda Sibeko stated that they had engaged with senior Gauteng police officials after Doctor George Koboka was killed at his surgery in March 2022. However, no measures have been implemented to address the matter. Patients are also affected by crimes targeting private doctors. In June 2022, three patients were injured when robbers, pretending to be patients, walked into surgery in Protea Glen and demanded cellphones and money from everyone inside the practice. One suspect has been arrested in the Koboka murder case. The accused will appear at the Orlando Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 08 September 2022.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 30 AUG 2022 (14H15) UPDATE Members of Operation Dudula have been protesting at the Engen Garden City Quickfill, demanding that it employ only South Africans. The leadership of Operation Dudula and the management of the petrol station held a meeting to discuss the matter. Operations at the station were briefly suspended due to the protest as motorists were turned away by petrol attendants. Operations have since resumed. Police and private security are in the area monitoring the situation. (12H45) Protest reported at the Engen Garden City Quickfill on the corner of High Street and Bartlett Road in Mayfair. Demonstrators are barricading the entrance of the petrol station. The demonstrators are allegedly protesting against foreign nationals. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area.
  • SANDTON – 30 AUG 2022 (16H20) UPDATE The N3 north after the London Road exit in Linbro Park has been reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Traffic is backlogged. Police are monitoring the situation. (15H30) Protest reported on the N3 north after the London Road exit in Linbro Park. The demonstrators are barricading the road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched to the scene.
  • GERMISTON – 30 AUG 2022 (17H10) Aircraft accident reported at Rand Airport in Germiston this afternoon, 30 August 2022. Five casualties have been reported. The pilot has been transported to the hospital. The plane is a fixed-wing aircraft belonging to the South African Police Service. Authorities are on the scene to establish the cause of the accident.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 30 AUG 2022

  • MUDEN – 30 AUG 2022 (05H55) Protest reported on the R74 in the vicinity of Muden. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the R74 with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area to monitor the situation.
  • VRYHEID – 30 AUG 2022 (10H20) UPDATE Traffic has begun to move on the R34 Klipfontein towards Vryheid. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (08H00) Motorists are advised to avoid the R34 outside Vryheid as the protest action is still ongoing. Demonstrators started to barricade the road with burning tyres and debris. Local authorities are currently on the scene to monitor the situation. Updates to follow. (20H25) Protest reported on the R34 outside Vryheid approaching Melmoth near the Klipfontein Dam turnoff. Community members are protesting against poor service delivery being experienced in the area. The road has been closed to traffic. All services are on the scene.   • RICHARDS BAY – 30 AUG 2022 (11H00) Richards Bay Airport is expected to reopen on Monday, 19 September 2022. Flights will be resumed between Johannesburg and Richards Bay. This follows after the airport has been closed for 20 months due to COVID-19 restrictions that reduced travel demand. The airport had also failed to provide the necessary emergency services in accordance with the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) safety requirements, making it unable to accommodate scheduled passenger flights.

  • DURBAN – 30 AUG 2022 (13H20) The two senior officials in the KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s office and Mhlathuze Water are expected to make their first court appearance in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court today, 30 August 2022, together with four other accused. The Hawks arrested the six suspects on Monday, 29 August 2022, in connection with fraud and corruption involving R37 million at the water utility. It is alleged that an irregular process was followed to appoint service providers. The two senior officials are being charged with defeating the ends of justice and intimidation.

  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 30 AUG 2022 (12H10) Protest expected at the Department of Correctional Services on the corner of Grobler Street and Landdros Mare Street in Polokwane on Wednesday, 31 August 2022, from 13H00 by the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU). The demonstrators will be protesting for wage increases, collective bargaining matters and the high cost of living.   • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 30 AUG 2022 (15H00) UPDATE Residents of Seshego and Greenside settlements have dispersed at the Polokwane Municipal offices. The residents are demanding that their high-water bills be discarded and for uninterrupted electricity and water supply. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (10H40) Community members from Seshego and other extensions have arrived at the Polokwane Municipal offices to hand over the memorandum of demands. Officials from the municipality received and signed the memorandum on behalf of Mayor John Mpe. Residents gave the municipality seven days to respond, and failure to do so will result in a shutdown of the municipal offices. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are monitoring the situation. (04H40) Protest expected at the Polokwane Municipality building in central Polokwane today, 30 August 2022. Community members from Seshego, Lithuli Park and other extensions are expected to assemble at the Seshego Circle Centre from 05H00 and march to the municipal offices via Nelson Mandela Drive to hand over a Memorandum of Demands. The illegal demonstration aims to protest against the alleged billing of indigent households by the Polokwane Municipality. Seshego Community Against Crime and Gangsterism Chairperson Vincent Kunutu has stated that participants are expected to shut down all services during the demonstration. Motorists are advised to avoid affected areas during the protest. Authorities will be deployed to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 30 AUG 2022

  • MIDDELBURG – 30 AUG 2022 (10H30) Protest expected at the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court today, 30 August 2022. The accused, Nqubeko Mchunu from PPP Protection and Security, is appearing in court for a formal bail application. The accused is facing two charges of murder and two of attempted murder after allegedly opening fire on striking municipal workers at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality on 17 August 2022. Motorists are advised to avoid Walter Sisulu Street/ N11 and Dr Beyers Naude Street at the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court. A heightened Police presence is expected.

  • COLESBERG – 30 AUG 2022 (06H00) The Northern Cape Provincial Legislature (NCPL) is scheduled to host its Provincial Women’s Parliament in Colesberg between today, 30 August 2022 and Wednesday, 31 August 2022. Legislature Spokesperson Carmen Gopane has stated that the house sitting is expected to include discussions regarding foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in communities in Britstown, De Aar and Colesberg, as well as matters affecting women in the province, Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), and economic opportunities, among others. This follows after multiple points of order aimed at the Phala Phala farm burglary allegedly involving Ramaphosa, Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula requested the parliamentary protection services to escort certain EFF members out of the building. Ramaphosa will be addressing illegal immigration, the deployment of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) officers to the border and a parliamentary investigation into whether there is evidence he might have violated the constitution in connection with the Phala Phala farm burglary in 2020. (15H20) Security at the National Assembly has escorted Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Members of Parliament (MPs) out of the proceedings where President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to respond to queries from MPs. (06H00) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to respond to queries from Members of Parliament (MPs) in the National Assembly today, 30 August 2022. The Presidency has stated that MPs are expected to query President Ramaphosa on his plans to stabilise the country’s electricity network and the Government’s response to illegal migration. Ramaphosa is also expected to respond to allegations of money laundering, among others, in relation to the theft of a large amount of foreign currency at his Phala Phala farm in 2020. Presidency Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya has stated that Ramaphosa is also set to discuss the importance of the recent Presidential Social Sector Summit in ensuring that civil society is effective in addressing poverty and inequality. Magwenya has noted that Ramaphosa is expected to interact with MPs through a virtual platform as he will not be physically present in Parliament during the session.
  • CAPE TOWN – 30 AUG 2022 (17H30) Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie has called for a meeting with the Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa (PRASA), Transnet, and the South African Police Service (SAPS). This follows after a group of alleged gang members on the Cape Flats made death threats against workers who have been employed to rebuild the central line. Workers postponed operations on Monday, 29 August 2022, due to the threats. McKenzie stated that he held a consultation with the acting station commander and that extortion will not be tolerated.
