  • EAST LONDON – 02 MAR 2022 (06H10) Protest reported on Oxford Street. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 02 MAR 2022 (15H00) UPDATE Firefighters have contained the fire on Old Cape Road at a Power Station near St Albans Prison. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (12H50) Fire reported on Old Cape Road at a Power Station near St Albans Prison. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Emergency services have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 02 MAR 2022

  • SASOLBURG – 02 MAR 2022 (06H50) The Metsimaholo Local Municipality has announced a planned power outage today, 02 March 2022, from 08H00 until 19H00. The power interruption will be conducted to prevent further damage to the transformer due to the cable theft incident that recently happened. The Municipality stated that updates will be provided to the public as the situation progresses.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 02 MAR 2022 (10H25) Protest reported on the M30 between Motheo TVET College and the University of Free State. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 02 MAR 2022 (12H20) UPDATE Police have dispersed demonstrations. The demonstrators protested to demand the removal of the ward councillor and the re-election of the new councillor. Seven protestors have been arrested and are expected to appear at the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Friday, 04 March 2022.  (06H40) Protest reported between the N1 and Dewetsdorp Road. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • ALLANRIDGE – 02 MAR 2022 (14H15) Road closure reported on the R30 between Allanridge and Bothaville. The road is closed due to road maintenance. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
  • WELKOM – 02 MAR 2022 (16H20) Protest reported at the Nkoane Road by Oppenheimer Park in Thabong. Community members are protesting due to the Matjhabeng municipality that turned off the water and are removing meters. Demonstrators are barricading the roads with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 02 MAR 2022

  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 02 MAR 2022 (06H00) Protest expected by the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) on Wednesday, 02 March 2022, from 10H00 at the United States of America (USA) Embassy. NEHAWU is expected to lead an international campaign against the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) aggression. The campaign is against the anti-Russia provocations of NATO in Ukraine and in support of the people of Latin America, specifically in Venezuela, Brazil and Cuba, and against the USA Government for promoting and interfering in conflicts and aggression in these countries. It is also a campaign for the democratisation of eSwatini, against the killing, imprisonment and oppression of eSwatini nationals by the Tinkundla regime.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 02 MAR 2022 (06H10) Protest expected by the members of the United Eswatini Diaspora today, 02 March 2022, at the Eswatini Embassy. The demonstrators are expected to gather at the United States of America (USA) Embassy and march to the Eswatini Embassy. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand the end of the Tinkundla System. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • ALBERTON – 02 MAR 2022 (10H20) Protest reported on Combrinck Street in the vicinity of DSV Distributions. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 02 MAR 2022 (11H20) The Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe, is expected to brief the media on the update on the report of the State Capture Commission today, 02 March 2022, from 16H00.
  • GERMISTON – 02 MAR 2022 (14H10) Road closure reported on the N3 at the Kloof Road intersection in Bedfordview. The road is closed due to a motor vehicle accident. Heavy traffic delays are reported between the Geldenhuys interchange and the Gillooly’s interchange. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene. Recovery is in progress.
  • GERMISTON – 02 MAR 2022 (18H00) Siemens Energy AG announced the suspension of all new business operations in Russia and international deliveries to Russia. This is in response to country’s invasion of Ukraine.
  • ROODEPOORT – 02 MAR 2022 (17H00) Clover has condemned the acts of violence affecting their staff and operations during the industrial strike actions. Communications between Clover and Trade unions are being facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) to resolve the strike action. Clover has reported approximately 200 acts of violence which include two murder charges, three attempted murder charges, 109 cases of malicious damage to property, seven attacks made on staff members’ residences, 12 assault charges, 40 intimidation cases, 15 cases of invasion of retail premises in addition to a robbery case. Clover Spokesperson Steven Velthuysen reported that 16 of the suspects had been identified in addition to four arrests. Velthuysen has stated that weekly meetings are being held with Police to receive progress reports. Furthermore, Clover has stated that internal disciplinary actions are being conducted towards the appropriate employees.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 02 MAR 2022

  • UMLAZI – 02 MAR 2022 (06H15) Protest reported on Mangosuthu Highway/M30 in the vicinity of Comtech Park. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • KWAGINGINDLOVU – 02 MAR 2022 (08H30) Protest reported on the R102 between KwaGingindlovu and Mtunzini. The demonstrators are protesting due to service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
  • DURBAN – 02 MAR 2022 (08H50) Shooting reported on Grey Street. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • DURBAN – 02 MAR 2022 (11H40) Police have announced that three people have been injured following a helicopter crash at the Virginia Airport. The cause of the crash is unknown at this stage. The Civil Aviation Authority will investigate the incident.
  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 02 MAR 2022 (14H30) Parade reported outside the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court by the Zulu regiments loyal to King Misuzulu. The AmaZulu royal family is celebrating their court victory against Queen Sibongile Dlamini-Zulu, Princess Ntandoyenkosi and Ntombizosuthu Zulu-Duma and Prince Mbonisi. Motorists are advised to avoid the M70 and surrounding areas.
  • DURBAN – 02 MAR 2022 (18H20) UPDATE The N2 towards Higginson Highway/M1 has been reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. This follows after several security companies and the Police responded to information about six armed suspects travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz. A chase ensued between the suspects and officers. The suspects crashed into a truck on the Higginson Highway. The suspects got out of the vehicle and opened fire. Four suspects have been shot and killed. One suspect has been injured. The Police have launched a search operation for the remaining suspect.  (14H40) Four people have been shot and killed on the Higginson Highway bridge over the N2, near Chatsworth. The area is an active crime scene. Police are investigating the matter.  (13H15) Road closure reported on the N2 towards Higginson Highway/M1.  (12H30) Shooting reported on the Higginson Highway/M1. SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 02 MAR 2022

  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 02 MAR 2022 (16H30) The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) has called for people to be permanently employed by the Limpopo Department of Health. This follows after community members have raised concerns about an advertisement showing Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers in the Department will receive an R3,000 monthly salary. DENOSA Provincial Chairperson Lesiba Monyaki stated that R3,000 is not enough to cover employees living costs. Monyaki is proposing that EPWP workers be paid a basic salary as they are rendering essential healthcare services. DENOSA called on the Provincial Health Department and the Limpopo Provincial Government to discuss solutions around the contractual work of EPWP workers.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 02 MAR 2022

  • MIDDELBURG – 02 MAR 2022 (13H45) The new residents forum, known as Dis Nou Genoeg, is expected to apply for an interdict at the Middelburg High Court on Tuesday, 08 March 2022, against the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, resigned Municipal Manager Bheki Khenisa and striking employees. The group will be interdicting the municipality to restore municipal administrative services to the residents of Middelburg. The group will also raise concerns regarding infrastructure damage caused by the strike and a sewer leak that is affecting a local pre-school.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 02 MAR 2022

  • POTCHEFSTROOM – 02 MAR 2022 (09H15) The Regional Court has postponed the case of the former Executive Mayor of JB Marks Local Municipality, Khotso Khumalo and two co-accused, to Thursday, 07 April 2022, for trial. The trio faces eight charges of theft and fraud from the Municipality funds.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 02 MAR 2022

  • KIMBERLEY – 02 MAR 2022 (08H05) The Sol Plaatje University has announced that students will face a disciplinary hearing following a protest that lead to the disruption of classes and the halt of construction work on the South Campus. The senior manager in the vice-chancellor’s office, Kashini Maistry, stated that Student Representative Council (SRC) had requested that the vice-chancellor and principal on Monday, 28 February 2022 receive a memorandum of demands. Maistry added that after the memorandum was accepted, the students continued with the protest however, it was not peaceful.
  • KIMBERLEY – 02 MAR 2022 (12H00) Protest expected by the Sol Plaatje Community Forum members on Thursday, 03 March 2022 from 16H30 at the Galeshewe Police Station. The members are expected to gather at Nobengula Street and march to the Police Station. The demonstrators are expected to protest against the high crime rate related to drugs and demand the Premier request that Parliament amends the Constitution to allow for stricter laws and law enforcement. The demonstrators are also expected to hand over a memorandum of demands. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • PETRUSTVILLE – 02 MAR 2022 (15H30) The Nothern Cape Provincial Government announced that it has reached an agreement with Eskom. The employees of Renosterberg Municipality will receive their salaries soon. This follows after the municipality’s account has been frozen by Eskom due to non-payment. The employees have been protesting on the R48 between Petrustville and Van Der Kloof. A

  • CAPE TOWN – 02 MAR 2022 (14H00) UPDATE Demonstrators have dispersed on Lower Long Street. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant.  (06H05) Protest expected by the members of The Green Connection today, 02 March 2022 from 12H00 on Lower Long Street. The demonstrators are expected to protest against the seismic surveys on the West Coast. The demonstrators are expected to disperse from 14H00.   • CAPE TOWN – 02 MAR 2022 (14H10) UPDATE Demonstrators have gathered outside the St George’s Cathedral for a silent protest. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.  (12H15) Peaceful protest expected at the St George’s Cathedral today 02 March 2022 from 14H10. The demonstrators led by the Anglican Dean of Cape Town, Michael Weeder, are expected to hold a silent protest in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. The demonstration is expected to disperse from 15H10. Members of the public are advised to be vigilant. Police will monitor the protest.
  • STELLENBOSCH – 02 MAR 2022 (14H45) Peaceful protest reported at Stellenbosch University. Students are protesting for the Russian and Ukraine conflict to end. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are aware of the situation.
  • CAPE TOWN – 02 MAR 2022 (15H20) Protest reported at the Northlink College’s Protea campus in Bellville. Students have been demanding that their National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances be paid. Students have been disrupting classes and blocking entrances at the campus since Monday, 01 March 2022. The students stated that they will continue to boycott classes until their funds are paid. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.
  • CAPE TOWN – 02 MAR 2022 (16H45) President Cyril Ramaphosa is virtually delivering the keynote address to the opening session of the sixth South African Local Government Association (SALGA) National Conference today, 02 March 2022. The conference is held from today until Friday, 04 March 2022, at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The conference is held under the theme, Consolidating the role of local government in rebuilding local communities to meet their social, economic and material needs.
