  • PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 07 FEB 2022 (05H45) The South African Democratic Teachers Union’s (SADTUs) Eastern Cape Chairperson Tabile Kunene has been elected as the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) Eastern Cape Provincial Chairperson.



  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 07 FEB 2022 (06H10) The Free State Co-operative Governance Department has filed an urgent High Court application to annul several decisions taken by the Mangaung Metropolitan Council. The Government has submitted court papers stating that the special council meeting has not been lawfully convened and that Speaker, Stefani Lockman-Naidoo, did not convene the meeting on her own accord. Instead, the meeting has been convened at the direction of two African National Congress (ANC) councillors and 17 Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) caucus members. The disputed meeting led to the removal of Acting Municipal Manager, Sello More, who has been replaced by Teboho Maine.



  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 07 FEB 2022 (00H10) The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced the closure of a section of the N1 Southbound in Centurion. The scheduled road closure follows increased rainfall in January 2022 and forms part of efforts to rehabilitate a sinkhole and allow traffic to return to normal. The measure is required to enable gravity survey testing to be conducted on the highway. The surveys are expected to assist SANRAL in completing the design of remedial works for the sinkhole’s rehabilitation. The N1 Southbound between the Flying Saucer Interchange and Botha Avenue on the N1 has been closed as of 23H00 on Sunday, 06 February 2022, and is expected to reopen to motorists as at 04H00 on Monday, 07 February 2022. SANRAL has requested motorists to consider alternative routes and exercise caution when utilising the road.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (00H20) Eskom has announced the suspension of loadshedding with effect from 21H00 on Sunday, 06 February 2022. The power utility has stated that the suspension follows due to sufficient recovery of electricity generation capacity across the country.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (08H30) The trial of accused Tony-Lee and Brandon-Lee Thulsie are expected to start in the Johannesburg High Court today, 07 February 2022. The accused face charges for plotting terrorist attacks on South African soil. Tony-Lee and Brandon-Lee Thulsie were arrested in 2016 following raids in various parts of Gauteng. The accused have been suspected of having links to the Islamic State. The accused have been denied bail twice and have been incarcerated for over five years, awaiting trial.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (09H15) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and EFF Member of Parliament Mbuyiseni Ndlozi are expected to appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate Court today, 07 February 2022. This follows after Afriforum opened a court case against the EFF for using hate speech during the Brendin Horner trial. EFF members have gathered outside the court. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.



  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (04H50) UPDATE Demonstrators have barricaded the road at the N3 Northbound approaching the Chota Motala onramp. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (03H40) Protest reported on Manning Avenue in the vicinity of Mountain Rise in Pietermaritzburg. Demonstrators have barricaded the roadway with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest action is unclear. However, previous demonstrations in the area have been related to service delivery issues regarding electricity. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (04H00) Road closure reported on the N3 Westbound approaching the Chatterton Road offramp in Pietermaritzburg. The road has been closed to motorists to allow recovery operations following a motor vehicle accident. Authorities are on the scene. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (08H15) Municipalities owe Umgeni Water R1,2-billion in KwaZulu-Natal. The Ladysmith’s uThukela District Municipality owes R268-million for bulk water. Umgeni Water currently has seven municipal customers, namely eThekwini Metro, uMgungundlovu, Harry Gwala, iLembe, Ugu and King Cetshwayo district municipalities, and Msunduzi. Umgeni Water Corporate Stakeholder Manager, Shami Harichunder, stated that three of the seven customers are in a situation of delayed payment. The others municipalities are up-to-date with payment.
  • DURBAN – 07 FEB 2022 (08H45) Police have launched an investigation into the murder of a victim on Butcher Road in Sydenham, Durban. This follows after a group of suspects shot and killed the victim on Sunday, 06 February 2022. Police stated that the incident is suspected to be gang-related.



  • MAROBENG – 07 FEB 2022 (06H30) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to inspect progress made by the National Department of Transport in completing a 40-kilometre rural access road project in the Greater Letaba local municipality on Tuesday, 08 February 2022. The road includes the R36 provincial route from Marobeng to the D11 road at Tshabelane, Capricorn and Mopani district municipalities. The construction of the road has created 115 work opportunities for youth and women from different villages in the local municipality. Ramaphosa’s visit comes at a time Limpopo is experiencing an increase in unemployment.
  • GA-MASEMOLA – 07 FEB 2022 (09H45) Protest reported on the R579 road at Ga-Masemola in Sekhukhune District. Demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstrators are throwing passing vehicles with stones. Motorists are advised to use the R37 road. Police are on the scene.



  • MALELANE – 07 FEB 2022 (08H00) Suspended African National Congress (ANC) Chairperson of the Ehlanzeni region, Ngrayi Ngwenya, has allegedly organised and sent 20 full minibuses to a venue where acting Mpumalanga ANC Chairperson Mandla Ndlovu was due to address Nkomazi municipality councillors on Thursday, 03 February 2022. This is in an attempt to unseat Mayor Johan Mkhatshwa. The group arrived first and prevented Ndlovu to address the ANC caucus. Ngwenya is serving a five-year suspension from the ANC after he was found guilty on charges relating to his support for the campaign against the incarceration of former President Jacob Zuma on contempt of court charges.
  • PHOLA – 07 FEB 2022 (09H00) The community of Phola has raised concerns regarding local mining companies in the area. The mining activities have caused damages to local infrastructure, including houses and tombstones. In 2019 Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe visited Phola to hear complaints and grievances from the affected communities. The ministry has not reported back nor resolved their grievances.



  • RUSTENBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (07H45) Rustenburg Local Municipality announced that Sebetsa Trading and Rolyn Engineering is expected to conduct an inspection of the pipeline burst affecting residents of Tlhabane West and Geelhout Park today, 07 February 2022. This follows after the pipe had previously burst and been repaired. However, burst again on Monday, 31 January 2022. Residents of Tlhabane West and Geelhout Park have been without water for more than a week.



  • KIMBERLEY – 07 FEB 2022 (07H10) The Police have launched an investigation into a business burglary after suspects robbed the Kimberley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) offices. Police Spokesperson Dikeledi Gopane stated that items valued at R90,000 and R4,000 have been stolen during the incident. Three offices have been broken into and one storeroom. No arrests have been made yet. The SPCA offices will be closed for the next two days.



  • GEORGE – 07 FEB 2022 (02H00) George Municipality Communications Officer Debra Sauer has called on members of the public to decrease water usage significantly. This follows after the Municipality recently expressed continued concerns regarding the primary drinking water reservoirs, which are reportedly experiencing severe pressure. The Municipality has stated that water consumption is being monitored hourly for all areas within the Municipality and that water restrictions have been implemented. Sauer has noted that the flow of water from reservoirs to the system is being restricted on an ongoing basis to compel a reduction in daily consumption.
  • PAARL – 07 FEB 2022 (07H30) Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungube and Deputy Minister in the Presidency Thembi Siweya are expected to conduct a Pre-State of the Nation Address (SONA) awareness campaign in Mbekweni today, 07 February 2022. The programme includes a door-to-door campaign at Mbekweni Thusong Service Centre and surrounding areas.
  • VREDENDAL – 07 FEB 2022 (09H30) Protest reported outside the Klawer Magistrate’s court. A 56-year-old suspect is expected to appear at the court due to the alleged murder of a 13-year-old victim, Jerobijin van Wyk. Klawer residents are demanding justice for the victim. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.



  • CAPE TOWN: President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver his State of the Nation Address (SONA) to the Joint Sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces on Thursday, 10 February 2022, at 19H00.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA: Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is expected to deliver the inaugural National Budget Speech on Wednesday, 23 February 2022.
  • JOHANNESBURG: South African Airways (SAA) announced that it will resume flights to Durban with three daily return flights from 04 March 2022.
