  • EAST LONDON – 16 MAY 2022 (06H10) The newly elected Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) is expected to hold its meeting today, 16 May 2022, from 10H00 at the East London International Convention Centre.

  • FRANKFORT – 16 MAY 2022 (08H30) Premier Sisi Ntombela is expected to visit the Mafube Local Municipality to engage with community members during a Provincial Imbizo on Friday 20 May 2022, 10H00 at the Sunset Area, in Phomolong Section.
  • FRANKFORT – 16 MAY 2022 (08H40) Protest reported at the intersection of JJ Hadebe Street and Beckwith Street towards the R26. Taxi operators are protesting due to poor service delivery related to road infrastructure. The demonstrators have blockaded the road with taxis.   • DE DEUR – 16 MAY 2022 (07H25) Taxi disputes reported at the intersection of R551 and R82. Reports indicate that the taxi associations are engaged in an exchange of fire. Previous reports indicate that the Meyerton Taxi Association (MATA) and Faraday Taxi Association have ongoing disputes due to taxi routes. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • VANDERBIJLPARK – 16 MAY 2022 (07H40) Protest reported on Nobel Boulevard near Nhlapo Scrap Metal. The demonstrators have blockaded the road towards ArcelorMittal South Africa. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • GERMISTON – 16 MAY 2022 (08H40) Armed robbery and attempted Automated Teller Machine (ATM) bombing reported at the Vooma filling station on Rietfontein Road. Unidentified suspects have attempted to bomb an ATM during an armed robbery at the filling station. No injuries have been reported. The suspects have fled the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • BRONKHORSTSPRUIT – 16 MAY 2022 (11H40) UPDATE Demonstrations reported on Church Street. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (08H40) Demonstrations reported in the vicinity of Afgri Bronkhorstspruit Silo. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (06H00) Protest expected at the Municipality Offices in Bronkhorstspruit today, 16 May 2022. Community members are expected to embark on a mass demonstration to protest against service delivery issues relating to the alleged contaminated water in the area. Participants are expected to conduct a shutdown of the town. Therefore, all business outlets have been urged to suspend operations for the duration of the day. Demonstrators are also expected to deliver a Memorandum of Demands (MoD) to municipality officials during the protest. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant when travelling in affected areas as ground travel disruptions are likely. Authorities are expected to monitor the event.
  • SANDTON – 16 MAY 2022 (14H40) Eskom Chief Operating Officer (COO), Jan Oberholzer, stated that the power utility is currently experiencing a diesel shortage. Eskom is using two million litres of diesel a day, and its next delivery is scheduled for 24 May 2022. Oberholzer stated that loadshedding is expected to be increased to Stage 4 in the event of further breakdowns to manage its diesel reserves. In addition to implementing loadshedding throughout the day.
  • SANDTON – 16 MAY 2022 (14H45) Eskom announced the implementation of Stage 4 loadshedding from 17H00 until 22H00 today, 16 May 2022. Unit two at the Kusile Power Sation tripped. The unit has returned to service. However, it will slowly load up to capacity during the night. This morning a generating unit at Hendrina, Tutuka and Kriel Power Stations have been returned to service, while a unit each at Arnot Power Station has been taken offline for repairs.
  • MIDRAND – 16 MAY 2022 (16H50) Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago has announced that UBank has been placed under curatorship with immediate effect. UBank mainly targets lower-income blue-collar workers in the mining industry. The UBank will continue to operate. The Ubank had challenges over the years, and its capital adequacy has gone down by 3%, below the average of 20%.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 16 MAY 2022 (17H30) UPDATE Demonstrators are throwing stones at passing vehicles on the M5 at the Fountains Circle. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is protesting due to the alleged unfair dismissal of 5 UNISA employees. The employees have been dismissed after instigating protest actions at graduation ceremonies. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.

  • LOUWSBURG – 16 MAY 2022 (06H30) Protest reported on the R69. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • RICHARDS BAY – 16 MAY 2022 (06H40) Protest reported at Mandlazini crossing towards Richards Bay Minerals. The reason for the protest is unknown at this stage. The demonstrators have blockaded the road with two buses and a truck. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • EZINQOLENI – 16 MAY 2022 (07H00) Protest reported on the road between Port Edward and Ezinqoleni. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris.   • STANGER – 16 MAY 2022 (09H00) Protest reported at the intersection of Mahatma Ghandi Street and Chief Albert Luthuli Street.   • BOBOYI – 16 MAY 2022 (10H45) Protest reported on the N2 at the intersection of D201 Kulucrete Concrete turnoff. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris.   • DURBAN – 16 MAY 2022 (15H00) Police have launched an investigation into the murder of two security officers from Imvula Security on Amanzimtoti Road, KwaMashu, today, 16 May 2022. The three security officers were guarding employees who were repairing an electrical fault in the area. One security guard was critically injured and transported to the hospital. The suspects robbed the security officers of their firearms and fled the scene. The electricity department employees were unharmed.
  • ESTCOURT – 16 MAY 2022 (16H20) UPDATE The Estcourt Magistrate’s Court has postponed the case against former MKMVA Spokesperson Carl Niehaus to 27 June 2022. The court is expected to provide a ruling on the application for a discharge at the court proceedings. (05H05) Former Spokesperson of the Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans’ Association (MKMVA), Carl Niehaus, is expected to appear in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court from today, 16 May, until Tuesday, 17 May 2022. Niehaus will appear in court for the alleged contravention of COVID-19 regulations. The Carl Niehaus Support Group is expected to protest outside the court during the proceedings.

  • MUSINA – 16 MAY 2022 (15H15) UPDATE Police are attempting to disperse the demonstrators with rubber bullets. Motorists are advised to avoid the N1 in Musina. Two youths have been admitted to the hospital after being injured by the rubber bullets. (06H55) Protest reported on the N1 in Musina.   • STANDERTON – 16 MAY 2022 (12H30) Protest reported on the R23 near Standerton. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris.   • MIDDELBURG – 16 MAY 2022 (14H25) Protest reported at the Municipality Civic Centre. Employees are protesting due to a labour dispute. The Municipality office is closed to the public until further notice. This follows after the strike organiser, Kgosi Makwati, has been suspended after a service delivery meeting that was disrupted. SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 16 MAY 2022

  • KLERKSDORP – 16 MAY 2022 (12H50) The Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court is expected to hear the bail application of Paul Ndamoyi on Wednesday, 18 May 2022. This follows after Ndamoyi was arrested for the murder of Thabo Ntsie. Ndamoyi and Ntsie have been alleged to be members of the same gang known as Al Qaeda. Ndamoyi has been charged with murder and unlawful possession of ammunition.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 16 MAY 2022

  • KIMBERLEY – 16 MAY 2022 (12H55) The Department of Roads and Public Works has announced that it has opened an emergency lane on the R31 in the vicinity of the Wildebeeskuil Pan for light motor vehicles. The Department stated that heavy motor vehicles should remain using the detour routes through Riverton and Windsorton. The Department is expected to re-evaluate the opening of the section for heavy vehicles. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.

  • CAPE TOWN – 16 MAY 2022 (11H00) Protest reported on Main Road/M63 in the vicinity of Houtbay Main Road Clinic. Municipal employees are protesting due to labour-related matters.   • CAPE TWON – 16 MAY 2022 (12H15) Protest reported outside the Table View Police Station. The demonstrators are protesting to demand the station commander to provide updates on allegations against a Nigerian national from Parklands who has been accused of sexual assault.   • STELLENBOSCH – 16 MAY 2022 (15H50) UPDATE The student involved in the racial incident has been suspended until further notice. An investigation has been launched into the matter to determine the final outcome. (15H25) Students are demanding that the student involved in the racial incident over the weekend be expelled by Friday, 20 May 2022. (13H30) Peaceful protest reported on Bosman Street at Huis Marais at the Stellenbosch University. Students are protesting against racism. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.
