SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 09 MAR 2022

  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 09 MAR 2022 (10H20) Protest expected by the members of the Green Connection today, 09 March 2022, at the Wells Estate Beach from 14H00 until 15H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest against offshore and oil and gas. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor.
  • PORT ST JOHNS – 09 MAR 2022 (13H20) Protest expected by the members of the Green Connection on Friday, 11 March 2022, at the Umngazi Beach from 11H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest against offshore oil and gas. The demonstrators are expected to disperse from 14H00. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
  • PATERSON – 09 MAR 2022 (14H10) Protest reported at the N10 and R342 intersection in Paterson. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Previously, parents of Sandulsilwazi high school have been protesting against the lack of teachers, classrooms and books. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • KARIEGA – 09 MAR 2022 (17H50) UPDATE Employees have delivered their memorandum of demands to the Chief Executive Officer of Uitenhage Provincial Hospital. Their demands include the shortage of employees and the permanent employment of community health workers. Demonstrators have dispersed at the entrance of the hospital. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (11H40) Protest reported at the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital. Employees are protesting due to employment-related matters. The demonstrators have barricaded the entrance of the hospital. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 09 MAR 2022

  • WELKOM – 09 MAR 2022 (12H00) UPDATE Demonstrations reported outside the Sibanye Stillwater. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (06H05) Protest expected by members affiliated with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) today, 09 March 2022, at Sibanye Stillwater’s Gold operations. AMCU and NUM members will embark on an industrial action to demand a salary increase of R1,000 per month over the next three years. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • THEUNISSEN – 09 MAR 2022 (16H00) Police have arrested two politicians from Theunissen-based Masilonyana Local Municipality today, 09 March 2022. The politicians have been arrested for incitement of violence during community unrest in 2021. The parental residence of Mayor Kunatu Koalane has been set alight, and a Police armoured vehicle has been petrol bombed by the protestors. The politicians are expected to appear at the Theunissen Magistrate Court soon.
  • WELKOM – 09 MAR 2022 (18H15) UPDATE Taxi operators have dispersed on Bok Street in Central Welkom. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police are monitoring the situation. (15H30) Police are attempting to disperse taxi operators with stun grenades. Roads that are affected include Bok Street at the intersection of Meulen Street, Stateway Street and Donkin Street. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area.  (07H20) Protest reported on Tempest Road in Dagbreek. Taxi operators have blocked the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area  (06H00) Protest expected in Welkom today, 09 March 2022 by taxi operators. Demonstrators will be protesting due to a taxi dispute and deteriorating roads. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the protest. Police are aware of the situation

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 09 MAR 2022

  • CARLETONVILLE – 09 MAR 2022 (06H05) Protest expected by members affiliated with the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) today, 09 March 2022, at Sibanye Stillwater’s Gold operations. AMCU and NUM members will embark on an industrial action to demand a salary increase of R1,000 per month over the next three years. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • SANDTON – 09 MAR 2022 (07H40) Eskom has announced that stage 4 load shedding will be implemented from today, 09 March 2022, from 09H00 until Friday, 12 March 2022, at 05H00 to manage the emergency reserves. Thereafter load shedding will be lowered to stage 2 until 05H00 on Monday, 24 March 2022. Eskom stated that a unit each at Kendal, Duvha, Camden and Kusile power stations has tripped. Total breakdowns amount to 15,439 megawatts (MW), while planned maintenance is 5,505 MW of capacity.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 09 MAR 2022 (07H50) Protest reported at the Johannesburg Park Station. Employees are protesting due to the unfair dismissal of a shop steward. Gautrain Bus services have been suspended due to the protest. Members of the public are advised to use alternative transport. Police have been dispatched.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 09 MAR 2022 (14H50) UPDATE The former Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini has been found guilty of perjury by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court. This is for being dishonest under oath before the Constitutional Court during the inquiry into social grants in 2017 and 2018. (10H40) Protest reported outside Magistrate by members of the African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League. The demonstrators are protesting in support of Dlamini. (09H25) The Johannesburg Magistrate Court is expected to hand down its judgement in the perjury case of the former Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini. The case relates to her testimony at an inquiry established by the Constitutional Court into her role in the 2017 social grant.
  • SANDTON – 09 MAR 2022 (16H00) Eskom has issued a warning that South Africans could force stage 6 load shedding. This comes as the price of Brent crude oil continues to rise due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Eskom stated that it continues to monitor and evaluate the impact of the conflict as oil and gas prices continue to increase. Eskom uses nine million litres of diesel a day. If dam levels fall and diesel capacity falls further, stage 6 load shedding can be expected.
  • BOSKBURG – 09 MAR 2022 (18H20) UPDATE Demonstrators have dispersed at the showgrounds near Voortrekker High School. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 09 MAR 2022

  • DURBAN – 09 MAR 2022 (18H30) UPDATE Members of NUMSA have dispersed outside Jasco Electrical Manufacturers. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police are monitoring the situation. (12H30) The NUMSA Regional Secretary, Mbuso Ngubane, has arrived to address the protesting employees. (11H30) Demonstrations reported outside the Jasco Electrical Manufacturers. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area.  (06H10)  Protest expected at the Jasco Electrical Manufacturers in Pinetown 09 March 2022 by members affiliated with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA)from 10H00. NUMSA members will be protesting for the 6% wage increase agreed on in October 2021 during the National Engineering strike. Jasco has applied for an urgent interdict. The court hearing will take place on Thursday, 10 March 2022. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the protest. Police are aware of the protest.
  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 09 MAR 2022 (18H40) UPDATE Demonstrators have dispersed on the R103 at City Hall. NDSASA has delivered their memorandum of demands. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police are monitoring the situation. (14H45) Roads affected by the protest include the intersection of Victoria Road and the R103, Victoria Road, R103 at Royal Show Grounds and Cordwalles Road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. (14H20) Members of the NDSASA has entered Pietermaritzburg, heading towards City Hall. Demonstrators are expected to deliver a memorandum of demands at the City Hall. The motorcade is escorted by traffic officials. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (11H15) Protest reported on the N3 in the vicinity of Shongweni towards Pietermaritzburg Members of the National Driving School Association of South Africa (NDSASA) are protesting against the electronic national administration traffic information system (NaTIS). Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 09 MAR 2022

  • PIETERSBURG/POLOKWANE – 09 MAR 2022 (06H00) Explosion reported at the Gamma Substation on Railway Street. Reports indicate that explosion has been caused by an 11 Kilovolt (KV) circuit breaker that exploded. Two Municipality employees have been injured. The explosion has caused power outages in the following areas, Ladanna, Ladine, Industria, Laboria, Le Rouxville, Eduan Park, Futura, Extension 29, Emdo Park, Tom Naudé, Noorderland, Hoërskool Pietersburg, the Provincial hospital and SABC offices. The outage has also affected the power supply to correctional services, sewage works and the pump stations.
  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 09 MAR 2022 (14H30) Protest reported at the Capricorn TVET College Seshego campus. Students are protesting over the non-payment of National Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allowances. Students have been given until 15H00 this afternoon to vacate the campus. It is alleged that the college is requesting students to submit supporting documents such as an affidavit and a signature of a parent on the declaration form before they can receive their allowances. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are on the scene.
  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 09 MAR 2022 (17H40) UPDATE The South African Student Organisation (SASCO) stated that it will stage a sit-in at the Capricorn TVET college head offices in Polokwane until their demands are met. SASCO Provincial Convenor Phineas Sebola stated that they will protest until accommodation allowances are paid directly into the account of students instead of that of their landlords.   • MACHADODORP – 09 MAR 2022 (03H25) UPDATE The N4 between Machadodorp and Belfast has been reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant.  (02H30) Recovery is in progress. Authorities have activated the contraflow procedure. (21H15) A truck transporting explosives is involved in the accident. The relevant authorities are on the scene to implement the required safety protocols. Motorists using the N4 between Nelspruit and Belfast is advised to use alternative routes, either through Lydenburg or Baberton.  (20H50) Road closure reported on the N4 at the Machado Toll Plaza. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.
  • ERMELO – 09 MAR 2022 (07H15) Protest reported at Acacia Crossing on the N2 towards Piet Retief. The demonstrators are reportedly throwing stones and debris towards motorists. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

  • ORKNEY – 09 MAR 2022 (10H30) Protest reported on Flecker Street. Taxi operators have blockaded the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
  • MAHIKENG – 09 MAR 2022 (13H40) Protest reported outside Mphekwa House, the African National Congress (ANC) Provincial office in Mahikeng. The ANC members are demanding that the councillor candidates who have been removed from the 2021 municipal elections list, be reinstated. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.   • RYSMIERBULT – 09 MAR 2022 (16H50) UPDATE Protest reported at Rysmierbult. The R501 heading towards Klerkskraal Dam is open to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant.
