• PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 09 MAY 2022 (07H10) UPDATE Demonstrations reported at the intersection of R335 and R102 in the vicinity of Planke Blackie shopping mall. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (05H35) Protest reported on Addo Road in Ikamvelihle. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• EAST LONDON – 09 MAY 2022 (14H55) Oscar Mabuyane has been re-elected as the Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape. Mabuyane has received 812 votes against Babalo Madikizela, who received 662 votes. The Provincial Conference was extended after challenges with confirming credentials.

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 09 MAY 2022
• PHUTHADITJHABA – 09 MAY 2022 (09H25) Service disruption expected in the De Bult area and Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital. Maluti-A-Phofung (MAP) Water has announced a water disruption due to an obstruction of access to fix the water supply system. MAP Water Spokesperson, Kelopile Mongake, stated that water tankers will be dispatched to the affected areas until MAP Waters’s technicians gain physical access to fix the pipe.
• BLOEMFONTEIN – 09 MAY 2022 (11H40) Protest reported at the Motheo TVET College. Students have blockaded the gates with burning tyres and debris. Students demand classes to be halted until their allowances are paid. The situation is volatile. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

• ROODEPOORT – 09 MAY 2022 (03H20) Truck attacks reported on the N3 from Johannesburg towards Harrismith. Reports indicate suspects are throwing stones at the trucks on the N3. Truckers are advised to be vigilant when driving in the area.
• JOHANNESBURG – 09 MAY 2022 (08H10) Protest expected by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members on Wednesday, 25 May 2022, from 10H00 at the French Embassy. The EFF members are expected to protest to demand the withdrawal of France from the continent. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• CARLETONVILLE – 09 MAY 2022 (10H50) The Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited has announced that four employees have died on Saturday, 07 May 2022, during a maintenance-related incident at its Kusasalethu mine. Harmony Gold stated that the affected part of the mine had been closed pending investigations.
• BRAKPAN – 09 MAY 2022 (12H05) Cash in Transit (CIT) robbery reported at Tsakane Corner. Reports indicate that unidentified suspects have robbed an armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries have been reported. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
• SANDTON – 09 MAY 2022 (14H00) Eskom announced the resignation of Group Executive for Generation Phillip Dukashe. Dukashe’s last day will be on 31 May 2022. Rhulani Mathebula will act as interim Group Executive for Generation while the recruitment process is initiated. Rhulani is the second Power Station General Manager and has acted as Group Executive for Generation before the appointment of Phillip Dukashe.
• JOHANNESBURG – 09 MAY 2022 (14H45) The Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital has begun the implementation of a new fire control system as part of its repair work. This follows after a fire damaged sections of the facility in April 2021. Health Minister Joe Phaahla stated that the estimated completion of the project is November 2023. The Health Department has also unveiled the newly refurbished accident and emergency unit worth R68-million. Over 50% of the staff at the facility have been trained on how to use the fire control system. There is still no technical report on what caused the fire at the hospital in April 2021.
• CARLETONVILLE – 09 MAY 2022 (15H40) Sibanye Stillwater employees have gathered at the mine stadium in Carletonville for a meeting. The employees are expected to be briefed on the progress made by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 09 MAY 2022 (16H00) Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has announced that the Government has gazetted national rail policy frameworks that allow the private sector to intervene and operate passenger rail services. The new policy sought to address capacity challenges by allowing private sector investors the opportunity to operate passenger rail services. Mbalula stated that where the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) cannot run services, the policy introduces concessions on other lines where the private sector can operate services.
• SANDTON – 09 MAY 2022 (16H00) Eskom announced that it will implement stage 2 loadshedding from 17H00 to 22H00 today, 09 May 2022, as the power system is severely constrained.
• JOHANNESBURG – 09 MAY 2022 (16H15) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is expected to convene a Health Committee meeting on 23 June 2022. The purpose of the meeting is to give an update on the National Health Insurance (NHI) and present COSATU’s position on the NHI.

• IXOPO – 09 MAY 2022 (06H10) Attempted Cash in Transit (CIT) robbery reported on the R56 between Richmond and Ixopo. Reports indicate that unidentified suspects attempted to rob an armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money. However, the SBV Security officers repelled the robbery. Reports indicate that an SBV security guard has sustained injuries. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
• WASBANK – 09 MAY 2022 (08H15) Protest reported on the R602 between Glencoe and Ladysmith in Wasbank. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

• PIETERSBURG/POLOKWANE – 09 MAY 2022 (07H20) Protest reported outside the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), Polokwane Campus. Students have blockaded the entrance of the school following their removal from student residence. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

• WITBANK/EMALAHLENI – 09 MAY 2022 (06H00) Protest expected by residents of Ward 19 and 21 in Duvha Park today, 09 May 2022. The residents are expected to protest against illegal mining activities affecting Duvha Park, El Paso settlement, Tasbet Park, Reyno Ridge and Ben Fleur. The demonstrators are expected to barricade the R544 in the vicinity of Tasbet Spar Store, Jan Lion Cachet bridge between Duvha Park, El Paso settlement, and Tasbet Park. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• NELSPRUIT/MBOMBELA – 09 MAY 2022 (12H00) UPDATE The Magistrate Court has postponed the case of Sipho Mkhatshwa, Philemon Lukhele and Mduduzi Nkala to Thursday, 09 June 2022. The accused have been charged with conspiracy for murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, murder, possession of a firearm and defeating the ends of justice. (09H05) Demonstrations reported outside the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members ahead of the appearance of the three suspects. Heightened Police visibility has been reported outside the Magistrate Court. (07H30) Three suspects are expected to appear at the Nelspruit Magistrate Court in connection to the Hillary Gardee murder case. Hillary Gardee is the daughter of the former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Secretary-General, Godrich Gardee. Gardee was abducted on Friday, 29 April 2022 and was found killed along the Lydenburg road outside Mbombela.
• SCHOEMANSKLOOF – 09 MAY 2022 (17H50) Road closure reported on the R539 in the vicinity of Viva Petrol Station in Schoemanskloof. The road is closed due to a motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.

• RUSTENBURG – 09 MAY 2022 (10H25) Protest reported outside the Rustenburg Local Municipality Head office and the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality. Contractors have locked the gates of the Municipalities due to unpaid money for services rendered. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
• KLERKSDORP – 09 MAY 2022 (13H00) Protest expected by Students of Vuselela TVET college, Jouberton Campus on Tuesday, 10 May 2022. The students are expected to gather at Jouberton Library from 08H00 and march to the campus. The demonstrators are expected to hand over a memorandum of demands and demand the removal of the Student Representative Council (SRC) Chairperson. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• KOSTER – 09 MAY 2022 (14H20) Fire reported at a local store on the R509 in Koster. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. The Fire Department has been dispatched to the scene. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
• HARTBEESPOORT – 09 MAY 2022 (16H45) Road closure expected on the R104 between the Engen Petrol Station in Damdoryn and the Snake Park from Monday, 23 May 2022, until Thursday, 26 May 2022. The Department of Water and Sanitation will use the time to due road maintenance and clean-up action around the Hartbeespoort Dam.
• SONOP – 09 MAY 2022 (17H35) UPDATE Residents are continuing to protest on Sonop Road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene. (13H30) Demonstrators have dispersed in Sonop. Madibeng Local Municipality management is expected to hold a meeting with the residents at 16H30 today, 09 May 2022, to address their grievances. SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 09 MAY 2022
• PRIESKA – 09 MAY 2022 (09H00) Orion Minerals has announced that it has signed non-binding term sheets for an US$87-million funding package with Triple Flag company that will advance its Prieska Copper-Zinc Mine in the province. The funding package is expected to underpin an early production scenario at Prieska that includes a plan to bring forward production from the open pit while dewatering the underground mine in preparation for long-term operations.
• BARKLY WEST – 09 MAY 2022 (12H30) Protest reported on the R31 between Kimberley and Barkly West in the vicinity of Lerato Park informal settlement. Community members have barricaded the roadway to demand that outstanding work be completed on the local electricity project that had recently been halted. Demonstrators are calling on the Sol Plaatjie Municipality’s Executive Mayor and the contractors to address them before the road is reopened. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Authorities are monitoring the situation.

• CAPE TOWN – 09 MAY 2022 (06H25) The Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, is expected to deliver the 2022 Investing in Africa Mining Indaba opening address today, 09 May 2022, from 09H00 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Government is expected to participate in the 2022 Investing in Africa Mining Indaba to be convened under the theme Evolution of African Mining, Investing in the Energy Transition, Environmental Social and Governance (ESG), and the Economies. President Cyril Ramaphosa is also expected to deliver a keynote address on Tuesday, 10 May 2022, from 09H30 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Indaba is expected to bring together global leaders, captains of the industry, and investors to engage in the future of mining and explore ways to attract investments in African mining. Delegates at the Conference are further expected to examine challenges faced by the industry and explore opportunities to be embraced amid concerns regarding climate change and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
• CAPE TOWN – 09 MAY 2022 (13H55) Police have launched a search operation for suspects involved in the shooting that occurred in Khayelitsha. Six causalities have been reported. This is Khayelitsha’s third mass shooting in three months. The Police stated that they cannot rule out extortion, gang violence and taxi violence.
• CAPE TOWN – 09 MAY 2022 (14H30) Business robbery reported at the U Save store on Willow Way in Belhar. Armed suspects robbed to store of an undisclosed amount of money and items. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police have been dispatched to the scene
