SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 15 APR 2022

  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 15 APR 2022 (06H20) The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has announced a planned power outage from Saturday, 23 April 2022, weather permitting, with an alternative date of Saturday, 07 May 2022, from 08H00 until 17H00. The power outage will allow the electrical department to replace the burnt power transformer at the  Swartkops, Matomela, Kwaford one and two lines. The affected areas will include Zwide, Kwazakhele, New Brighton, Struandale Industrial, and SATS. The Municipality stated that updates will be provided to the public as the situation progresses.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 15 APR 2022 (08H35) The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is expected to hold its Workers Day Rally on Sunday, 01 May 2022, at the Raymond Mhlaba Stadium. COSATU members are expected to hold a rally to recognise the union’s achievements. Motorists and members of the public are advised to be vigilant during the rally. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 15 APR 2022

  • FOURIESBURG – 14 APR 2022 (20H20) Taxi operators in the Eastern Free State have raised concerns over the state of roads as the Easter Holiday weekend approaches. The taxi operators indicated that the roads are not user-friendly, with an increase in the number of accidents, especially on the R26 Road between Fouriesburg and Ficksburg. Weather conditions form part of the safety hazards, as the rainfall decreases visibility. The taxi operators expect traffic to be congested and increase the risk of casualties.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 15 APR 2022

  • JOHANNESBURG – 14 APR 2022 (22H15) Protest reported on Hector Street in Rosettenville, Johannesburg South. Demonstrators are protesting against foreign nationals in the country. Local residents have alleged that Nigerian nationals are evicting South Africans from their homes. Demonstrators are burning tyres and debris on the roadway. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Authorities are aware of the situation.
  • SOWETO – 15 APR 2022 (08H30) UPDATE The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), Robert Malaudzi, has stated that no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire is expected to be investigated.  (07H20) Firefighters are on the scene in an attempt to contain the fire. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area. (05H30) Fire reported at the Eldorado Park Sub Station City Power. Reports indicate that the substation has caught fire. The reason for the fire is unknown at this stage. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Emergency services have been dispatched.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 15 APR 2022 (09H40) Road closure reported at the Daspoort Tunnel/R55 due to a truck that overturned. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Emergencies services have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 15 APR 2022

  • DURBAN – 14 APR 2022 (20H10) Premier Sihle Zikalala announced that the death toll in KwaZulu-Natal has risen from 306 fatalities on Wednesday, 13 April 2022, to 341 today, 14 April 2022. Zikalala provided an update on KwaZulu-Natal Government’s response to the flood disasters due to the heavy rains. A total of 40,723 people have been affected. The Premier also stated that 55 people have been injured, and more than 248 schools have been damaged by the floods. The extent of the damage is still being assessed. Umgeni Water and the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) will provide water tankers to residents. Technicians are working to restore the power supply in the affected areas.
  • PHOENIX – 14 APR 2022 (20H30) UPDATE Residents of Sandfern are protesting due to poor service delivery regarding continuous power outages in the area. (20H30) Protest reported on Fernham Drive and Redfern Cres in Unit 10 Phoenix. Demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area. Police have been dispatched to the scene.
  • DURBAN – 14 APR 2022 (21H25) Protest reported on the M25 near Dube village. Demonstrators are obstructing the roadway with burning tyres and debris. The protest is related to service delivery concerns in the area. Emergency services have been dispatched. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
  • DURBAN – 14 APR 2022 (22H00) Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has issued a notice to all Port of Durban customers and stakeholders providing an update on the status of the port post floods. Transnet has stated that structural repairs on Bayhead Road have commenced with the aim of re-establishing contraflow. This also includes further infills on the road leading towards Island View, providing four lanes. Transnet has stated that contractors have commenced with the delivery of material for the interim remediation. The operation is envisaged to be completed by the end of the Easter Weekend, on or before Tuesday, 19 April 2022. In addition, a joint initiative between law enforcement, Bluff Councillor Gavin Hegter and TNPA Precinct Managers has resolved that the Bluff route will be utilised by the trucking industry effective from Saturday, 15 April 2022. Municipal bylaws have been relaxed to allow the opening of the alternative route from the Harbour to the M7 for trucks transporting essential cargo, prioritising fuel, foodstuffs, pharmaceutical products and other essential cargo. The Port is fully operational for shipping for selected vessels as clean-up operations continue in a bid to fully restore normalcy. Relevant updates regarding the situation are expected to be released to the public as the matter progresses.
  • VERULAM – 15 APR 2022 (04H50) Protest reported at the corner of Todd Street and Russom Street in Grangetown, Verulam. A small group of demonstrators are burning tyres on the roadway at the old phase entrance. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Authorities are aware of the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 15 APR 2022

  • PIETERSBURG/POLOKWANE – 15 APR 2022 (08H20) The Polokwane High Court is expected to hand down its judgement on a Zimbabwean national, Andrea Imbayarwo, on Tuesday, 19 April 2022. Imbayarwo has been accused of killing a British national, Christine Robinson, at her Raditau Lodge in Thabazimbi on 30 July 2014. Imbayarwo also faces charges of housebreaking and contravention of the Immigration Act.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 15 APR 2022

  • BABERTON – 14 APR 2022 (19H45) Police have launched a search operation for a convict that escaped from the Baberton Correctional Services today, 14 April 2022. The convict has been detained on charges of sexual assault, theft, murder and robbery. The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and the Police are investigating the matter. The public is advised to be vigilant.
  • PANORAMA – 14 APR 2022 (23H55) UPDATE Emergency services have cleared the scene of debris. The N4 has been reopened to motorists. (22H20) Road closure reported on the N4 Westbound between Malaga Hotel and Arlie in the vicinity of Elandsvalley, Panorama. The road has been closed to traffic to allow recovery of a lost load after a truck overturned. Emergency services are on the scene. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 15 APR 2022

  • MAHIKENG – 15 APR 2022 (08H45) UPDATE A shopping mall and several shops have been affected by the fire that broke out. Firefights have contained the fire in the area.  (07H55) Fire reported on Station Road. Reports indicated that a building in the vicinity of the Waltloo store has caught fire. The reason for the fire is unknown at this stage. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Firefighters are on the scene in an attempt to contain the fire.
  • MAHIKENG – 15 APR 2022 (09H20) The Department of Health has announced its readiness to handle emergencies during the Easter holidays. The Member of the Executive Council (MEC), Madoda Sambatha, stated that the department has maximised resources to respond immediately to any emergency incidents. Sambatha added that the province has 63 operational ambulances, 10 ALS response units and 15 planned patient transport or disaster buses.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 15 APR 2022

  • POSTMASBURG – 14 APR 2022 (21H00) Police conducted an operation called reject and report stolen goods in Postmasburg today, 14 April 2022. Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Nomvuyo Makoloi stated that the operation was conducted through a partnership between Kolomela Mine, ZF Mgcawu District personnel, Provincial Flash and Station Corporate Communication and Danielskuil Police at the mine. The project concluded with a multi-disciplinary roadblock on the Postmasburg-Kathu Road whereby 191 vehicles and 432 persons have been stopped and searched. Seven fines have been issued for various offences amounting to R5,500.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 15 APR 2022

  • CAPE TOWN – 14 APR 2022 (21H40) Fire reported at the informal settlement area on Spine Road approaching Imperial Road in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. Reports indicate that several informal housing structures are currently on fire. The reason for the fire remains undetermined at this time. Emergency services have been notified of the incident. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
  • CAPE TOWN – 15 APR 2022 (04H30) Fire reported at a factory located at the corner of Jean Simonis Street and Fritz Spilhaus Avenue in Parow East, Cape Town. Reports indicate that a factory warehouse building is currently on fire. The reason for the fire remains undetermined at this time. The Fire Brigade and other emergency services are on the scene. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling in the area.
