SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 23 SEP 2022

  • GQEBERHA/ PORT ELIZABETH – 22 SEP 2022 (20H20) Police have launched a search for the suspects involved in the murder of a security officer who was fatally wounded following a shootout this morning, 22 September 2022, in Kwa Nobuhle. It is alleged that at approximately 09H00, two security officers were busy escorting a bread truck towards Gqabi Street, when they were approached by two unknown suspects. One of the suspects drew a firearm and started shooting at the security officers. A security officer returned fire and was fatally injured during the crossfire. The suspect also disarmed the security officer and fled the scene in an unknown vehicle. A case of murder and robbery aggravated will be investigated by the Provincial Organized Crime Investigation Unit.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 23 SEP 2022

  • HARRISMITH – 23 SEP 2022 (06H00) Eskom is expected to sign an agreement with the Harrismith Business Forum today, 23 September 2022. Forum Representative, Ben Denzel, stated that the agreement will initiate Eskom as the distribution agency for electricity in Harrismith. The forum, which consists of more than 200 businesses, has a court order against Eskom and the municipality, which serves as a legal enforcer of this agreement. The agreement had been resisted by the previous administration. However, for 8 months now there is a new administration which has approved the agreement. The final approval meeting will take place today. The municipality’s previous administration had challenges regarding this agreement as some residents and small businesses did not pay for electricity.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 23 SEP 2022 (07H00) The suspended African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General, Ace Magashule, is expected to appear in the Bloemfontein High Court today, 23 September 2022, for a pre-trial hearing. Magashule and 16 co-accused will appear in the High Court today linked to the R255 million failed asbestos project. Reports indicate that the accused have been charged with fraud, corruption and money laundering.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 23 SEP 2022

  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 23 SEP 2022 (06H00) Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele is expected to hold a briefing on the outcomes of the cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, 21 September 2022. The briefing will be held at the Ronnie Mamoepa Media Centre in Hatfield, Pretoria, from 08H00 today, 23 September 2022. The cabinet meeting held on Wednesday focused on the energy challenges that have disrupted the economic activities of businesses and inconvenienced households in the country.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 23 SEP 2022 (07H10) Protest expected by community members in Eldorado Park today, 23 September 2022. Reports indicate that the residents of Eldorado park are expected to embark on a planned protest against the area’s crime. This follows after they demanded that the mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Phalatse, address the issue and deploy additional security forces to assist the community in fighting crime in the area. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant when driving in the area of Eldorado Park. Local authorities have been notified and will be deployed to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 23 SEP 2022

  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 23 SEP 2022 (05H35) Protest reported on Prince Alfred Street. Reports indicate that the demonstrators barricaded Prince Alfred road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstration is also affecting Manor Road, Burger, Loop and East Street. The demonstrators are protesting due to electricity problems in the Jika Joe informal settlement. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the protest. Local authorities have been dispatched to the area.
  • MANDINI – 23 SEP 2022 (06H35) Protest reported on the R102 near the Total Energies Garage in Mandini. Reports indicate that the demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery-related issues in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Local authorities are currently on the scene to monitor the situation.
  • RICHMOND – 23 SEP 2022 (07H40) Protest reported on the R56 near Eskom Richmond CNC. Reports indicate that the demonstrators barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstrators are protesting due to the current power supply interruptions experienced. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the protest. Local authorities are currently on the scene to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 23 SEP 2022

  • BELA-BELA – 22 SEP 2022 (19H40) Limpopo Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs Basikopo Makamu has committed to writing to the Mayor of Bela Bela Local Municipality to respond to the matters raised by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in that municipality. This follows after the DA in Bela Bela, and community stakeholders handed over a memorandum and a petition to the MEC on Tuesday, 20 September 2022, in protest of poor service delivery and the daily electricity outages. The DA alleged that all nine wards of Bela Bela are affected by daily electricity outages, which are affecting water supply, businesses, farming activities, poor health facilities, and potholes, among others. Makamu stated that he intends to meet with community members to discuss the challenges faced in the district.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 23 SEP 2022

  • MBOMBELA/ NELSPRUIT – 23 SEP 2022 (09H05) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Mpumalanga announced that during the party’s third Provincial People’s Assembly (PPA), they had re-elected Collen Sedibe as the Provincial party leader. The EFF further noted that Rhulani Qhibi has been elected as deputy chairperson, Jackson Malatjie as provincial secretary, Ntsako Mkhabela as deputy secretary, and Nomaswazi Nkambule as provincial treasurer.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 23 SEP 2022

  • VRYBURG – 23 SEP 2022 (08H15) The South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued an adverse weather warning in various parts of the North West Province for today, 23 September 2022. The warning has been issued due to the Fire Danger Index (FDI) being above 75. SAWS noted that veld fires are expected to develop and spread at an increased rate. The affected areas include Schweizer Reneke, Vryburg and Bloemhof. SAWS has advised the fire services in the area to put fire teams and equipment on standby.

  • HONDEKLIP BAY – 23 SEP 2022 (07H30) The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, is expected to host a community engagement meeting on Saturday, 24 September 2022, at 10H00 at the Caravan Park, Hondeklip Bay. The meeting forms part of the ongoing engagements with fishing communities regarding the development of the Upstream Petroleum Industry.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 23 SEP 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 22 SEP 2022 (21H20) Explosion reported at the corner of Victoria Road/ M4 and Plein Street at a local takeaway restaurant in Woodstock. Victoria Road and Plein Street are closed to traffic. The cause of the explosion is unknown at this stage. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area. Emergency services have been dispatched to the scene.
  • CAPE TOWN – 23 SEP 2022 (06H00) Protest expected by Bellville community members at the Kasselsvlei Comprehensive High School today, 23 September 2022, from 07H15 until 08H15. Community members will be protesting against gender-based violence (GBV) after a Grade 9 pupil was attacked and sexually assaulted on her way to school on Monday, 12 September 2022. Motorists are advised to plan their routes accordingly. Local authorities have been notified and will be deployed to monitor the situation.
  • KRAAIFONTEIN – 23 SEP 2022 (08H45) Protest expected at the Kraaifontein Police station today, 23 September 2022. Reports indicate that residents of Kraaifontein are expected to embark on a planned protest action to deliver a list of grievances to the Police station. The residents are demanding the assistance of the local government to end unemployment and poverty in the area. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant when driving in the area.
