SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 13 MAY 2022
• GQEBERHA/PORT ELIZABETH – 13 MAY 2022 (03H15) Hume International has requested the Government to implement a state of emergency concession for the Gqeberha port. Hume further requested that the Government lift the red tape to increase the movement of food and other goods. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has granted Hume’s request for the appointment of a secondary inspector for assignments to its facilities. This follows after Hume noted that the port does not have enough inspectors available to perform the duty required of Veterinary Inspectors under the Veterinary Procedural Notices (VPN). The increased measures followed after the flooding of Kwazulu-Natal and the Durban Port, which decreased economic activity due to reduced imports into the country.
• GQEBERHA/PORT ELIZABETH – 13 MAY 2022 (03H40) A 72-hour mobilisation operation has been activated by the South African Police Services (SAPS) in Bethelsdorp. The operation has been established following a shooting at a local civilian’s residence. Reports indicate that the suspects arrived in two vehicles and separated as they entered the residence, where they fired sporadically at the civilians. Approximately five people have been injured during the incident, and four received fatal injuries. The Police have registered four cases of murder and five cases of attempted murder. The public has been advised to provide any information regarding the apprehension of the suspects.
• IDUTYWA – 13 MAY 2022 (06H15) Protest expected in Idutywa by the Rural Development Council (RDC) today, 13 May 2022. This follows after the RDC have written letters to the Municipality regarding the poor road infrastructure. The Municipality failed to respond to the letters. The RDC is calling on the community to shut down all roads in Dutywa. Motorists are advised to avoid Dutywa. Police will be deployed to monitor the protest.
• MTHATHA – 13 MAY 2022 (08H00) Protest reported on the N2. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 13 MAY 2022 (09H35) Protest reported on Stanford Road/R368 in the vicinity of Helenvale. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 13 MAY 2022
• BLOEMFONTEIN – 13 MAY 2022 (06H45) The Bloemfontein High Court is expected to hear the National Prosecution Authority’s (NPA) restraint assets order application on the Iqbal Sharma and Gupta family assets today, 13 May 2022. The Islandsite Investments has filed an application for leave to appeal at the Supreme Court of Appeal in a bid to overturn the decision of the High Court in Bloemfontein on the legal representation of the Islandsite. The case relates to R24,9 million rand paid by the Free State Department of Agriculture for a feasibility study for potential farming projects in the province.

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 13 MAY 2022
• SOWETO – 12 MAY 2022 (19H30) Police have launched a search operation for five suspects that are involved in a shooting incident that occurred today, 12 May 2022, in Pimville zone 4. One person has been fatally shot. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage.
• SOWETO – 12 MAY 2022 (23H00) The Soweto based South African Police Services (SAPS) has announced the launch of a search operation for the apprehension of three suspects. The suspects have allegedly robbed the Shoprite Usave in Molapo of an undisclosed amount of cash. Furthermore, reports indicate that the suspects robbed the customers of their valuables as well. The public is advised to inform the SAPS of any information leading to the apprehension of the suspects.
• PRETORIA/TSHWANE – 12 MAY 2022 (23H55) The South African Police Services (SAPS) announced that they are set to commence an intelligence-driven search operation in Pretoria. The announcement follows after an alleged attempted kidnapping of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Spokesperson Sinawo Thambo’s partner on Monday, 09 May 2022. Reports indicate that Thambo jumped out of the speeding Uber after the driver failed to respond to her and drove away in oncoming traffic. Furthermore, Thambo has been injured due to her escaping the vehicle. A case of assault with intent to cause harm has been opened on Tuesday, 10 May 2022, as Thambo could not provide a J88 legal document to report her injuries to the SAPS on Monday. Thambo alleged the incident to be a kidnapping attempt due to the recent death of Hillary Gardee, a former Secretary-General of the EFF, on 03 May 2022. The Police are expected to investigate the Uber Company to apprehend the suspect.
• TEMBISA – 13 MAY 2022 (05H40) Protest reported on Olifantsfontein Road/R562 towards Mall of Tembisa. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 13 MAY 2022 (06H00) Protest expected by members affiliated with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) today, 13 May 2022, at the Tshwane House. The demonstrators are expected to gather at the open field on Madiba Street and Kgosi Mampuru Street from 09H00. The Tshwane Rapid Transit (TRT) Areyeng bus drivers are expected to protest to demand employment benefits, including medical and transport allowance. The following routes will be affected by the march, Kgosi Mampuru Street, Sophie De Bruyn Street, Bosman Street, Paul Kruger Street, Thabo Sehume Street, and Lilian Ngoyi Street. The demonstrators are expected to disperse from 13H00. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use the following alternative routes, Boom Street, Struben Street, Francis Baard Street, and Nana Sita Street. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• JOHANNESBURG – 13 MAY 2022 (08H40) The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has issued a warning to motorists following traffic disruptions along the M2 Motorway Eastbound and Westbound between New Goch Road and the Maritzburg off-ramp for a period of six weeks from Monday until Friday, between 09H00 and 15H00, due to an ongoing road resurfacing project. Sectional road closures will be implemented on the shoulder lanes and slow lanes in both directions of the M2 during roadworks. The resurfacing project is expected to be completed by Thursday, 30 June 2022. Gauteng Traffic Police will be deployed to the area to divert traffic. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 13 MAY 2022
• DURBAN – 12 MAY 2022 (19H15) eThekwini Municipality informed the public that all beaches remain close, until further notice, due to high levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in the water due to the recent floods. All water activities are prohibited. Beachgoers are urged to heed this warning as it can lead to outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera. Teams are currently repairing water and sanitation infrastructure, which was damaged by heavy rains. Water tests are performed daily, and the public will be notified as soon as E. coli levels drop to acceptable standards.
• DURBAN – 12 MAY 2022 (20H00) Shooting reported on Unit 2 Bridge in Bayview, Chatsworth. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area. Emergency services are on the scene.
• DURBAN – 12 MAY 2022 (22H20) Robbery reported on the R102 in the Northern Durban area. The suspect has allegedly attacked a truck driver in addition to confiscating pallets from his truck. The South African Police Services are on the scene and are expected to launch search operations to apprehend the suspect.
• NOTTINGHAM ROAD – 13 MAY 2022 (05H00) Road closure reported on the N3 northbound to Johannesburg near Nottingham Road. The closure follows an accident involving a Motor vehicle and a truck. Both lanes have been reported closed. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) are expected to be deployed to the area. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
• PINETOWN – 13 MAY 2022 (08H50) The Ethekwini Municipality Executive Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, is conducting an oversight visit a the Klaarwater power station. This flows after an explosion at the power station, which has led to power outages.

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 13 MAY 2022
• POLOKWANE – 13 MAY 2022 (00H15) The National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi announced that one of the suspects linked to the killings of the African National Congress (ANC) councillors has pending charges against him. Deputy Corporate Manager Jabulani Mashamaite has been accused of 121 counts of corruption, including money laundering and conspiracy to commit corruption at the Mogalakwena Municipality. The allegations are set to have occurred between 2016 and 2019. Reports indicate that the Municipality has been defrauded by approximately R15 million. The suspects are set to appear in court for their pre-trial hearing on 19 July 2022.
• LEPHALALE – 13 MAY 2022 (07H30) Protest reported in Marapong in the vicinity of Eskom Customer Network Centre (CNC) Lephalale and Matimba Power Station. The demonstrators are protesting in demand of employment. The demonstrators have barricaded all entrances of Marapong with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 13 MAY 2022
• NELSPRUIT/ MBOMBELA – 12 MAY 2022 (20H20) The Office of the Chief Whip of the African National Congress (ANC) Provincial Legislature has suspended Philemon Lukhele, who is one of the accused in the Hillary Gardee murder case. Lukhele has been suspended without pay pending an internal disciplinary hearing. Lukhele and two other accused are facing six charges, including kidnapping, sexual assault, murder, defeating the ends of justice, and conspiracy to commit murder.
• MALELANE – 13 MAY 2022 (09H30) The Nkomazi Local Municipality and the Provincial Government officials are expected to hold a meeting with residents on Monday, 16 May 2022, to discuss their service delivery grievances. This follows after a meeting held on Wednesday, 11 May 2022, between the residents and the municipality on electricity, water, and the poor condition of roads was unable to reach a conclusion.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 13 MAY 2022
• SWARTRUGGENS – 12 MAY 2022 (19H00) UPDATE The N4 between Swartruggens and Groot Marico has been reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (17H00) Road closure reported on the N4 between Swartruggens and Groot Marico. The road is closed due to a minibus accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.
• LICHTENBURG – 13 MAY 2022 (09H40) UPDATE SAMWU members are expected to hand over a memorandum of demands to the Municipality. (09H10) Protest reported at the Ditsobotla Local Municipality. The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) are protesting to demand the removal of the Acting Municipal Manager, Josephine Ledwaba, due to the grievances that have not been addressed. The demonstrators have blockaded the entrance of the Municipal building. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 13 MAY 2022
• KURUMAN – 12 MAY 2022 (19H45) Parents of learners at the Wrenchville Primary School have been demanding the transfer of the Principal and Deputy Principal to another school. This follows after ten teachers resigned due to poor working conditions, where they have allegedly been intimidated. The District Education Department held a meeting with parents at the school on Monday, 09 May 2022, where a memorandum was handed over.

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 13 MAY 2022
• CAPE TOWN – 12 MAY 2022 (20H00) The alleged Parliament arsonist, Zandile Mafe, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today, 12 May 2022. The defence team of Mafe, has called on the court to expedite the matter so that his trial can start. The case has been postponed to 09 June 2022. A crime scene and arson report are still outstanding, as well as the Parliament damage report.
• CAPE TOWN – 13 MAY 2022 (00H30) The Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court has postponed the trial of Bongani Ngadleka until 02 June 2022. The announcement has been made as the court claimed to be out of printing paper required for the accused. The paper is set to be required for documents that include information about the witness and general information about the case. The case has been postponed four times and withdrawn on 14 December 2021 prior to its reinstatement. The suspect allegedly killed Phelokazi Mqathanya on 02 May 2021 following an altercation between the two members behind Mwathanya’s home in Site C.
• CAPE TOWN – 13 MAY 2022 (06H20) The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Johan Jeffer, is expected to host a Justice Service Delivery Imbizo at Delft Civic Centre today, 13 May 2022, from 08H00. The Police third quarter crime statistics indicate that Delft is one of the areas with the highest number of sexual assault cases in the country. The Imbizo is part of the Department’s recently launched Year of the Community programme and will focus on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.
• CAPE TOWN – 13 MAY 2022 (07H20) The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, is expected to engage with the community illegally living on the railway infrastructure on the Cape Town central line in Langa today, 13 May 2022. Mbalula is expected to announce plans to relocate the community to the Monwabisi Recreational Centre in Langa and also assess the ongoing work to recover the central line.
