SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 08 FEB 2022

  • PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 08 FEB 2022 (08H00) The Democratic Alliance (DA) intends to table a motion in the Eastern Cape legislature today, 08 February 2022, calling for the Departments of Health and Education to be placed under administration. The party’s Provincial Leader, Nqaba Bhanga, claimed the province has been facing a money shortage due to the two departments’ finances and the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality’s inaction on the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) recommendations. The party is expected to table a motion for the two departments to be placed under administration in terms of Section 100 of the constitution. Other demands included in the motion are that an immediate overdraft facility is made available to allow the Education Department to distribute all outstanding textbooks and stationery to schools before the end of February 2022.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 08 FEB 2022

  • ODENDAALSRUS – 07 FEB 2022 (20H00) The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Makhotso Sotyu, is expected to report back on the waste management intervention in Matjhabeng Local Municipality on Tuesday, 08 February 2022, at the Odendaalsrus Town Hall from 09H00. The Deputy Minister’s intervention follows after a meeting held with the communities and stakeholders of Matjhabeng Local Municipality in 2020  about waste management issues, illegal dumping and the non-compliance of the landfill sites. The Deputy Minister will host a stakeholder engagement session to report back on the progress of the waste management intervention projects, namely Odendaalsrus Landfill site, Buy Back Centre, Street Cleaning and Waste Compactor Truck.
  • VILLIERS – 08 FEB 2022 (02H40) The N3 highway in the vicinity of Wilge Plaza, Villiers, has been reopened to traffic. This follows after the road had recently been closed to allow recovery operations following a motor vehicle accident involving a minibus taxi and a truck. 07 FEB 2022 (21H45) Road closure reported on the N3 approaching the Wilge Plaza Toll Booth in the vicinity of Villiers. The road has been closed to allow recovery operations following a motor vehicle accident. The N3 Northbound is currently obstructed to traffic. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 08 FEB 2022

  • JOHANNESBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (20H30) The Palm Ridge Specialised Crimes Court is expected to hear the case of two South African Police Service (SAPS), six former SAPS members, and seven suspects arrested on several charges related to the acquisition of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on Tuesday, 08 February 2022. The accused face charges of fraud, theft, corruption, and forgery arising from a scheme to unlawfully benefit a third-party supplier of latex gloves for the SAPS nationally in April 2020.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (22H40) Rand Water has announced an ongoing water supply interruption affecting several areas within the Gauteng province. The interruption reportedly follows a Rand Water power supply failure at the Mapleton Booster Station on Sunday, 06 February 2022. The station is supplied from a City of Ekurhuleni substation, which is fed from the Eskom power grid. The City of Tshwane has stated that the incident has affected the Vlakfontein Reservoir, which supplies the City area. Rand Water further informed the City that the previously scheduled repair of the transformer had been unsuccessful. As a result, their Mapleton Booster Station remains on 58% pumping capacity until further notice.
  • CENTURION – 08 FEB 2022 (06H00) Protest expected at the Netcare Unitas Hospital in Centurion today, 08 February 2022. The members affiliated with the United Eswatini Diaspora are expected to protest to demand the Queen mother of Eswatini, Ntombi Tfwala, to return to Eswatini to receive medical treatment in Eswatini Hospital. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the situation.
  • WELVERDIEND – 08 FEB 2022 (08H50) Protest reported on the R501 at the Welverdiend turn-off. Community members are protesting due to poor service delivery regarding electricity. The area has been without electricity for six days. Demonstrators are barricading the road with debris and vehicles. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 08 FEB 2022 (09H30) The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling for Ministers Bheki Cele and Ayanda Dlodlo to be removed from Cabinet immediately. This follows the release of the report into the July 2021 unrest that affected parts of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, claiming the lives of more than 300 people. The report revealed that the security services executive must take responsibility for its lapse of leadership, as it failed to respond to the unrest. The DA stated that the President now has concrete evidence to dismiss the Minister of Police and then Minister of Intelligence.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 08 FEB 2022

  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 07 FEB 2022 (23H10) UPDATE The N3 North and Southbound in the vicinity of Montrose has been reopened to allow the regular movement of traffic. Recovery operations are scheduled to proceed tomorrow, 08 February 2022. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling in the area. (21H50) Road closure reported on the N3 North and Southbound in the vicinity of Montrose, Pietermaritzburg. The road has been closed to allow recovery operations following a motor vehicle accident involving a truck. Authorities are on the scene. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes for the duration of the road closure.
  • ESHOWE – 08 FEB 2022 (06H40) UPDATE Community members are protesting due to poor service delivery regarding electricity supply in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (06H30) Protest reported on the R66 between Eshowe and Gingindlovu. Demonstrators are barricading the road with debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 08 FEB 2022

  • THAKGALANI – 08 FEB 2022 (08H25) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to conduct an oversight visit in Thakgalani village today, 08 February 2022, at 09H00. Ramaphosa will inspect progress made by the National Department of Transport in completing a 40-kilometre rural access road project.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 08 FEB 2022

  • MBOMBELA/ NELSPRUIT – 08 FEB 2022 (07H40) Australian mining company Vantage Goldfields is attempting to stop the sale of two Mpumalanga mines. This follows after Vantage approached the Mbombela High Court to appeal Judge President Francis Legodi’s 26 October 2021 judgment, in which he ordered business rescue practitioners Rob Devereux and Daniel Terblanche to recognise Arqomanzi (Pty) Ltd as the bidder for Lily and Barbrook mines. Arqomanzi had been trying to purchase the mines in Louisville, near Barberton. However, its attempts had been continuously thwarted by Vantage. Legodi also issued an order restraining the business rescue practitioners from making misrepresentations to any person that the mining rights could be transferred to another entity during the business rescue process. The judge dismissed Vantage’s application for leave to appeal, with costs, in a ruling issued on Friday, 04 February 2022.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 08 FEB 2022

  • POTCHEFSTROOM – 07 FEB 2022 (20H50) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the province is expected to hold its 6th Provincial Congress from Thursday, 10 February 2022, until Friday, 11 February 2022, at the Madiba Banquet Hall. The 6th Provincial Congress is held under the theme, Deepen the Back-To-Basics Campaign, Consolidate the Struggle for the National Democratic Revolution (NDR)  and Advance the Struggle for Socialism. The 6th Provincial Congress will receive a report which accounts for the past three years from 2018. The report will give an account of the organisational, socio-economic, political, and international programmes of the Federation in the province since the beginning of the term of office. The congress will also be seized with the important task of electing a provincial office bearers’ collective that will be tasked, inter-alia, with implementing the resolutions of the congress for the next term of office.
  • BRITS – 08 FEB 2022 (06H05) Road closure expected on the R511 Westbound off-ramp from the N4 between Brits and Hartbeespoort from 07H00 today, 08 February 2022, until 11 February 2022. The road is expected to be closed to motorists to allow emergency road repair operations. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes for the duration of the road closure.

  • KATHU – 08 FEB 2022 (07H10) Protest reported on the R380 and Ian Flemming Street near the Traffic Department in Kathu. Demonstrators are barricading the roads with debris. Previously, community members have been protesting due to the lack of work opportunities at the local mines. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 08 FEB 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 08 FEB 2022 (04H00) Authorities have announced that a suspect is expected to appear in court today, 08 February 2022, on allegations of arson in connection to the recent fire at the St George’s Cathedral in the Cape Town City Centre. The suspect has been accused of being involved in the fire that occurred in the basement of the St George’s Cathedral on Sunday, 06 February 2022. Western Cape Police Spokesperson Andrè Traut has stated that surveillance cameras of a hospitality establishment in the area captured footage of a possible suspect who had been seen in close proximity of the crime scene. Traut has noted that the motive for the arson is yet to be established and that further investigations are underway to establish the extent of damage caused by the fire.
  • CAPE TOWN – 08 FEB 2022 (06H10) The Presiding Officers of Parliament is expected to address the media today, 08 February 2022, at 09H30 on Parliament’s state of readiness to host the State of the Nation Address (SONA) 2022 by the President of the Republic on 10 February 2022. The briefing will take place at Parliament, Imbizo Centre.
  • CAPE TOWN – 08 FEB 2022 (06H45) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has renounced its court application to have all Members of Parliament (MPs) physically present for the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, 10 February 2022. The party launched an urgent application in the Western Cape High Court after Parliament announced the SONA would be a hybrid event, with a limited number of MPs attending physically and others connecting virtually. After a fire at the National Assembly building, this year’s SONA will be held at the Cape Town City Hall. Only 300 MPs will attend the event in person, while the rest will participate through the virtual platform.
