SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 08 APR 2022

  • EAST LONDON – 08 APR 2022 (07H00) UPDATE Demonstrations reported on Ziphunzana Bypass in Scenery Park. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.  (06H30) Protest reported on Black Road/ Mdantsane Access Road. Previous demonstrations have been related to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police have been dispatched.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 08 APR 2022 (15H00) The Nelson Mandela Bay Coalition (NMBC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have co-signed a petition with 61 signatures. The parties are requesting a special council meeting to mediate with three motions, including the removal of the Executive Mayor, Eugene Johnson. This is in an attempt to take over the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality from the African National Congress (ANC) Administration.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 08 APR 2022

  • WELKOM – 08 APR 2022 (00H45) The Police have launched a search operation in Riebeeckstad, Welkom. The search operation has been launched following the discovery of Maleke Rakaki in the Sand River on Wednesday, 23 March 2022. Reports indicate that Rakaki has been missing since Thursday, 17 March 2022. The suspect has allegedly confiscated Rakaki’s motor vehicle. The Police have requested the public to provide any information regarding the suspect’s apprehension.
  • TROMPSBURG – 08 APR 2022 (12H05) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is expected to hold its Workers Day Rally on Sunday, 01 May 2022, at the Caleb Motshabi Stadium. COSATU members are expected to hold a rally to recognise the union’s achievements. Motorists and members of the public are advised to be vigilant during the rally. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 08 APR 2022

  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 08 APR 2022 (11H40) UPDATE Members of the EFFSC have started gathering ahead of their protest at the Union Buildings. (06H00) Protest expected at the Union Buildings by the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) today, 08 April 2022 from 10H00. The EFFSC members are expected to protest for free education and the resignation of the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande. The EFFSC members will hand over a memorandum of demands to the Presidency. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes for the duration of the protest. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 08 APR 2022 (14H40) The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) is holding discussions with the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) in an attempt to avoid a strike. SATAWU has lodged a dispute with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) after the state entity failed to agree on a 7% wage increment and an adjustment of between 12% and 35% in packages for the 4,000 workers that it represents. However, SAMSA Corporate Affairs Executive Vusi September stated the negotiations for the current financial year at the entity are yet to begin.
  • DIEPSLOOT – 08 APR 2022 (15H20) UPDATE Police Minister Bheki Cele and Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi are addressing community members. This follows after the meeting with stakeholders. (13H50) Officials held a stakeholder meeting at the Youth Centre Hall in Diepsloot today, 08 April 2022. Police Minister Bheki Cele, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and Senior Police officials were at the meeting. Residents of Diepsloot attempted to attend the meeting. However, residents were not allowed to enter the hall. In addition, Police had to escort a Zimbabwe national out of the meeting. A total of seven people have been murdered in Diepsloot in 2022.
  • VEREENIGING – 08 APR 2022 (15H55) Flooding reported in parts of Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark. The flooding is due to heavy rain and hail. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.
  • SOWETO – 08 APR 2022 (18H15) UPDATE Demonstrators are continuing to protest on Legwale Road in Moletsane. Traffic is being diverted. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.  (08H20) Demonstrations reported on Koma Street/M72 between Chris Hani Road (M68) and Mandlempisi Street. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.  (06H40) Protest reported on Legwale Street in Moletsane, Soweto. Previous demonstrations have been related to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • ALEXANDRA – 08 APR 2022 (18H25) UPDATE Members of Operation Dudula are also protesting on the Pretoria Main Road/ M11 and Chadwick Avenue intersection heading towards Boxer Superstore in Alexandra. The road is closed to traffic. (18H00) Protest reported on 1st Avenue and John Brand Street near Boxer Superstore in Alexandra. Members of Operation Dudula are protesting against narcotics trading and illegal foreign nationals. This follows after Operation Dudula members allegedly found narcotics inside a residence belonging to a Nigerian national. Demonstrators are barricading the roads with burning tyres. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 08 APR 2022

  • UMLAZI – 08 APR 2022 (08H00) Protest reported at the Old Airport on Service Road. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with debris. Previous demonstrations in the area have been due to labour-related matters. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • EMPANGENI – 08 APR 2022 (11H30) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is expected to hold its Workers Day Rally on Sunday, 01 May 2022, at the Esikhawini TVET College Sports Field. COSATU members are expected to hold a rally to recognise the union’s achievements. Motorists and members of the public are advised to be vigilant during the rally. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 08 APR 2022

  • THOHOYANDOU – 08 APR 2022 (12H45) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is expected to hold its Workers Day Rally on Sunday, 01 May 2022, at the Makhuvha Stadium, R524/Punda Maria Road. COSATU members are expected to hold a rally to recognise the union’s achievements. Motorists and members of the public are advised to be vigilant during the rally. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 08 APR 2022 (17H30) The Limpopo Human Settlements Department is expected to deliver 4,895 housing units during the 2022/2023 financial year. Housing will be given to designated groups, namely, the elderly, child-headed families and people living with disabilities. An R2.4-billion budget has been allocated, of which R1.2-billion will be used to address housing. The Department stated that it is aware of the unfinished housing units and that they have only finished 84 units out of 1,589.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 08 APR 2022

  • MIDDELBURG – 08 APR 2022 (12H20) Protest reported on Hoog Street towards John Magagula Street. The demonstrators are marching against the Steve Tshwete Housing Association (STHA) for not providing service delivery and building maintenance. The demonstrators have blockaded the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

  • RUSTENBURG – 08 APR 2022 (08H25) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is expected to hold its Workers Day Rally on Sunday, 01 May 2022, at the Impala Rugby Stadium. COSATU members are expected to hold a rally to recognise the union’s achievements. Motorists and members of the public are advised to be vigilant during the rally. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • VENTERSDORP – 08 APR 2022 (08H30) Protest reported at the Municipality offices. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the area with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • RUSTENBURG – 08 APR 2022 (14H20) Two primary syndicate members are expected to appear in the Mogwase Magistrates’ Court today, 08 April 2022, on charges of illegal mining. This follows after a multi-disciplinary team that held an illegal mining operation at Batlhako mine in Rustenburg on Thursday afternoon, 07 April 2022. Authorities acted on the intelligence of illegal mining activities conducted by a syndicate. During the operation, two primary syndicate members have been arrested, whilst three suspects have been wounded after a chase ensued and a shootout. Approximately 3000 tons of chrome worth R2.5-million have been seized. In addition, to four Interlink trucks, one tipper truck, three excavators, two diesel tanks, two vehicles and a 9mm pistol. The three wounded suspects have been handed over to the Detective Services.
  • RUSTENBURG – 08 APR 2022 (16H45) Peaceful protest reported in the Melrose Arch area at Royal Bafokeng Nations (RBN) by community members. Demonstrators are protesting against RBN for not following a High Court order directing the RBN to give back land to individuals that rightfully own the land. Demonstrators have handed their memorandum of demands to the RBN management. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.

  • UPINGTON – 08 APR 2022 (07H50) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is expected to hold its Workers Day Rally on Sunday, 01 May 2022, at the Dicky Mxolisi Jacobs Stadium. COSATU members are expected to hold a rally to recognise the union’s achievements. Motorists and members of the public are advised to be vigilant during the rally. SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 08 APR 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 08 APR 2022 (07H00) Targeted murder reported in Primrose Park on Kunene Street. A suspect shot and killed a female victim in her vehicle. The suspect was travelling with other assailants in a white Volkswagen Golf. The victim was a witness in a criminal trial being heard at Wynberg Regional Court. Police have launched an investigation and opened a murder case.
  • CAPE TOWN – 08 APR 2022 (12H50) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is expected to hold its Workers Day Rally on Sunday, 01 May 2022, at the Langa Stadium. COSATU members are expected to hold a rally to recognise the union’s achievements. Motorists and members of the public are advised to be vigilant during the rally. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • GEORGE – 08 APR 2022 (15H30) The George Municipality announced that the Electro-Technical Department removed 1,085 illegal power connections at informal settlements in February 2022. The number of informal settlements in George is estimated at 8,000, of which 5,981 informal settlements shared between Thembalethu and Moeggeploeg have illegal and unsafe electricity connections. The Department stated that it will continue removing the illegal connections and educating the public about the dangers of illegal power connections.
  • CAPE TOWN – 08 APR 2022 (16H00) UPDATE Demonstrators have dispersed on the N7 and Malibongwe Drive in Du Noon. The road is open to traffic. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (12H00) Protest reported on the N7 and Malibongwe Drive in Du Noon. Community members are protesting due to housing disputes. Demonstrators are barricading the roads with debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • CAPE TOWN – 08 APR 2022 (16H20) UPDATE Residents from various land occupations have been demanding to be included in discussions about affordable housing taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre today, 08 April 2022. Demonstrators stated that it is essential that affected communities be included in finding solutions. However, the City of Cape Town launched its Land Release Programme for More Affordable Housing today.  (08H45) Peaceful protest reported outside the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The demonstrators are protesting due to labour-related matters. The demonstrators have blockaded the building. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area. Police have been dispatched.
