SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 09 MAR 2022

  • MAKHANDA/ GRAHAMSTOWN – 08 MAR 2022 (20H00) Police have arrested a scrap metal trader at a business premise in Makhanda today, 08 March 2022. The trader has been arrested for being in possession of 120 kilograms of illegal copper and trading in illegal copper. The Police responded to information received by an individual. The trader is expected to appear in Makhanda Magistrate’s Court on a charge of theft.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 09 MAR 2022

  • WELKOM – 09 MAR 2022 (07H20) UPDATE Protest reported on Tempest Road in Dagbreek. Taxi operators have blocked the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (06H00) Protest expected in Welkom today, 09 March 2022, by taxi operators. Demonstrators will be protesting due to a taxi dispute and deteriorating roads. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the protest. Police are aware of the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 09 MAR 2022

  • ALEXANDRA – 08 MAR 2022 (19H05) UPDATE Police have arrested five demonstrators during the protest by Operation Dudula members today, 08 March 2022. The demonstrators have been arrested for incitement of public unrest. Calm has been restored in Alexandra. (16H45) Demonstrators have dispersed at the Pan Africa Mall. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police are monitoring the situation. (14H00) Police are attempting to disperse demonstrators at Pan Africa Mall with rubber bullets and stun grenades. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (12H50) Police have restored calm in Alexandra following violent clashes between members of the Dudula movement and foreign nationals. (11H10) A heightened Police visibility reported in the vicinity of the Pan Africa Mall.  (09H00) Protest reported in Alexandra. The demonstrators have barricaded the area with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are on the scene.  (07H10) Ten people have been injured following clashes between Dudula Movement and foreign nationals during a march to stop foreigners from trading at the Pan Africa Mall and the Central Business District (CBD) in Alexandra. The foreign nationals resisted attempts to be removed and blocked from trading in the township. The Dudula group has threatened to shut down Alexandra for five days if immigrants are not removed from the township. Police have been deployed to monitor the area and reopen several businesses for trading.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 08 MAR 2022 (19H30) Protest expected at the Union Buildings on Saturday, 19 March 2022. Demonstrators will gather at the Pretoria Art Museum and march to the Union Buildings. Demonstrators will be marching in support of the human rights weekend. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the protest. Police are aware of the protest.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 08 MAR 2022 (19H30) Protest expected at the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on Saturday, 19 March 2022. Demonstrators will gather at the Civic Boulevard parking lot across the Johannesburg Theatre and march to the Union Buildings. Demonstrators will be marching in support of the human rights weekend. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the protest. Police are aware of the protest.
  • BRAKPAN – 08 MAR 2022 (20H15) Road closure reported on the N3 in the vicinity of Bongani Primary Farm School outside Vosloorus. The road is closed due to a motor vehicle accident. A traffic delay is reported. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 08 MAR 2022 (20H30) The National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI) calls on all relevant Government Ministers and President Cyril Ramaphosa to take decisive action against the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDFASA). This is due to the ATDFASA strike last week despite a court order to prevent the shutdown. The NBCRFLI stated that no notices had been issued to the Council. Therefore, the Council is questioning the legality of the strike and the Police’s failure to enforce the court order. The Council stated that it has negotiated, concluded, and signed the settlement agreement for the industry, which has been promulgated by the Minister of Employment and Labour for the implementation effective from 01 March 2022. The Council stated that the issue related to the employment of foreign nationals is a Government matter.
  • CARLETONVILLE – 09 MAR 2022 (06H05) Protest expected by members affiliated with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) today, 09 March 2022, at Sibanye Stillwater’s Gold operations. AMCU and NUM members will embark on an industrial action to demand a salary increase of R1,000 per month over the next three years. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • SANDTON – 09 MAR 2022 (07H40) Eskom has announced that stage 4 load shedding will be implemented from today, 09 March 2022, from 09H00 until Friday, 12 March 2022, at 05H00 to manage the emergency reserves. Thereafter load shedding will be lowered to stage 2 until 05H00 on Monday, 24 March 2022. Eskom stated that a unit each at Kendal, Duvha, Camden and Kusile power stations has tripped. Total breakdowns amount to 15,439 megawatts (MW), while planned maintenance is 5,505 MW of capacity.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 09 MAR 2022 (07H50) Protest reported at the Johannesburg Park Station. Employees are protesting due to the unfair dismissal of a shop steward. Gautrain Bus services have been suspended due to the protest. Members of the public are advised to use alternative transport. Police have been dispatched.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 09 MAR 2022 (09H25) The Johannesburg Magistrate Court is expected to hand down its judgement in the perjury case of the former Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini. The case relates to her testimony at an inquiry established by the Constitutional Court into her role in the 2017 social grant.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 09 MAR 2022

  • DURBAN – 09 MAR 2022 (06H10)  Protest expected at the Jasco Electrical Manufacturers in Pinetown 09 March 2022 by members affiliated with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) from 10H00. NUMSA members will be protesting for the 6% wage increase agreed on in October 2021 during the National Engineering strike. Jasco has applied for an urgent interdict. The court hearing will take place on Thursday, 10 March 2022. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the protest. Police are aware of the protest.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 09 MAR 2022

  • PIETERSBURG/POLOKWANE – 09 MAR 2022 (06H00) Explosion reported at the Gamma Substation on Railway Street. Reports indicate that explosion has been caused by an 11 Kilovolt (KV) circuit breaker that exploded. Two Municipality employees have been injured. The explosion has caused power outages in the following areas, Ladanna, Ladine, Industria, Laboria, Le Rouxville, Eduan Park, Futura, Extension 29, Emdo Park, Tom Naudé, Noorderland, Hoërskool Pietersburg, the Provincial hospital and SABC offices. The outage has also affected the power supply to correctional services, sewage works and the pump stations.
  • MARBLEHALL – 09 MAR 2022 (07H00) Protest reported on the N11/R33. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The road has been closed for traffic flow. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 09 MAR 2022

  • MACHADODORP – 09 MAR 2022 (03H25) UPDATE The N4 between Machadodorp and Belfast has been reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant.  (02H30) Recovery is in progress. Authorities have activated the contraflow procedure. (21H15) A truck transporting explosives is involved in the accident. The relevant authorities are on the scene to implement the required safety protocols. Motorists using the N4 between Nelspruit and Belfast is advised to use alternative routes, either through Lydenburg or Baberton.  (20H50) Road closure reported on the N4 at the Machado Toll Plaza. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.
  • ERMELO – 09 MAR 2022 (07H15) Protest reported at Acacia Crossing on the N2 towards Piet Retief. The demonstrators are reportedly throwing stones and debris towards motorists. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 09 MAR 2022

  • RUSTENBURG – 08 MAR 2022 (20H10) Protest reported on the R510 at the Tlou Street intersection in the Boitekong area. Community members are protesting due to poor service delivery regarding water shortages. Demonstrators are barricading the roads with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 09 MAR 2022

  • DOUGLAS – 09 MAR 2022 (07H20) The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Abraham Vosloo, is expected to table out the Provincial Budget Speech for 2022/23 today, 09 March 2022, from 10H00 at the Weslaan High School in Douglas.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 09 MAR 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 08 MAR 2022 (19H00) The City of Cape Town announced a scheduled water outage for three residential areas on Wednesday, 09 March 2022. The City’s Water and Sanitation Department will work on the 255mm diameter main water supply to Vredehoek, Tamboerskloof and Bo-Kaap. The affected areas will be without water from 20H00 until 00H00. In addition, five areas, including Milnerton, Epping, Grassy Park, Asanda Village and Kenilworth, will experience power interruption on Wednesday due to the City’s ongoing electrical maintenance.
  • CAPE TOWN – 08 MAR 2022 (19H20) Protest expected at the Parliament Building on Saturday, 19 March 2022. Demonstrators will gather at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and march to the Parliament Building. Demonstrators will be marching in support of the human rights weekend.
