SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 15 MAR 2022

  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 15 MAR 2022 (06H10) The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has announced a planned water outage today, 15 March 2022, from 08H00 until 17H00. The water outage will allow the Municipality to conduct maintenance on the City’s water infrastructure in an effort to reduce water losses. The affected areas include Arcadia, Holland Park and Kensington. The Municipality has stated that updates will be provided to the public as the situation progresses.
  • KARIEGA – 15 MAR 2022 (12H30) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is expected to hold its Uitenhage Massacre Commemoration Rally on Monday, 21 March 2022, from 12H00 at the Jabavu Sports Ground. The Secretary-General (SG), Marshall Dlamini, is expected to address during the rally.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 15 MAR 2022 (15H30) The Government has proposed to repurpose South Africa’s coal fleet towards nuclear energy to move away from fossil fuels over the next 30 years. The proposal is included in the Government’s national infrastructure plan 2050, published by Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia De Lille on Friday, 11 March 2022. The Government is considering repurposing and retrofitting the baseload coal fleet with advanced and innovative baseload nuclear energy systems that can be deployed inland, providing an opportunity for reskilling and retention of the existing coal workforce.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 15 MAR 2022

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 15 MAR 2022 (09H15) The Supreme Court of Appeal has ordered Letsemeng Municipality to pay its outstanding debt to Eskom its outstanding bill of R108.5-million. Letsemeng Local municipality was also directed by the Supreme Court to pay all arrear debts due and payable to Eskom per the terms of the acknowledgement of debt and payment plan concluded between the parties. The municipality is also expected to pay R5-million the National Treasury had made available to the municipality for the payment of its electricity debt.
  • PHUTHADITJHABA – 15 MAR 2022 (14H00) Two students are expected to appear at the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate court today, 15 March 2022, on charges of malicious damage to property and public violence. This follows after the Phuthaditjhaba Public Order Police have arrested the students during a protest at the University of Free State Qwa Qwa Campus on Monday, 14 March 2022. Police are monitoring the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 15 MAR 2022

  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 15 MAR 2022 (09H40) The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, has extended the National State of Disaster until Friday, 15 April 2022.
  • CENTURION – 15 MAR 2022 (12H00) UPDATE Violent demonstrations reported in the vicinity of Lyttelton Shopping Centre. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area. (11H10) Protest reported on the intersection of Basden Avenue and Rabie Street. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Basden Avenue at the M25 intersection has been closed. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 15 MAR 2022 (12H50) Protest expected on Monday, 21 March 2022 from 09H00. The demonstrators are expected to gather at Pieter Roos Park and march to Museum Africa. Illegal immigrants are expected to protest against the migrations laws of the country. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 15 MAR 2022 (13H15) Protest expected by members affiliated with the South African Informal Traders Alliance (SAITA) on Monday, 21 March 2022, from 13H00 at the Union Building. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand the Government to honour the Government Gazette that calls to waiver permit costs and remove excessive regulation procedures for small businesses. The demonstrators are expected to hand over a memorandum to the office of the President. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to the area.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 15 MAR 2022 (13H45) UPDATE  Members of NUMSA has delivered their memorandum of demands to Comair Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Glen Orsmond. Demonstrators are demanding Orsmond’s resignation after the South African Civil Aviation Authority suspended Comair’s operating licence indefinitely due to safety concerns. NUMSA has given Orsmond 7 days to respond. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (11H00) Demonstrations reported outside Comair offices. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (06H05) Protest expected by members affiliated with the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) outside the Comair offices in Kempton Park, Johannesburg today, 15 March 2022. This follows after the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) recently announced the suspension of Comair’s Air Operation Certificate (AOC) due to unsatisfactory safety standards. NUMSA is expected to stage a picket outside Comair offices to demand the immediate suspension of Comair Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Glenn Orsmond. Authorities are expected to be deployed to monitor the situation. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant when travelling in the area during the demonstration.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 15 MAR 2022 (14H45) ActionSA announced that it is analysing legal options to challenge the latest extension of the State of Disaster until 15 April 2022. This follows after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced plans to withdraw the State of Disaster and calls from medical experts to emulate the global trend of relaxing COVID-19 regulations. ActionSA is exploring legal action and collaboration with political parties.
  • CENTURION – 15 MAR 2022 (15H00) The South African agricultural industry association (Agri SA) is calling on the South African Government to suspend fuel levies to relieve pressure on food prices. The Ukraine and Russia conflict is impacting South Africa’s food security. Agri SA is requesting that the fuel levies be suspended to give farmers and consumers relief.
  • BENONI – 15 MAR 2022 (16H00) Motorists are advised to be vigilant when driving at night in Benoni. Criminals are known to place rocks and concrete blocks on the road. One incident occurred on Tom Jones Road between Harpur Avenue and Snake Road. The suspect has been caught and arrested. The other incident occurred on Great North Road between Oak Street and Mercury Street.
  • SPRINGS – 15 MAR 2022 (16H30) UPDATE Demonstrators have dispersed in KwaThema. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police are monitoring the situation.   • AKASIA – 15 MAR 2022 (16H45) UPDATE Demonstrators have dispersed at the Akasia municipal offices and Rosslyn Depot. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 15 MAR 2022

  • DURBAN – 15 MAR 2022 (06H00) Protest expected by members affiliated with the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) today, 15 Mach 2022, at the Dube Trade Port Cooperation (DTPC). The demonstrators are expected to protest due to the non-payment of salary increments for the 2020/21 financial year. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be dispatched.
  • LADYSMITH – 15 MAR 2022 (13H50) Road closure reported on Lyell Street in Ladysmith. Motorists using the N11 is being diverted to Murchison Street. The road is closed due to flooding in the area. The water level in the Central Business District between Alexandra Street and King Street is rising. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area.
  • DURBAN – 15 MAR 2022 (16H15) Road closure reported on Musgrave Road and Thomas Road in Musgrave. The road is closed due to a sinkhole. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
  • LANGKLOOF – 15 MAR 2022 (16H50) Road closure reported at Oliviershoek pass/ R74. The road is closed due to an active landslide affecting the roadway. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services have been deployed to the scene.
  • DURBAN – 15 MAR 2022 (18H15) Looting reported at the railway in Greenwood Park. A crowd of people are looting trains. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police and security services are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 15 MAR 2022

  • MANKWENG – 15 MAR 2022 (15H45) Residents in Mankweng have raised concerns over drivers of the e-hailing company Bolt. The residents allege that the drivers decline their requests for services when Bolt has given them promotions and that drivers increase their prices after 22H00, making them pay per passenger and not per ride. Bolt South Africa Regional Manager Gareth Taylor stated that Bolt rides are charged per trip. There is a single price calculated through the platform that is charged to the person who uses the service, and that is the only official cost of the trip.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 15 MAR 2022

  • WAKKERSTROOM – 15 MAR 2022 (08H00) Police Minister Bheki Cele and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, Jennifer Ntlatseng, are expected to host a community Imbizo on Friday, 18 March 2022, from 10H00 at the Esizameleni Sports field in Wakkerstroom. The two officials are expected to visit the area following high unemployment, crime and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases.
  • MIDDELBURG – 15 MAR 2022 (10H15) Protest reported at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. Employees are protesting over salary matters. The demonstrators have barricaded all entrances and exits of the Municipal area with burning tyres and debris. The affected routes include Walter Sisulu Street/R555, Hospitaal Road and Wanderers Avenue. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 15 MAR 2022

  • MORULENG – 15 MAR 2022 (04H00) Pilanesberg Platinum Mines, a division of South African platinum group metals (PGMs) producer Sedibelo Platinum Mines, has announced a planned renewable energy programme aimed at powering its mining operations. The company has stated that it has appointed a consortium including Juwi and Sturdee Energy as the preferred bidder to supply renewable energy. The parties have reportedly signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and are set to launch discussions on entering into a power purchase agreement (PPA). The plan includes purchasing solar and wind power to meet a 40 megawatt (mW) mine load via a wheeling arrangement from two separate sites in Limpopo and the Western Cape and the construction of a 35 mW solar park adjacent to the mining site. The PPA is set to include approximately 55% to 60% of the mine’s energy needs with effect from 2024, while the on-site photovoltaic (PV) installation is set for completion by 2026.
