  • DESPATCH – 13 APR 2022 (05H45) Protest reported on the R75/Uitenhage Road in the vicinity of Joe Slovo and the M19/Perseverance Road. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 13 APR 2022 (11H55) Shooting reported on Heugh Road in Walmer. One fatality has been reported. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 13 APR 2022

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 13 APR 2022 (08H40) The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the Department of Police, Roads and Transport in the province, William Bulwane, is expected to launch the 2022 Easter Road Safety Campaign today, 13 April 2022. This campaign is a government initiative to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and prevent negligent and reckless driving during the Easter period.
  • CAROLINA – 13 APR 2022 (13H50) Attempted cash in transit (CIT) robbery reported on the R33 in Carolina. Suspects failed to ram an armoured vehicle and tried to set it alight. The armoured vehicle continued driving. The Police and the Flying Squad secured the armoured vehicle. The suspects fled the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are investigating the matter.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 13 APR 2022

  • JOHANNESBURG – 13 APR 2022 (00H25) The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has issued a notice indicating that Union members in the bus passenger sector are not expected to embark on protest action throughout the Easter weekend period, from Friday, 15 April 2022, until Monday, 18 April 2022. This follows as NUMSA has been engaging in meetings with employer associations in the bus passenger section, including the South African Bus Employers Association (SABEA) and the Commuter Bus Employer Association (COBEA). The meetings have been held under the auspices of the South African Road Passenger Bargaining Council (SARPBAC). The employers have reportedly tabled a revised offer, proposing a 4,5% increase across the board, including allowances, for all employers. As a result, strike action will not proceed to allow further negotiations and subsequent consideration of the tabled offers. The following meeting with employers has reportedly been scheduled for 22 April 2022.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 13 APR 2022 (02H10) The Department of Transport has announced that Minister Fikile Mbalula, joined by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) Board of Control and PRASA Management, is expected to embark on an inspection visit of the Saulsville to Pretoria train line from 08H00 on Wednesday, 13 April 2022. This follows the introduction of full commercial services of the new Electric Motor Units (EMUs) as part of monitoring progress made by PRASA in relaunching train services. The visit forms part of PRASA’s service recovery program aimed at recovering and restoring the rail network while expediting the implementation of the new modern electric trains. The Saulsville line is the third of the five lines in Tshwane to be relaunched.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 13 APR 2022 (14H25) UPDATE The R104/ Bronkhorstspruit Road and the N4 in the Lethabong area have been reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (04H45) Road closure reported on the N4 approaching the R964 turnoff due to ongoing protest action in the Donkerhoek area. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.  (04H30) Demonstrations reported on the N4 and the R104/ Bronkhorstspruit Road in the Lethabong area. Reports indicate that protestors are throwing rocks at passerby vehicles on the N4 from the overpassing bridge. Authorities have been mobilised to the scene. (02H00) Protest expected on the R104/ Bronkhorstspruit Road in the Lethabong area, Pretoria, from 02H00 on Wednesday, 13 April 2022. Cullinan Community Policing Forum (CPF) has issued a notice of a suspected protest being planned by community members in the area against service delivery related matters. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. All relevant authorities have been informed of the planned protest action.
  • SPRINGS – 13 APR 2022 (07H25) Protest reported on Tonk Meter Road/ M63. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 13 APR 2022 (09H20) The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) are expected to hold a meeting with Anglo American Platinum, Sibanye Stillwater and Impala Platinum Holdings today, 13 April 2022. Unions are expected to discuss wage demands with the mines. This is during the ongoing strike at Sibanye Stillwater’s gold operations.
  • SOWETO – 13 APR 2022 (10H50) Operation Dudula Leader Nhlanhla Lux Dlamini is expected to appear at the Meadowlands Magistrate’s court today, 13 April 2022, on charges related assault case that Dlamini allegedly committed in 2019.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 13 APR 2022 (11H30) Protest reported on the M1 North at the Crown Interchange. Construction employees are protesting due to labour-related matters. The demonstrators have blockaded the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • SOWETO – 13 APR 2022 (12H15) Protest reported at the Bhukulani Secondary School. Parents are protesting to demand the school principal’s immediate removal due to failing to manage the school. The demonstrators have blockaded the entrance of the school. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 13 APR 2022 (13H00) UPDATE Demonstrations reported outside the Constitutional Court. Members of the public are advised to be vigilant. (06H00) Protest expected by the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) members today, 13 April 2022, at the Constitutional Court. The demonstrators are expected to gather at Beyer Naude Square from 10H00. The demonstrators are expected to march to the court to defend the right of churches to meet without gathering restrictions or need to provide vaccine certificates. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to the area.
  • LENASIA – 13 APR 2022 (13H30) Protest reported on the R554 near Scorpio Drive in Extension 9. Demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area. Police are on the scene.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 13 APR 2022 (18H00) Police have arrested an immigration officer at OR Tambo for allegedly facilitating the entrance of Bangladeshi illegal foreign nationals without proper documentation. The Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi, stated that the syndicate includes a runner who recruits Bangladeshi who do not qualify to visit South Africa (SA) and members of the airline in Bangladesh. All of these operations are coordinated by a kingpin. The kingpin charges them around R110,000. A member of the airline smuggles the illegal Bangladeshis by either providing false names of the passenger or by not including the name of the passenger in the list of travellers on the flight.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 13 APR 2022

  • DURBAN – 13 APR 2022 (07H10) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit areas affected by flooding in the province today, 13 April 2022, from 10H30. The President’s visit follows recent meetings with the National Disaster Management Centre and the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Disaster Management. The Disaster Management Centre is expected to coordinate integrated response efforts. The President will be briefed on the situation in the KZN area by Premier Sihle Zikalala and eThekwini Metro Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda. The community is calling for the National State of Disaster to be declared to assist efforts in response to the flooding.
  • DURBAN – 13 APR 2022 (14H45) UPDATE The Shongweni Dam’s gates have collapsed, which is part of the plan to allow for free-flowing during flooding. Shongweni Dam is installed with Hydroplus fuse gates, which are designed to release gradually as the flood increases. In this case, the first two gates dropped off with the current flood. This is necessary for dam safety. (13H55) The Shongweni Dam wall has collapsed, releasing megalitres of water to the upper Umlazi river that flows towards the old airport. This is due to adverse weather this week. The public is advised to avoid the area.
  • DURBAN – 13 APR 2022 (15H00) Road closure reported on the M4 Tongati Bridge. The bridge is permanently closed. Motorists are advised to use the N2 North Compensation offramp to access Ballito and Zimbali.
  • DURBAN – 13 APR 2022 (16H00) The Road Freight Association’s Chief Executive Officer, Gavin Kelly, has requested that all freight movements toward the Port of Durban be suspended until the situation at the Port has improved. The Mariannhill Toll Plaza has a backlog of 10 kilometres to Hammarsdale. Historically, looters targeted freight vehicles along the N3.
  • INANDA – 13 APR 2022 (17H40) Protest reported on the M25 in Inanda by Bhambayi residents. Community members are accusing the Police of failing to search for three families that have been swept away by the floods. The community is also dissatisfied that President Cyril Ramaphosa did not visit the area. Demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 13 APR 2022

  • PIETERSBURG/ POLOKWANE – 13 APR 2022 (01H00) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) in the Limpopo province is expected to host District Cluster Shopsteward Councils in all five COSATU districts as part of the mobilisation for the 2022 May Day celebrations on 01 May 2022. The provincial African National Congress (ANC) is expected to be represented at the councils by its Provincial Executive Council (PEC) deployees to the five ANC regions. In the Sekhukhune district, the event is set to be held at the Jane Furse Comprehensive School Hall. The Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre is set to host the Vhembe district celebrations. In the Waterberg district, the Council will be held at the OR Tambo Hall in Modimole. The Nkowankowa Community Hall is expected to host the Mopani district council, and in the Capricorn district, the event will be held at the Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane. The Councils are scheduled to commence from 09H00 on 13 April 2022.
  • POTGIETERSRUS/ MOKOPANE – 13 APR 2022 (17H15) Eight workers have been placed on suspension for alleged corruption and maladministration in the Mogalakwena municipality in Mokopane. The municipality is acting on the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report, which recommended the suspension and that the matter be taken for prosecution. The workers will be suspended for three months pending investigations. The municipality has incurred unauthorised expenditure of nearly R3-billion between 2015 and 2019.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 13 APR 2022

  • KOMATIPOORT – 13 APR 2022 (07H40) The Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner, Nakampe Masiapato, is expected to undertake a two-day visit to the Lebombo Port of Entry to brief on the country’s Easter season plans from today, 13 April 2022, until 14 April 2022, from 10H00. Masiapato is set to meet with representatives from the Mozambican government to announce details of the bilateral agreement between the two countries in relation to immigration and border control issues, including the extension of operational hours at the Lebombo Port of Entry.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 13 APR 2022

  • MAHIKENG – 13 APR 2022 (12H20) Protest reported outside the Mmabatho Magistrate Court. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members are protesting ahead of the first appearance of two police officers accused of sexually assaulting a woman in March 2022. The demonstrators have blockaded the entrance of the court. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • MAHIKENG – 13 APR 2022 (15H30) UPDATE EFF members are marching to the North West Premier’s office. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (12H40) Demonstrations reported outside the IPID offices. The Treasurer General of the EFF, Ompile Maotwe, has begun reading the memorandum of demands to the management. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area. (06H10) Protest expected by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) members today, 13 April 2022, at the  Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) from 09H00 and Premier’s office from 13H00. The EFF members are expected to protest against police brutality, community safety and service delivery in the province. The demonstrators are expected to deliver a memorandum of demands at the offices. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 13 APR 2022

  • STRYDENBURG – 13 APR 2022 (06H40) Protest expected by community members today, 13 April 2022, at the Strydenburg Magistrate’s Court. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand the court to deny bail for Anthony Harris Samson, who has been accused of murdering his partner, Natasha Goeieman. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be dispatched to monitor the area.
  • RITCHIE – 13 APR 2022 (15H05) Residents along the Rietriver in Ritchie are evacuating their residences due to rising water levels. The area experienced heavy rainfall over the past few days. The public is advised to be vigilant.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 13 APR 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 13 APR 2022 (15H50) The City of Cape Town has assessed the progress of its new waste-to-energy project at the Coastal Park Landfill site in Muizenberg for the generation of electricity to ensure reliable and sustainable power to its residents. Urban waste management stated that it will be producing electricity from landfill gas with the practical completion of the works expected at the end of July 2022. The project is set to produce 2 megawatts. The costs to install the technology used for the process of extracting and converting the waste gas to energy would be reduced significantly than the current generation from Eskom.
  • CAPE TOWN – 13 APR 2022 (16H45) Residents of Kraaifontein have been without electricity due to cable theft and vandalism at Eskom’s Prospect Hill substation on Tuesday night, 12 April 2022. Eskom’s Western Cape Spokesperson, Kyle Cookson, stated that operators have been on-site attending to the problem. However, there is no estimation of when the power will be restored. Residents of Fisantekraal, Klipheuwel and Perdeberg are affected.
