SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 04 MAR 2022

  • EAST LONDON – 04 MAR 2022 (08H45) The trial of Economic Freedom Fighter, leader Julius Malema and co-accused Adriaan Snyman is expected to continue today, 04 March 2022, at the East London Magistrate Court. Malema and Snyman face charges of illegal possession of a firearm, contravention of the Firearms Control Act, the illegal possession of ammunition and reckless endangerment to persons or property.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 04 MAR 2022 (09H30) Protest reported at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) South Campus. Students are protesting to demand an extension of registrations. The demonstrators have barricaded with burning tyres and debris. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • BISHO – 04 MAR 2022 (11H40) The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance, Mlungisi Mvoko, is expected to table out the Provincial Budget Speech on Tuesday, 08 March 2022, from 14H15 at the Provincial Legislature.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 04 MAR 2022

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 04 MAR 2022 (11H25) Premier Sisi Ntomebela has announced that the Department of Health has successfully revamped nine healthcare facilities across the province at a total of R47,593 million. The newly revamped healthcare facilities will assist in h decreasing the rate of unemployment in the province. The revamped healthcare facilities are Bophelong Clinic in Odendaalsrus, Seadimo Clinic in Thaba Nchu, Relebohile Clinic in Heilbron, Boitumelo Clinic in Senekal, Opkoms Clinic in Bloemfontein, Parys Clinic, Frankfort Hospital, and Fezi Ngumbomombi Nurses. Ntombela added that Pelonomi’s maternity ward construction will be completed by the end of the 2023/24 financial year.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 04 MAR 2022 (14H00) The Free State High Court has postponed the murder trial of Bloemfontein businessman Louis Siemens to Friday, 18 March 2022. Judge Pitso Molitsoane has been expected to deliver the judgment today, 04 March 2022, where eight accused including the alleged murderer, Stanley Bakili, two Police officials, and a disbarred Advocate, are standing trial. Judge Molitsoane told the court that he is still working on the ruling. Siemens has been shot and killed in the Preller Square basement parking lot in May 2018. Ten suspects have been arrested for allegedly having direct and indirect roles in orchestrating and carrying out the murder. Eight of the accused are standing trial, while the others have turned into state witnesses.
  • VIRGINIA – 04 MAR 2022 (15H00) Flooding reported on the R73 between Virginia and Ventersburg. The flooding is caused by heavy rain. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
  • VENTERSBURG – 04 MAR 2022 (17H45) UPDATE The N1 in Ventersburg towards Kroonstad has been re-opened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant.  (12H45) Road closure reported on the N1 in Ventersburg towards Kroonstad due to a motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and alternative routes. Emergency services have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 04 MAR 2022

  • JOHANNESBURG – 04 MAR 2022 (03H30) National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) Spokesperson Livhuwani Mmamburu has announced that union members have rejected an offer of R700 wage increase per year for three years by Sibanye-Stillwater. The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and NUM members are demanding an R1,000 increase per year for three years. This follows after the involved parties failed to reach an agreement at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). Mmamburu has further stated that 79% of NUM members have voted in favour of the launch of industrial action in protest against the offer. AMCU Treasurer-General Jimmy Gama has urged Sibanye to review the offer to avoid industrial action. Sibanye Gold operations include the Driefontein, Kloof, Cook, and Beatrix mines.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 04 MAR 2022 (06H00) South African Airways (SAA) announced that it will resume flights to Durban with three daily return flights today, 04 March 2022. SAA will make it easier for customers from across its growing Africa network to reach Durban on a single SAA ticket and easier for Durbanites to conveniently connect on SAA to Accra, Harare, Kinshasa, Lagos, Lusaka and Mauritius services.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 04 MAR 2022 (06H05)  The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is expected to hold an EFF Red Friday and 1-Million Member Recruitment Drive at Atteridgeville Community Hall today, 04 March 2022, at 11H00. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the event.
  • HAMMANSKRAAL – 04 MAR 2022 (12H00) The African National Congress (ANC) in Hammanskraal is expected to hold a rally on Friday, 04 March 2022, from 12H00 at the Jubilee Mall. The rally is expected to be addressed by the former ANC Youth League (ANCYL) Chairperson and Secretary, Lebogang Maile.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 04 MAR 2022 (16H00) National industrial strike expected by e-hailing operators on Tuesday, 22 March 2022 until Thursday, 24 March 2022. Demonstrators will be protesting against low fares, rising fuel prices, data costs, vehicle maintenance, robberies and a high commission structure, alleged harassment by road traffic officials and minibus taxi drivers. In Nelson Mandela Bay, e-hailing drivers stated that they would participate in the shutdown. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the strike.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 04 MAR 2022

  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 04 MAR 2022 (16H20) Students have been protesting at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). About 250 first-year students have been sleeping outside the UKZN Pietermaritzburg campus on the tarmac outside the security gates. The students stated that the university has failed to provide them with accommodation. UKZN Student Representative Council President Malusi Zuma stated that negotiations with the university management had yielded no positive results on campus. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) student command secretary Akhona Jali called for Student Housing Managers to fast-track a process of negotiations with private accommodation landlords so the impasse could be resolved.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 04 MAR 2022

  • POLOKWANE/PIETERSBURG – 04 MAR 2022 (10H30) Premier Stan Mathabatha has announced that the Provincial Government and the Ministry of Water and Sanitation has adopted a provincial water plan that will be implemented under the stewardship of the premier’s office. Mathabatha stated that the plan will be used as a blueprint to unlock all the province’s water challenges, including the Giyani water project. Mathabatha added that the province has also adopted the Limpopo Water Master & Spatial Development Framework to provide medium & long-term development trajectory on the provisioning of water networks for industrialisation poverty reduction & to redress the existing levels of inequality.

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 04 MAR 2022

  • BARBERTON – 04 MAR 2022 (08H20) The City of Mbombela has announced a planned power outage expected on Sunday, 06 March 2022, in Barberton from 08H00 until 18H00. The electricity will be interrupted to allow Eskom to conduct maintenance on their 22 000-volt equipment at various substations. The following areas are expected to be affected include Barberton Ext. 1, 2, 3, 4,5, the Central Business District (CBD), Kamadakwa, Umjindi trust, Umjindi Ext. 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18. Eskom has stated that updates will be provided to the public as the situation progresses.
  • WITBANK/EMALAHLENI – 04 Mar 2022 (18H10) Demonstrators have dispersed on Ferrobank/N4 off-ramp and Schonland Drive. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police are monitoring the situation.  (09H15) Protest reported on Ferrobank/N4 off-ramp and Schonland Drive. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 04 MAR 2022

  • KLERKSDORP – 04 MAR 2022 (16H45) The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in North West, Major Patrick Mbotho, welcomed the sentence handed down to Phakiso Radipudi. The accused has received 12 years and six months direct imprisonment for possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of ammunition and for being in the country illegally. Radipudi, a Lesotho national, was arrested on 12 February 2021 by the Illicit Mining Task team during a routine patrol at Dawkinsville dumping site in Klerksdorp. The accused fled when he spotted the Police. The accused has been apprehended, and three 9mm pistols and fifty-four rounds of cartridges have been found at his residence.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 04 MAR 2022

  • HARTSWATER – 04 MAR 2022 (14H45) A court judgment that found a meeting to appoint acting Municipal Manager Mpho Mojaki invalid has hindered attempts to take legal action against officials at Phokwane Municipality. This follows after the municipality paid R1.59-million to a contractor in October 2021 for mechanical repairs, electrical pump cable joints and installation, PVC pipes testing pressure flow and hiring of an excavator tipper truck. However, complaints have been made regarding wastewater that has been flowing in residential sites in Pampierstad and flowing down the Kolong River. Investigations revealed that none of the work had been completed. The Technical Department indicated that two main pumps did not have enough power to pump through the waste. The acting term of the Municipal Manager had ended on 28 February 2022, thereby preventing him from taking any steps against wrongdoing.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 04 MAR 2022

  • GEORGE – 04 MAR 2022 (12H40) The George Municipality has announced that a planned power outage is expected on Tuesday, 08 March 2022, from 09H00 until 16H30 in Loeriepark. The electricity will be interrupted to allow technicians to do alterations to the electrical mains. The following areas are expected to be affected include Akasia Streets, Mann Streets, de Mist Streets, Mimosa Streets, Boekenhout Streets, Janssen Streets, Fifth Streets and Park Streets. Eskom has stated that updates will be provided to the public as the situation progresses.
  • CAPE TOWN – 04 MAR 2022 (15H00) Bomb threat reported at the Stadium On Main shopping centre in Claremont. The roads around the shopping centre are closed to traffic. The shopping centre has been evacuated. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. The bomb unit and emergency services are on the scene.
