SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 19 SEP 2022

  • QONCE/ KING WILLIAM’S TOWN – 19 SEP 2022 (02H10) Eastern Cape Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mene has ordered the activation of a 72-hour mobilisation plan to locate and apprehend two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting of an iNgquza Hill Local Municipality Councillor. Preliminary reports indicate that two armed suspects reportedly shot and killed the Municipal Councillor and his son after invading their residence in Slovo Park, Lusikisiki, in the Eastern Cape on Saturday evening, 17 September 2022. Police Spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana has stated that the suspects fatally shot the Councillor’s son and severely injured the Councillor, who has since passed away in hospital. Kinana has noted that the names of the deceased are withheld until the next of kin are informed. Commissioner Lieutenant General Mene has stated that no arrests have been made as of yet and that the motive for the attack and the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 19 SEP 2022

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 18 SEP 2022 (20H45) Free State Police have launched an investigation into the recent death of an African National Congress (ANC) Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) in Bloemfontein. Provincial Police Spokesperson Thabo Covane has stated that authorities have opened an inquest docket at the Bayswater Police Station to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of ANC MPL Heinrich Smith, who recently passed on at a Bloemfontein guest house on Saturday, 17 September 2022. Smith has been the Chairperson of the Free State Legislature Committee for Education, Health and Social Services since 28 February 2022 and is also a member of an Ad Hoc Committee on Petitions. Covane has stated that Smith had been visiting the guesthouse to complete a project with a coworker. The Spokesperson has noted that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the MPL’s death are underway.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 19 SEP 2022

  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 18 SEP 2022 (21H00) Protest expected at the National Treasury of South Africa building in Pretoria Central on Monday, 19 September 2022. Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) members are expected to hold a march to call on Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana to take action regarding the unaccounted foreign currency located at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala Farm. Demonstrators are expected to gather at Burgers Park in Pretoria from 10H00 to march to the National Treasury of South Africa via Lilian Ngoyi Street and Madiba Street. Other routes expected to be affected during the march include Vissagie Street, Bosman Street, Paul Kruger Street, Nana Sita Street, Francis Baard Street, Pretorius Street and WF Nkomo Street. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling in the area and avoid areas affected by the demonstration. Demonstrators are expected to disburse from the National Treasury at 14H00. Tshwane Metro Police officers will be deployed to monitor the march and all affected streets.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 18 SEP 2022 (22H10) UPDATE City of Johannesburg teams have concluded recovery operations at the Industria Substation. Technicians are currently assessing the extent of damage to infrastructure at the substation to allow the commencement of repair works. Authorities have also launched an investigation into the nature of the failure and the cause of the fire. The power supply is expected to be restored on Monday, 19 September 2022. The City of Johannesburg Municipality will issue relevant updates to affected residents as the situation progresses. (19H15) Fire reported at the Industria Substation located on Albertina Sisulu Road in Johannesburg. The fire has led to service disruptions affecting residents in Riverlea, Lanlaagte, Industria, Bosmont and surrounding areas. The cause of the fire remains undetermined at this time. However, local reports indicate that the fire originated from a feeder board during a power interruption. Emergency services are on the scene.

  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 19 SEP 2022 (06H35) The Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) exhibition is expected to take place from Wednesday, 21 September 2022, until 25 September 2022 at the Waterkloof airbase. Reports indicate that local security companies who require funding for developing new equipment are expected to exhibit their products at the exhibition. Some of the equipment on show include air-to-air missile technology, unmanned aerial vehicles and anti-material weapons.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 19 SEP 2022 (07H30) Protest expected by staff members of the African National Congress (ANC) at the Luthuli House. The staff members noted that they are expected to also shut down the governing party’s offices across all provinces today, 19 September 2022. The reason for the protest is due to the non-payment of salaries for the past three months. Motorists are advised to avoid the area of Luthuli House and other Municipal buildings across the country. Local authorities have been notified and will be deployed to the affected areas.
  • BRAKPAN – 19 SEP 2022 (09H00) Protest reported in the locality of the Geluksdal informal settlement. Reports indicate that community members from Geluksdal barricaded several roads in and around Geluksdal with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest is due to poor service delivery in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the protests. Local authorities are currently on the scene to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 19 SEP 2022

  • LOUWSBURG – 18 SEP 2022 (20H20) Protest reported on the R69 in the vicinity of Louwsburg approaching the Magudu turnoff. Reports indicate that the road has been obstructed with rocks and debris. Truck operators are advised to avoid the N2/R69/R66 intersection between Pongola, Magudu and Louwsburg due to sporadic protest action. Motorists are also advised to use alternative routes when travelling through the area. Police have been dispatched to the scene.
  • PONGOLA – 18 SEP 2022 (23H30) Truck operators are advised to avoid travelling on the N2, R69 and R66 between Pongola, Magudu and Louwsburg due to the current deterioration of the security situation in the area. This follows recent sporadic protest action on the affected routes since Saturday, 17 September 2022. Truck drivers previously barricaded the N2 northwest of Pongola in protest against the employment of foreign nationals as truck operators. The demonstration also follows a recent heavy motor vehicle accident on the N2, during which 21 fatalities had been confirmed after a truck driver collided with a pickup truck. The R69 roadway in the vicinity of Louwsburg has also been obstructed with rocks and debris. Truck operators and motorists are advised to use alternative routes when travelling in the area. Authorities are monitoring the situation.
  • VRYHEID – 19 SEP 2022 (09H35) Protest reported on the R69 between Vryheid and Hlobane in the locality of Shoba. Reports indicate that the demonstrators barricaded the R69 with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest is due to poor service delivery in the area. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 19 SEP 2022

  • LEPHALALE/ ELLISRAS – 19 SEP 2022 (08H35) The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo announced that they have made the decision to temporarily suspend the membership of the Lephalale Local Municipality’s Mayor Alpheus Thulare for defying the party. The ANC stated that they made this decision during the Special Provincial Working Committee Meeting held yesterday, 18 September 2022. The ANC’s provincial spokesperson for Limpopo, Jimmy Machaka, further noted that Thulare has filed an interdict in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to prohibit the ANC from removing him as mayor and replacing him with Aaron Mokgehle. Machaka stated that the matter is expected to be heard in Court on Tuesday, 20 September 2022.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 19 SEP 2022

  • HAZYVIEW – 19 SEP 2022 (05H35) Protest reported on R536 near Hazyview in the locality of Shabalala informal settlement towards the Paul Kruger Gate. Reports indicate that demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest remains unknown, although previous demonstrations were related to service delivery issues. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. Police have been deployed to the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 19 SEP 2022

  • GANYESA – 19 SEP 2022 (07H00) Fire reported at the House of the Speaker at the Kagisano Malopo Local Municipality. Reports indicate that the fire occurred during the early hours of today, 19 September 2022. The cause of the fire is still unknown at this stage. No injuries have been reported during the fire. Emergency services are on the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the clean-up operation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 19 SEP 2022

  • GARIES – 18 SEP 2022 (21H30) Northern Cape Department of Education Member of Executive Council (MEC) Zolile Monakali and Head of Department (HoD) Sandile Beuzana are expected to conduct an oversight visit to the Garies High School on Monday, 19 September 2022. This follows after a fire had recently caused significant infrastructure damage at the school on Saturday, 17 September 2022. Provincial Education Spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe has stated that the fire destroyed an administration block, eleven classrooms and ablution blocks. MEC Zolile Monakali is expected to assess the extent of the damage to determine the necessary response mechanisms.

  • STRAND – 19 SEP 2022 (05H45) Protest reported at the Onverwacht Road and Gordon’s Bay Drive intersection. Reports indicate that the demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris between 18th Avenue and Jakes Gerwel Drive.
