• PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 02 JUN 2022 (09H20) UPDATE A bus and two vehicles have been set alight during demonstrations. Police have dispersed the demonstrations. The situation remains volatile. SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 02 JUN 2022
• WELKOM – 02 JUN 2022 (07H10) The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, is expected to meet with the Executive Mayor of Matjhabeng Municipality, Thanduxolo Khalipha, Members of the Mayoral Committee and Councillors, the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and MEC for Human Settlements today, 02 June 2022, at the Matjhabeng Municipal offices from 09H00 until 15H00. The Minister is expected to follow up on commitments made on the water and sanitation issues within the Matjhabeng Municipality.
• ALLANRIDGE – 02 JUN 2022 (15H30) Road closure reported on the R30 between Bothaville to Welkom near Allanridge. The road is closed until further notice. Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela announced that about 1 kilometre (km) of the R30 will be closed to construct a bridge. This follows after several fatal motor vehicle accidents on the road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

• KATLEHONG – 02 JUN 2022 (04H10) Explosion reported at a BP garage in Stand, Katlehong area. Reports indicate that an unknown armed group bombed the ABSA and Nedbank automated teller machines (ATM). The group left the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. The registration of the vehicle remains unknown.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 02 JUN 2022 (11H00) Protest expected by members affiliated with the Congress of the South African Trade Union (COSATU), South African Communist Party (SACP), African National Congress (ANC) and Africa for Palestine are expected to protest on Friday, 03 June 2022, at the Israel Embassy from 10H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest in solidarity with the Palestinians. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• ENNERDALE – 02 JUN 2022 (11H20) Protest reported at the intersection of the R588 and Phillips Avenue. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery and the failure of the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Housing to meet with residents following a scheduled meeting. • JOHANNESBURG – 02 JUN 2022 (12H25) Protest reported outside the Johannesburg High Court in Pritchard Street between Vol Welligh Street and Eloff Street. The demonstration follows amid the ongoing civil case between Marikana mine workers and Sibanye Stillwater. Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and Marikana employees are protesting outside the court to demand compensation. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes due to ongoing ground travel disruptions in the court’s vicinity. Authorities are on the scene.
• RANDBURG – 02 JUN 2022 (13H10) The Commander in Chief (CIC) of the Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF), Julius Malema, is expected to appear at the Randburg Magistrate Court on Friday, 03 June 2022, from 09H00. Malema is expected to appear at the court for the hearing on the matter of the Policeman, who in 2018, allegedly denied Malema entry into the final resting place of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 02 JUN 2022 (13H45) The Presidency has responded to the claims made by former State Security Agency (SSA) Director-General Arthur Fraser on Wednesday, 01 June 2022, against President Cyril Ramaphosa. President Ramaphosa stated that there is no basis for the claims of criminal conduct that have been made against him by Fraser. The Presidency has confirmed that a robbery took place at the President’s farm in Limpopo on 09 February 2022, in which proceeds from the sale of game were stolen. The President was attending an African Union Summit in Addis Ababa when the incident occurred. Presidents Ramaphosa reported the incident to the head of the Presidential Protection Unit of the South African Police Service for investigation. President Ramaphosa stated that he will cooperate with any law enforcement investigation of these matters.
• NIGEL – 02 JUN 2022 (14H30) Eskom announced that efforts to rebuild the Gravett substation, which has been vandalised, are underway. Technicians are working to accelerate the rebuilding process. The estimated time to restore supply to the affected customers is Sunday, 05 June 2022. The substation was severely damaged on Sunday, 28 May 2022, leaving small business customers in Driemanskap, Glenroy Farms, Rooikraal and Suikerbosrand without electricity.
• TEMBISA – 02 JUN 2022 (16H00) Eskom, in partnership with Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and South African Police Service (SAPS), removed illegal connections and bypassed meters in Tswelopele. This is part of operations to prevent the network from overloading and mini-substations failures and explosions.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 02 JUN 2022 (16H40) The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) are expected to hold a meeting with mineworkers at the Union Buildings on Friday, 03 June 2022, from 09H00. The unions are expected to discuss developments in the Sibanye Stillwater strike. Mineworkers have been protesting for salary increases.

• MABHOKWENI – 02 JUN 2022 (06H00) Protest reported on the R66 between Eshowe and KwaGingindlovu. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. • TONGAAT – 02 JUN 2022 (07H50) The Executive Mayor of eThekwini Municipality, Mxolisi Kaunda, is expected to visit Tongaat today, 02 June 2022, to discuss rebuilding efforts with the community. This follows after the residents held a protest on Wednesday, 01 June 2022, due to poor service delivery related to water outages.
• MKUZE – 02 JUN 2022 (11H20) Shooting reported at an undisclosed location within the town of Mkuze, northern KwaZulu-Natal. Reports indicate that an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Councillor in the Umkhanyakude District Municipality has sustained fatal injuries during a shooting incident. The circumstances surrounding the situation remain undetermined at this time. The Councillor’s name is currently being withheld pending further procedures. Police are expected to launch an investigation into the incident.
• NTEMBENI – 02 JUN 2022 (15H20) Supporters of former President Jacob Zuma have gathered at Nkandla homestead for a prayer meeting. The supporters are requesting that African National Congress (ANC) leadership support Zuma in his court case. Zuma is currently facing corruption charges in connection with his alleged role in the arms deal contract. This follows after the court found that Zuma’s September 2021 release from prison on medical parole was irregular. The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) is expected to hear Zuma’s appeal against a ruling on his release on medical parole in August 2022.

• HOEDSPRUIT – 02 JUN 2022 (08H30) The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Maruleng announced that it will submit a motion in the next council sitting to request to convene a debate on the failure to permanently appoint senior managers or fill some senior management vacancies in the Maruleng Municipality. DA Councillor in Maruleng Local Municipality, Portia Moropane, stated that the inability to appoint permanent senior management has led to instability in the running of the municipality. Moropane added that the failure to fill vacancies in key municipality departments has resulted in the loss of technical skills and has seen service delivery and the municipality’s finances negatively affected.
