SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 13 APR 2022

  • PORT ST JOHNS – 12 APR 2022 (22H40) Community members from the Port St Johns area in the Eastern Cape have been evacuated from low-lying areas as a result of ongoing flooding. This follows widespread adverse weather conditions and torrential rainfalls in the region. The torrential rains have caused a significant overflow of the Mzimvubu river, which is located next to the Port St Johns area. The town hall that has been prepared to accommodate the worst-affected residents has also been flooded. Further emergency response efforts are underway in the area.
  • DESPATCH – 13 APR 2022 (05H45) Protest reported on the R75/Uitenhage Road in the vicinity of Joe Slovo and the M19/Perseverance Road. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 13 APR 2022

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 13 APR 2022 (08H40) The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the Department of Police, Roads and Transport in the province, William Bulwane, is expected to will launch the 2022 Easter Road Safety Campaign today, 13 April 2022. This campaign is a government initiative to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and prevent negligent and reckless driving during the Easter period.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 13 APR 2022

  • SOWETO – 12 APR 2022 (21H00) Protest reported on the M72 Koma Road in Zondi. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Community members are protesting due to power outages. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 12 APR 2022 (23H00) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to participate in the Southern African Development Community (SAC) Extraordinary Organ Troika Summit which includes countries contributing Military personnel to the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM). The Summit is scheduled for Tuesday, 13 April 2022. In his capacity as Chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Co-Operation, Ramaphosa has stated that it has been six months since the approval of the standby forces’ rapid deployment capability mission in Mozambique to combat terrorism and extremism in the Cabo Delgado province. Ramaphosa has stated that the Ministerial Organ Committee has also directed the SADC Secretariat to convene a meeting to develop the SAMIM exit strategy.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 13 APR 2022 (00H25) The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has issued a notice indicating that Union members in the bus passenger sector are not expected to embark on protest action throughout the Easter weekend period, from Friday, 15 April 2022, until Monday, 18 April 2022. This follows as NUMSA has been engaging in meetings with employer associations in the bus passenger section, including the South African Bus Employers Association (SABEA) and the Commuter Bus Employer Association (COBEA). The meetings have been held under the auspices of the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council (SARPBAC). The employers have reportedly tabled a revised offer, proposing a 4,5% increase across the board, including allowances, for all employers. As a result, strike action will not proceed to allow further negotiations and subsequent consideration of the tabled offers. The following meeting with employers has reportedly been scheduled for 22 April 2022.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 13 APR 2022 (02H10) The Department of Transport has announced that Minister Fikile Mbalula, joined by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) Board of Control and PRASA Management, is expected to embark on an inspection visit of the Saulsville to Pretoria train line from 08H00 on Wednesday, 13 April 2022. This follows the introduction of full commercial services of the new Electric Motor Units (EMUs) as part of monitoring progress made by PRASA in relaunching train services. The visit forms part of PRASA’s service recovery program aimed at recovering and restoring the rail network while expediting the implementation of the new modern electric trains. The Saulsville line is the third of the five lines in Tshwane to be relaunched.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 13 APR 2022 (04H45) UPDATE Road closure reported on the N4 approaching the R964 turnoff due to ongoing protest action in the Donkerhoek area. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.  (04H30) UPDATE Demonstrations reported on the N4 and the R104/ Bronkhorstspruit Road in the Lethabong area. Reports indicate that protestors are throwing rocks at passerby vehicles on the N4 from the overpassing bridge. Authorities have been mobilised to the scene. (02H00) Protest expected on the R104/ Bronkhorstspruit Road in the Lethabong area, Pretoria, from 02H00 on Wednesday, 13 April 2022. Cullinan Community Policing Forum (CPF) has issued a notice of a suspected protest being planned by community members in the area against service delivery related matters. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. All relevant authorities have been informed of the planned protest action.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 13 APR 2022 (06H00) Protest expected by the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) members today, 13 April 2022, at the Constitutional Court. The demonstrators are expected to gather at Beyer Naude Square from 10H00. The demonstrators are expected to march to the court to defend the right of churches to meet without gathering restrictions or need to provide vaccine certificates. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to the area.
  • SPRINGS – 13 APR 2022 (07H25) Protest reported on Tonk Meter Road/ M63. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 13 APR 2022 (09H20) The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) are expected to hold a meeting with Anglo American Platinum, Sibanye Stillwater and Impala Platinum Holdings today, 13 April 2022. Unions are expected to discuss wage demands with the mines. This is during the ongoing strike at Sibanye Stillwater’s gold operations.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 13 APR 2022

  • DURBAN – 12 APR 2022 (19H00) Transnet suspended shipping at its Durban terminals until further notice due to severe flooding in KwaZulu-Natal. There have been no major incidents at the terminals. Transnet is taking precautionary measures as the flooding damaged road infrastructure in the province, affecting access to terminals. Transnet advised customers at its Durban terminal to hold back on bringing trucks into the port to avoid congestion.
  • KWAMASHU – 12 APR 2022 (20H10) Protest reported on the M21 in the vicinity of BP KwaMashu Fuel Station. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery regarding electricity. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • DURBAN – 12 APR 2022 (21H10) Protest reported on Bellair Road/ M10 between Cato Manor and Bellair in the vicinity of Berea. Demonstrators are reportedly obstructing the roadway with debris. The reason for the demonstration remains undetermined at this time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Authorities are aware of the matter.
  • DURBAN – 12 APR 2022 (21H40) Reports of opportunistic lootings occurring in the Umlazi informal sector and surrounding areas. Members of the community are advised to remain calm as Community Policing Forum (CPF) teams have been dispatched to strategic areas throughout the region. There have been reports of lootings at the Umlazi Mega City, Pep DC on Fibres Road, and the SAB Prospection Brewery. Police and other security teams are on high alert to assist the public.
  • DURBAN – 12 APR 2022 (22H10) UPDATE KwaZulu-Natal provincial authorities have confirmed that the preliminary death toll from the recent widespread floodings in the province has increased to 59. At least 45 people have been reported deceased in the eThekwini region. in Hammarsdale, west of Durban, an additional five deaths have also been confirmed after a family’s house collapsed due to mudslides. Further assessments of the situation are underway. (16H25) The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal announced that 45 people have been killed by the floods since the heavy rainfall started. The heavy rains have caused numerous road closures and flooding in low-lying areas. The cost of repairing buildings and houses is estimated to be in the millions of rands. The Mayor of eThekwini, Mxolisi Kaunda, has urged residents to stay at home and avoid leaving their residences as roads remain impassable. Trucks are being diverted from the N3 to the Hammarsdale off-ramp as a precautionary measure due to waterlogging on some sections of the N3.
  • MOUNT EDGECOMBE – 12 APR 2022 (23H00) The pollution control dam at the United Phosphorus Limited (UPL) chemical factory in Cornubia, Durban, has spilt following increased rainfall in the region. This follows after the warehouse had previously sustained significant damages during a fire amid the July 2021 lootings, which led to the release of various harmful chemicals into the air and nearby watercourses. The Environment Ministry has stated that UPL failed to present the appropriate permits to store the chemicals. However, the company has denied the allegation. UPL has stated that the increased rainfall has accumulated a concerning volume of stormwater in the PCD. In response, UPL has resumed extraction to tankers and implemented systems to reduce the volume of rainwater entering the PCD. Despite these interventions, due to ongoing heavy rainfall, the PCD is still exceeding its maximum capacity. UPL Specialists have stated that the spilt water contains extremely diluted contaminants.
  • DURBAN – 13 APR 2022 (07H10) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit areas affected by flooding in the province today, 13 April 2022, from 10H30. The President’s visit follows recent meetings with the National Disaster Management Centre and the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Disaster Management. The Disaster Management Centre is expected to coordinate integrated response efforts. The President will be briefed on the situation in the KZN area by Premier Sihle Zikalala and eThekwini Metro Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda. The community is calling for a National State of Disaster to be declared to assist efforts in response to the flooding.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 13 APR 2022

  • SALEMANI – 12 APR 2022 (20H20) Police are investigating an act of vigilantism on a female victim in Salema Village on Monday, 11 April 2022. The community accused the victim of being responsible for the disappearance of a local man who allegedly went missing two weeks ago. Community members set the victim’s residents alight. The victim was an alleged loan shark in the area. Police dispersed the community with rubber bullets. Cases of murder, public violence, arson and malicious damage to property have been opened. Police launched a manhunt for the suspects.
  • PIETERSBURG/ POLOKWANE – 13 APR 2022 (01H00) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the Limpopo province is expected to host District Cluster Shopsteward Councils in all five COSATU districts as part of the mobilisation for the 2022 May Day celebrations on 01 May 2022. The provincial African National Congress (ANC) is expected to be represented at the councils by its Provincial Executive Council (PEC) deployees to the five ANC regions. In the Sekhukhune district, the event is set to be held at the Jane Furse Comprehensive School Hall. The Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre is set to host the Vhembe district celebrations. In the Waterberg district, the Council will be held at the OR Tambo Hall in Modimole. The Nkowankowa Community Hall is expected to host the Mopani district council, and in the Capricorn district, the event will be held at the Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane. The Councils are scheduled to commence from 09H00 on 13 April 2022.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 13 APR 2022

  • KABOKWENI – 12 APR 2022 (20H30) The Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court has postponed the case of accused Sandiso Ngomane to 19 April 2022 for a formal bail application. The accused was arrested on 07 April 2022 by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation after he was linked to a cash in transit (CIT) robbery through fingerprints. The suspect is allegedly involved in a CIT robbery of a Fidelity armoured vehicle that was travelling from Mbombela to Masoyi on 19 March 2022. The armoured van was bombed, and three safes were opened.
  • KRIEL – 12 APR 2022 (20H40) Road closure reported on the R547 between the graveyard and Thubelihle. The road is closed due to a motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services have been dispatched to the scene.
  • KOMATIPOORT – 13 APR 2022 (07H40) The Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner, Nakampe Masiapato, is expected to undertake a two-day visit to the Lebombo Port of Entry to brief on the country’s Easter season plans from today, 13 April 2022, until 14 April 2022, from 10H00. Masiapato is set to meet with representatives from the Mozambican government to announce details of the bilateral agreement between the two countries in relation to immigration and border control issues, including the extension of operational hours at the Lebombo Port of Entry.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 13 APR 2022

  • KLERKSDORP – 12 APR 2022 (20H00) The Klerksdorp Regional Court has postponed the sentencing of a murder suspect, Confidence Sekgoro, to 11 May 2022. Sekgoro was found guilty of one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder following a shooting incident in 2019. The case has been postponed to allow the probation officer to receive Sekgoro’s medical report and for her to submit a comprehensive report in preparation for sentencing.
  • MAHIKENG – 13 APR 2022 (06H10) Protest expected by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members today, 13 April 2022, at the  Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) from 09H00 and Premier’s office from 13H00. The EFF members are expected to protest against police brutality, community safety and service delivery in the province. The demonstrators are expected to deliver memorandum of demands at the offices. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 13 APR 2022

  • STRYDENBURG – 13 APR 2022 (06H40) Protest expected by community members today, 13 April 2022, at the Strydenburg Magistrate’s Court. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand the court to deny bail for Anthony Harris Samson, who has been accused of murdering his partner, Natasha Goeieman. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be dispatched to monitor the area.

  • CAPE TOWN – 12 APR 2022 (22H00) Protest reported on Old Faure Road approaching Mew Way in the vicinity of Khayelitsha, Cape Town. Informal settlement residents are demonstrating to demand improved service delivery in the community. Participants are barricading the roadway with burning tyres and debris.
