SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 20 MAY 2022
• MTHATHA – 20 MAY 2022 (06H50) Protest reported on the R61 between Mthatha and Ngcobo in the vicinity of Sgubudwini village. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• MOUNT FRERE – 20 MAY 2022 (13H45) The South African Weather Services (SAWS) announced that the first snowfall is expected in Umzimvubu and Mount Ayliff in the Eastern Cape. Snowfall is expected to start around midday, 20 May 2022, and is expected to continue until midnight Saturday evening, 21 May 2022. Meanwhile, the SAWS has issued a level 5 warning for disruptive rain for several other parts of the Eastern Cape. Flooding of roads, formal/informal settlements, low-lying bridges, areas, and infrastructure is expected. Disruptions to traffic and municipal services can be expected. The areas that will be affected include Raymond Mhlaba, Fort Beaufort, Ngqushwa, Peddie, Buffalo City, East London, Ndlambe, Port Alfred, Blue Crane Route and Somerset East.

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 20 MAY 2022
• THEUNISSEN – 20 MAY 2022 (16H30) A warrant of arrest has been issued for the Mayor of Masilonyana Local Municipality after she failed to appear in court on Thursday, 19 May 2022. Modise allegedly had an official trip scheduled and is expected to return on Monday, 23 May 2022. The warrant of arrest will be held over until her next court appearance on 26 May 2022. Modise with co-accused is charged with inciting violence at protests in Makeleketla and Masilo in 2021.

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 20 MAY 2022
• JOHANNESBURG – 20 MAY 2022 (01H40) Eskom has announced that efforts are underway to increase security at all power stations across the country following two recent acts of suspected sabotage during the preceding week. Eskom Spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha has stated that the most recent incident at the Tutuka Power Station led to a three-day delay in returning the unit to service. Mantshantsha noted that another incident had been detected the same day on a turbine system where a pipe had been severed and removed with a power tool. Eskom has alleged that the incidents are deliberate acts of sabotage executed by criminal elements who had access to these sites. Eskom has since laid criminal charges with Police.
• CARLETONVILLE – 20 MAY 2022 (06H15) The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) are expected to hold a meeting at the Driefontein gold mine in Carletonville today, 20 May 2022, from 10H00. The unions are expected to discuss progress made in their ongoing strike. The unions will also discuss how they will proceed with the strike.
• RANDBURG – 20 MAY 2022 (08H30) Bombing reported at the Shell filling station on New Canada Road. Reports indicate that unidentified suspects have bombed two automatic teller machines (ATM). The suspects have fled the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• SOWETO – 20 MAY 2022 (08H50) Protest expected by the members of the Forgotten Nation at the Department of Labour from 10H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand jobs and demand an employment database to be created for citizens over the age of 35. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• GA-RANKUWA – 20 MAY 2022 (09H10) Protest expected by the members of the Forgotten Nation at the Department of Employment and Labour in Zone 5 from 10H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand jobs and demand an employment database to be created for citizens over the age of 35. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• CENTURION – 20 MAY 2022 (12H20) Peaceful protest reported on the R55. Community members and Tshwane Dudula Movement are marching against poor service delivery and the high crime rate in the area. The demonstrators have obstructed the road. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.
• TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 20 MAY 2022 (13H15) Protest reported outside the University of South Africa (UNISA). Members affiliated with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) are protesting against the unfair dismissal of shop stewards. The demonstrators have obstructed the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
• SANDTON – 20 MAY 2022 (14H15) Eskom announced the implementation of stage 2 loadshedding from 05H00 until 22H00 today, 20 May, until Sunday, 22 May 2022. This is due to a continued shortage of generation capacity. Eskom will continue to monitor the situations and adjust and communicate any changes.
• VEREENIGING – 20 MAY 2022 (15H10) UPDATE Demonstrators have dispersed in Vereeniging Central Business District (CBD). Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (12H30) The demonstrators have handed over a memorandum of demands to the officials at Emfuleni Municipality and local Police. The demonstrators have obstructed the area. (06H00) Peaceful protest expected on Voortrekker Street in the Vereeniging Central Business District (CBD) between 08H00 and 10H00 today, 20 May 2022. Members of the Vereeniging Business Cooperation (VBC) are expected to conduct a peaceful march throughout the business district of Vereeniging. The demonstration aims to demand improved service delivery from the Emfuleni Local Municipality. The South African Police Service (SAPS) Sector Commander of Vereeniging has confirmed that Police officers are expected to maintain a full presence on Voortrekker Street for the duration of the march. Police are not expected to close any roads or intersections within the CBD during the demonstration. However, motorists are advised of possible ground travel disruptions.
• SOWETO – 20 MAY 2022 (16H00) Police have arrested a suspect in Protea Glen today, 20 May 2022, after it was discovered that the vehicle he was travelling in with two other suspects was involved in a hijacking incident at Springs. The Police ordered the suspects to stop. However, a chase ensued, and the suspects opened fire on the Police. The suspects accidentally wounded a person alongside the road. The suspects then lost control of the vehicle and crashed. Two suspects fled the scene, and one suspect was arrested.
• LENASIA – 20 MAY 2022 (17H40) Cash in Transit (CIT) robbery reported on the N12 near Lenasia. Suspects robbed a Fidelity armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money. A vehicle is on fire. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
• SANDTON – 20 MAY 2022 (18H20) Eskom announced the extension of loadshedding stage 2 from 08H00 until 22H00 from Saturday, 21 May until Sunday, 22 May 2022. This is to preserve the current diesel stock and an attempt to contain the amount of loadshedding. Eskom is expecting a ship containing diesel supplies on Monday, 23 May 2022. A single unit at the Duvha Power Station tripped this afternoon, and a unit each at the Tutuka and Medupi Power Stations has returned to service. Three generation units are expected to return to service on Saturday, 21 May 2022. However, it will not be sufficient to meet the high demand during the cold fort over the weekend.

• NEW GERMANY – 20 MAY 2022 (06H20) Protest reported on Otto Volek Road towards Valley View Road. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• NEWCASTLE – 20 MAY 2022 (08H55) Protest reported on the N11 between Newcastle and Volksrust in the vicinity of Ingogo. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• NEWLANDS EAST – 20 MAY 2022 (12H40) Protest reported on Riverhorse Road. The demonstrators are protesting against foreign nationals employed in the area. The demonstrators have obstructed the road. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police have been dispatched.
• PIETERMARITZBURG – 20 MAY 2022 (14H00) Road closure reported on the N3 at the Peter Brown Drive intersection. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene. Recovery is in progress.
• DURBAN – 20 MAY 2022 (14H45) Police have launched an investigation into clashes between security officers and learners at Effingham Secondary School in Redhill on Thursday, 19 May 2022. The cause of the clashes is unknown at this stage. It is alleged that on Thursday after school, private security was called by the school due to conflict between learners. Allegedly, rubber bullets and tear gas were fired. It is also alleged that security officers assaulted a female learner and a security officer pointed a weapon at another learner. KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education Member of Executive Council (MEC), Kwazi Mshengu, has assigned a two-member team to attend to the situation of police brutality against learners at Effingham Secondary. Classes have been suspended at Effingham Secondary School until Monday, 23 May 2022.
• KWAMASHU – 20 MAY 2022 (17H40) Shooting reported near KweSethu High School, F Section, in KwaMashu. Four people have been shot. The reason for the shooting is unknown. Emergency services are on the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

• VALDEZIA – 20 MAY 2022 (12H10) UPDATE Motorists are advised to avoid the Khangela and Matsilele Road due to an ongoing protest. Motorists travelling to Bungeni, Elim, Thohoyandou, and Malamulele are advised to use alternative routes. (08H10) Protest reported in Valdezia. Taxi operators are protesting due to poor service delivery related to poor road infrastructure. The demonstrators have obstructed the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police have been dispatched.

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 20 MAY 2022
• CAROLINA – 20 MAY 2022 (06H05) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit the Gert Sibande District Municipality today, 20 May 2022, at the Dutch Reformed Church from 08H00 to engage with community members during a Presidential Imbizo. Ramaphosa is expected to conduct an oversight visit to assess progress on service delivery in line with the One District, One Plan approach of the District Development Model (DDM).
• NELSPRUIT/MBOMBELA – 20 MAY 2022 (11H25) Protest expected by the members affiliated with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) at the Mpumalanga High Court on Monday, 30 May 2022, from 09H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand justice for NEHAWU Shopsteward, Tebogo Matsane, who was killed. The High court is expected to hand over its judgement on the case. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to the area.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 20 MAY 2022
• MAHIKENG – 20 MAY 2022 (07H20) Protest expected by community members of Mahikeng on Monday, 30 May 2022, at the Mahikeng Local Municipality. Community members are expected to protest against the irregular employment of General Workers in the Municipality. The demonstrators are expected to hand over a memorandum of grievances. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to the area.
• DEELPAN – 20 MAY 2022 (11H10) The Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Pinky Kekana, along with Deputy Minister of Health, Sibongiseni Dlhomo, Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Obed Bapela and Deputy Minister of Human Settlement, Pamela Tshwete, are expected to visit Deelpan in the Tswaing Local Municipality on Tuesday, 24 May 2022. The Government officials are expected to monitor and assess the extent of the damage caused by the floods in the area. The Disaster Management Team is expected to brief the delegation on plans for the area and conduct a walk-about in the village.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 20 MAY 2022
• HARTSWATER – 20 MAY 2022 (10H40) The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA), the Health and Other Services Personnel Trade Union of South Africa (HOSPERSA) and the Public Servants Association (PSA) has announced that members affiliated with the unions will work from 07H00 until 19H00. This follows after nurse at Connie Vorster Hospital vowed to limit their working hours to 12 hours per day until staff shortages are addressed.

• CAPE TOWN – 20 MAY 2022 (07H50) Protest reported on Baden Powell Drive in the vicinity of Monwabisi Resort in Khayelitsha. Previous demonstrations have been related to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have obstructed the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• STELLENBOSCH – 20 MAY 2022 (15H20) Protest reported at the University of Stellenbosch. The students are expected to march to the campus’ Rooiplein. Students are protesting due to a racially insensitive incident between two students. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.
