SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 01 APR 2022

  • GQEBERHA/ PORT ELIZABETH – 01 APR 2022 (03H00) The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) has raised concerns regarding the recent increase in the SARS-CoV-2 virus detected in wastewater in the Nelson Mandela Bay and Cape Town municipalities. The SAMRC Wastewater Surveillance and Research Programme (WSARP) conducts weekly wastewater sampling and analysis at approximately 80 sites across the country. Traces of the virus found at wastewater plants are not able to transmit to humans as it is not live but rather microscopic genetic material. SAMRC President Glenda Gray has stated that the recent increase follows several months of low concentrations of SARS-CoV-2. The analysis reportedly indicates a significant increase in SARS-CoV-2 concentrations in wastewater samples collected from sentinel towns in the Western Cape’s Breede Valley area and at the Cape Town International Airport.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 01 APR 2022 (11H30) Peaceful protest reported on Govan Mbeki Street. Parents and Educators of children with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are marching as part of the AutismMatters national march to the City Hall. The demonstrators are expected to deliver a memorandum of demand. The demonstrators have blockaded the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • QUEENSTOWN – 01 APR 2022 (12H30) The African National Congress (ANC) in the Chris Hani region is expected to hold its 8th Regional Conference today, 01 April 2022, from 14H00 at the Palloti Farm in the Enoch Mgijima Municipality. The ANC Provincial Convener, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, is expected to address the ANC members during the conference.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERTHA – 01 APR 2022 (14H10) Police have launched a search operation for two suspects involved in a targeted killing in Koliti Street, Ikamvelihle, on Thursday, 31 March 2022. The suspects opened fire on a vehicle with three passengers. Two passengers have been killed during the incident, and the third passenger has been injured. The suspects fled the scene after the shooting. The reason for the killing is unknown at this stage. The Police have opened murder and attempted murder cases at the Ikamvelihle Police Station. The investigation is being led by the Eastern Cape Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Unit (POCI).

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 01 APR 2022

  • ALLANRIDGE – 01 APR 2022 (09H25) Road closure reported on the R30 in Allanridge towards Bothaville due to recent motor vehicle accidents related to flooding. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Emergency services are monitoring the area.
  • WINBURG – 01 APR 2022 (14H45) Protest reported on the N1 and N5 intersection in Winburg. The off-ramps are closed to traffic. Demonstrators are throwing stones at passing vehicles. Residents are protesting due to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 01 APR 2022

  • JOHANNESBURG – 01 APR 2022 (11H00) UPDATE Dlamini has chosen to pay an R200,000 fine as a form of sentencing. Dlamini will pay R20,000 today, 01 April 2022 and the remaining R80,000 before Friday, 29 April 2022. The other R100,000 has been suspended for five years. ANC members are demonstrating outside the court in support of Dlamini. (10H40) The Magistrate Court has sentenced Bathabile Dlamini to four years imprisonment or pay an R200,000 fine. The court stated that should Dlamini choose four years imprisonment, two years will be suspended. (06H20)  The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) President, Bathabile Dlamini, is scheduled to appear before the Johannesburg Central Magistrates Court today, 01 April 2022, at 08H30, for her perjury case. The case relates to her statement at an inquiry established by the Constitutional Court during her role in the 2017 social grant at the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). Demonstrations are expected to occur outside the court in solidarity with Dlamini. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 01 APR 2022 (15H10) Road closure reported on Smith Street in Braamfontein. Traffic delays have been reported in the area. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
  • MIDRAND – 01 APR 2022 (15H20) UPDATE Mbalula stated that the Department is working with provinces to ensure that they increase the capacity to respond to the influx of applications. This follows after a grace period for renewal of expired learner’s licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits ended on Thursday, 31 March 2022. Working hours at all traffic stations have been increased to ensure that the backlog caused by the implementation of the national state of disaster is addressed.  (05H35) The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, is expected to provide an update on the deadline for the extension of licence validity today, 01 April 2022 at 09H00 at the Licensing Department offices in Vorna Valley. This follows after the Department of Transport announced the extension of learner’s licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licences and professional driving permits until 31 March 2022, as part of Government measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
  • ENNERDALE – 01 APR 2022 (15H45) The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) held an illegal land invasion operation in Lakeview informal settlement at Ennerdale. Officials removed unoccupied structures. Possible unrest is expected by residents. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
  • SANDTON – 01 APR 2022 (16H30) UPDATE President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that due to budget constraints in the Crime Intelligence division, Police did not have enough resources to properly respond to the July 2021 unrest. Ramaphosa has acknowledged that due to lack of resources, it was difficult for Police stations to deploy sufficiently and well-trained officers to contain the situation. However, the President stated that the Government will capacitate the Police and put more funding into the force to address the shortage of resources. (06H30) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to appear before the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) today, 01 April 2022. The hearing will take place at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sandton at 09H00. President Ramaphosa will give evidence at the National Investigative Hearing into the July 2021 unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. The Commission launched the investigative hearings to exercise its constitutional and statutory mandate related to the causes of the unrest and its impact on human rights.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 01 APR 2022

  • UMZIMKULU – 01 APR 2022 (06H00) The Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele and the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, are expected to undertake a two-day District Development Model (DDM) visit to the Harry Gwala District Municipality from Saturday, 02 April 2022 until 03 April 2022. During the visit, the Ministers, accompanied by Members of the Executive Council (MECs), the Executive Mayor of the District and Local Mayors, will assess progress on construction projects linked to the District One Plan. These include the Community Residential Units in Ixobho and Kokstad, Umzimkhulu Stadium in Umzimkhulu, Bulwer Dam in Bulwer, Singisi Power Station and N2/R56 Interchange in Kokstad.
  • RICHARDS BAY – 01 APR 2022 (08H20) The Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordan, is expected to oversee the historic conclusion of the land claim agreement in Richards Bay for future port expansion and provide an update on third party rail slots between Transnet and the Isizwe sase Mandlanzini Trust today, 01 Friday, 2022 at the Action Cricket Hall, Tuzi Gazi Waterfront from 09H00. The agreement is expected to pave the way for expanding the Port of Richards Bay. The Government has prioritised massive investment in the port system across the country to improve efficiency by upgrading and developing port infrastructure.
  • VAN REENEN – 01 APR 2022 (15H00) Road closure reported on the N3 at Van Reenen Pass. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene. Recovery is in progress.

  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 01 APR 2022 (16H00) The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) held its provincial elective conference in Polokwane this week. SANTACO elected a new leadership that will manage the organisation for the next four years. The former Secretary of SANTACO stated that there is a need for the taxi council to strengthen its stakeholder relations and partnership with business entities.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 01 APR 2022

  • MALELANE – 01 APR 2022 (06H05) Peaceful protest expected by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at Ruperts Farm on Wednesday, 06 April 2022. EFF members and supporters are expected to conduct the party’s Land Day Picket at Rupert Farms in Malelane. The demonstrators are expected to gather at the Malelane Gate RCL Foods Procurement from 09H00 before marching to Ruperts Farms. Motorists are advised to avoid the area during the protest and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • BELFAST – 01 APR 2022 (09H00) Protest reported on the R540 in Belfast towards Dullstroom. The demonstrators are blocking Trucks and business vehicles from driving through the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • EMALAHLENI /WITBANK – 01 APR 2022 (09H10) UPDATE The ANC Provincial Task Team (PTT) coordinator, Lindiwe Ntshalintshali, has addressed the ANC members. Ntshalintshali stated that corrections will be made to the delegate list for the ANC provincial conference. (08H50) Clashes reported at the Emalahleni City Hall between security officers and African National Congress (ANC) members. The ANC members demand access to the registration venue ahead of the ANC Provincial Conference. Members of the public are advised to be vigilant. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 01 APR 2022

  • KRAAIPAN – 01 APR 2022 (16H20) The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) held an oversight visit at the collapsed Kraaipan Bridge in the Ratlou Local Municipality area today, 01 April 2022. The NCOP delegation expressed their disappointment at the state of the bridge, which collapsed due to seasonal rains in the province in January 2022. The collapsed bridge affects about a thousand households in the area. This has an impact on essential services, such as health, school, and shopping. The Department is conducting an assessment of all bridges in the province following the unexpected collapse of this bridge.
  • BRITS – 01 APR 2022 (17H25) Road closure reported on the N4 between the R511 and Brits Toll Plaza. The road is closed due to a motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Recovery is in progress.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 01 APR 2022

  • UPINGTON – 01 APR 2022 (08H00) A suspect is expected to appear at the Upington Magistrate Court today, 01 April 2022, on charges of fraud. The suspect was arrested after investigations and a search conducted at the Upington casino hotel, where he used R80, 000 using details of three different bank accounts.
  • KIMBERLEY – 01 APR 2022 (17H40) The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called for the Northern Cape Department of Health to be placed under administration. DA Provincial Health Spokesperson Izak Fritz stated that there are concerns about the well-being of around 70% of the province’s residents who are reliant on state health facilities. Fritz is requesting an oversight inspection at all state healthcare facilities.
  • KIMBERLEY – 01 APR 2022 (18H10) Sol Plaatje Municipality has proposed an electricity tariff hike of 6,82%. This is along with water increases of 5,68%, while property tax, refuse, and sanitation is expected to rise by 4% for the 2022/23 financial year. Public participation processes will have to be held before any final decision is taken. The municipality has warned that anyone, including businesses, government departments, and households with outstanding accounts exceeding 90 days will have their electricity supply cut regardless of the amount owed. The municipality owes Eskom R540,9- million while it was noted that there was non-payment of accounts

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 01 APR 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 01 APR 2022 (00H10) Peaceful protest expected by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) at Ruperts Farm in Stellenbosch on Wednesday, 06 April 2022. EFF Cape Winelands members and supporters are expected to conduct the party’s Land Day Picket at Rupert Farms in Stellenbosch, Cape Town. Participants are expected to gather at the corner of Simmons Street and Koelenhof Road from 09H00 before marching to Ruperts Farms. Motorists are advised that ground travel disruptions are expected during the march. Authorities are expected to be deployed to the area to monitor the demonstration.
  • CAPE TOWN – 01 APR 2022 (12H10) Peaceful protest reported on Adderley Street and various streets in the Central Business District (CBD). The demonstrators are marching on Adderley Street. The reason for the march is unknown at this stage. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.
