SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 14 FEB 2022

  • PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 14 FEB 2022 (06H10) Police are investigating a case of attempted murder after former Nelson Mandela Bay Councillor and African National Congress (ANC) member Mazwi Mini was shot at his KwaNobuhle residence in Kariegaon on Saturday night, 12 February 2022. Mini has been admitted to the hospital. Mini allegedly received threats at a pre branch general meeting (BGM) in Ward 42 last Sunday, 06 February 2022.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 14 FEB 2022 (07H10) Protest reported at the Nelson Mandela University North and South campuses. Students are protesting due to academic-related challenges. Demonstrators have called on the South African Students Congress (SASCO) to intervene. Demonstrators are barricading the entrances of the University. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are monitoring the situation.
  • QAMATA – 14 FEB 2022 (08H00) Protest reported on the R61 near Qamata Resort between Cofimvaba and Komani. Demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. Previously, community members protested due to service delivery in the area. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 14 FEB 2022

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 14 FEB 2022 (09H10) The Public Protector (PP) is expected to conduct a two-day visit to the Free State with the aim to promote quality service delivery and good governance. The PP is looking into strengthening ties and fostering collaboration and cooperation with organs of state. These include provincial legislatures, government departments, municipalities and traditional authorities. PP Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Deputy Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka will hold the first meeting today, 14 February 2022, in Bloemfontein with the Provincial Legislature Speaker, Ntombizanele Sifuba, alongside the Executive Council and senior government officials. The second meeting will be with the Provincial House of Traditional Leaders. On Tuesday, 15 February 2022, Mkhwebane and Gcaleka are expected to visit Harrismith to meet with the Makholokoe Traditional Council.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 14 FEB 2022

  • JOHANNESBURG – 14 FEB 2022 (03H30) Protest expected at the Short Street Park in the vicinity of the Pikitup Head Office in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, from 10H00 on Saturday, 19 February 2022. Members affiliated with Operation Dudula are expected to protest against illegal immigrants in South Africa. Authorities are expected to be deployed to monitor the situation. Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the duration of the demonstrations.
  • BOKSBURG – 14 FEB 2022 (06H30) Road closure reported on Leeuwpoort Street and Commissioner Street in Boksburg. The road is closed due to potholes. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
  • CENTURION – 14 FEB 2022 (06H50) Road closure reported on Quagga Road/ R55 near the Maunde Street intersection. The road is closed due to a taxi minibus accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services have been deployed to the scene.
  • ROODEPOORT – 14 FEB 2022 (10H20) Protest reported outside the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Meyer Steet. Gauteng Community Safety members are protesting in support of Palesa Mothokwa. Mothokwa is a victim of Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 14 FEB 2022 (11H00) The Gauteng Provincial Government announced that nine officials from the Gauteng Provincial Departments of Health and Infrastructure Development had been placed on precautionary suspension. This follows after a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) report on the awarding of contracts for the refurbishment of Anglo Gold Ashanti (AGA) Hospital. The West Rand-based hospital has been earmarked for the treatment of COVID-19 patients during the pandemic. The SIU report indicated that the lease of the AGA Hospital and the appointment of contractors have been irregular and unlawful and did not comply with procurement regulations. It also found that the initial cost estimate increased from some R50-million to at least R500-million.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 14 FEB 2022 (11H25) Protest reported at the Kutumela Molife primary school. Parents are protesting due to overcrowding at the school. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 14 FEB 2022 (12H00) Transnet suspended the operations of its Blue Train indefinitely today, 14 February 2022, following safety concerns. The rail agency stated that its decision is a precautionary measure following recent incidents. The Blue Train caught alight in February 2022 when a fire broke out in a coach while it was in for repairs in Koedoespoort. It also derailed at the Salvokop Train Yard in Pretoria in January 2022 and again at Union Station near Germiston in November 2021. The train will return to service after it has gone through a thorough technical assessment.
  • RANDFONTEIN – 14 FEB 2022 (13H50) UPDATE Road closure reported on the R28, Cecil Street and 2nd Street due to ongoing protest. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. (12H50) Additional students from surrounding schools are joining the protest at  Hoërskool Jan Viljoen. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are monitoring the scene. (12H00) MEC Lesufi stated that he will return to Hoërskool Jan Viljoen. Students and teachers involved in the racial incident are expected to be suspended. (10H45) MEC Lesufi is addressing demonstrators outside Hoërskool Jan Viljoen. Lesufi stated that the Police has launched an investigation into the racial matter at the school. Lesufi added that he is going to meet with the teachers as there is evidence that the teachers are treating students negatively. (10H00) Gauteng Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Education Panyaza Lesufi has arrived at Hoërskool Jan Viljoen for a meeting with the School Governing Body (SGB) and Principal over allegations of racism. Police have fired stun grenades outside the school to disperse the demonstrators.  (09H00) Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and students have joined the protest action. Police are attempting to disperse the demonstrators with a water cannon. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.  (07H50) Protest reported at Hoërskool Jan Viljoen on Main Reef Road in Randfontein. Parents are protesting due to a racially insensitive incident amongst students. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police and Private Security services are on the scene.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 14 FEB 2022 (14H50) Shooting reported on the M2 Crown Interchange. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use the M1 as an alternative route. Police have been dispatched.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 14 FEB 2022 (15H20) UPDATE Police have arrived at the Department of Education in an attempt to disperse demonstrations. (14H30) Violent demonstrations reported at the Department of Education. Parents are protesting due to learner placements. Reports indicated that staff members have been injured and the property has been damaged. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • SOWETO – 14 FEB 2022 (17H10) UPDATE A heightened Police visibility reported following a service delivery protest.  (08H30) Protest reported on Zakhele Drive near Morning Star Church in Snake Park. Demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. The reason for the protest is unknown at this stage. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Johannesburg Metropolitan Police (JMPD) are on the scene.
  • GERMISTON – 14 FEB 2022 (17H35) Cash in Transit (CIT) robbery in progress reported at the Meadowdale Mall. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 14 FEB 2022

  • VAN REENEN – 14 FEB 2022 (03H20) Road closure reported on the N3 between Van Reenen and the Tugela Toll Plaza in the vicinity of Pyramids Motel. The road has been closed to allow recovery operations following a heavy motor vehicle accident involving two trucks. Authorities are on the scene. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
  • PHOENIX – 14 FEB 2022 (06H20) The Phoenix Ubuntu Forum is expected to meet today, 14 February 2022. This follows after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s assurance that action will be taken over the July unrest. President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed the panel in 2021 to investigate the unrest. The panel found that the security services failed to anticipate and prevent the orchestrated violence.
  • ESTCOURT – 14 FEB 2022 (13H45) UPDATE The Magistrate Court has postponed the case to Thursday, 17 February 2022. The case has been postponed following Niehaus’s legal team that requested time to view footage of his alleged crime. (10H00) Protest reported outside the Estcourt Magistrates Court. Demonstrators are protesting in support of Carl Niehaus. Niehaus is joined by Mzwanele Manyi and the Pietermaritzburg Mkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA). Niehaus is appearing in court for organising a protest outside the Estcourt Prison where former President Jacob Zuma was being incarcerated for disobeying a Constitutional Court order.   • DURBAN – 14 FEB 2022 (17H40) Protest expected by the South Beach and North Beach Taxi Association on Tuesday, 15 February 2022. Taxi operators are expected to protest to demand the Municipality to release their impounded taxi’s. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are aware of the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 14 FEB 2022

  • PHALABORWA – 14 FEB 2022 (08H45) The African National Congress (ANC) Norman Mashabane Region has resolved to endorse its Chairperson Pule Shayi as ANC Limpopo Chairperson ahead of the party’s provincial elective conference in June 2022. ANC Norman Mashabane Region secretary Goodman Mtileni has raised concerns due to the ANC regions imposing their preferred candidates on behalf of other regions. Mtileni stated that the Norman Mashabane region will not support leaders who have been affected by the step aside resolution to contest for leadership in the upcoming provincial conference.
  • THABIZIMBI – 14 FEB 2022 (11H20) UPDATE EFF Deputy Secretary-General is addressing demonstrators outside the Thabizimbi Magistrate Court. The demonstrators are marching to the local Police Station to open a case against Police officers who obstruct justice and overlook Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) victims. (10H00) Protest reported at the Thabizimbi Magistrate Court. Members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are protesting against the bail application of a suspect accused of sexual assault. EFF Deputy Secretary-General is leading the protest. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.

  • MALALANE – 14 FEB 2022 (06H40) UPDATE Recovery is in progress on the N4 Eastbound approaching the R570 intersection in the vicinity of Malelane. The road remains closed to traffic. (03H40) Road closure reported on the N4 Eastbound approaching the R570 intersection in the vicinity of Malelane.   • POTCHEFSTROOM – 14 FEB 2022 (06H00) Protest expected by members affiliated with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) on Monday, 14 February 2022 from 10H00 at the Department of Education. The demonstrators are expected to protest following the Department’s failure to address demands raised by the union. The demonstrators are expected to disperse from 12H45.   • HARTBEESPOORT – 14 FEB 2022 (08H15) Protest reported on Van Der Hoff Weg/ R514 near Ten Rooms. Demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • LEDIG – 14 FEB 2022 (16H30) Protest reported on the R556 and the R565. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 14 FEB 2022

  • UPINGTON – 14 FEB 2022 (07H15) Members of the Upington Police Crime Prevention Unit arrested a 28-year-old suspected drug dealer. The Police confiscated a number of drugs at a residence. Police Spokesperson Omphile Masegela stated that the members followed up on information received about drugs allegedly being sold. The Police searched the premises and found the drugs hidden inside a drawer. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 14 FEB 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 14 FEB 2022 (00H10) Fire reported at several informal housing structures located on  Tokwana Street in Mfuleni, Cape Town. The reason for the fire is undetermined at this stage. Emergency services are on the scene. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling in the area.
  • GEORGE – 14 FEB 2022 (07H15) Protest reported at the Nelson Mandela University George campus. Students are protesting due to academic-related challenges.   • CAPE TOWN – 14 FEB 2022 (07H30) Shooting reported on Kokerboom Road in Lentegeur. One person has been shot and killed. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are on the scene. The area has been closed off for investigations.
  • CAPE TOWN – 14 FEB 2022 (07H40) Road closures reported in the surrounding area of the Cape Town City Hall. The road closures are due to the State of the Province Address at Cape Town City Hall today, 14 February 2022. The roads include Darling Street in both directions between Buitenkant Street and Lower Plein Street, Corporation Street between Longmarket Street and Darling Street and Parade Street at Caledon Street. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Traffic officials are on the scene to direct traffic.
  • CAPE TOWN – 14 FEB 2022 (09H20) Protest expected on Saturday, 19 February 2022 at 11H00 in Cape Town. The truckers convoy will be protesting in support of the Freedom World Wide Movement. Demonstrators are expected to gather at Brooklyn, M.P and Belville. Demonstrators will drive from N2/ Koeberg Road to R300 and return on the N1. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the protest. Police will be directing traffic flow.
  • CAPE TOWN – 14 FEB 2022 (10H30) Protest reported outside the Western Cape High Court. Demonstrators are protesting against the seismic survey. West coast fishing communities are opposing an urgent application from Searcher. The company is requesting the court to reconsider an interim interdict of the survey.   • CAPE TOWN – 14 FEB 2022 (11H30) Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubel is expected to participate in the State of the Nation Debate during a Joint Sitting of Parliament at the Cape Town City Hall at 14H00.
  • CAPE TOWN – 14 FEB 2022 (15H00) The Democratic Alliance (DA) Leader, John Steenhuisen, has announced that the party has tabled a motion of no confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet during the State of Nation Address (SONA) debate. Steenhuisen stated that this motion is in terms of Section 102 of the Constitution.
  • MOSSEL BAY – 14 FEB 2022 (15H40) UPDATE Emergency services have arrived at the Langeberg Mall, and fire has been contained. No injuries have been reported. The Langeberg Mall has re-opened for trade following the situation. Police will investigate the cause of the fire. (13H00) Fire reported at the Langeberg Mall. Reports indicate that three  Langeberg Bus Service have caught fire. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Emergency services have been dispatched.
