  • PORT ST JOHNS – 21 APR 2022 (06H20) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to visit Port St Johns today, 21 April 2022, at 10H00 to offer support to affected communities and assess the response of Government and civil society to the situation. This follows after the recent flooding in the area that caused deaths and infrastructure damage.
  • KIRKWOOD – 21 APR 2022 (10H50) UPDATE Road closure reported on Main street/ R336. Farmworkers are protesting to demand wage increases. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (10H10) Protest reported on Main Street/ R336 in the vicinity of SPAR Dagbreek. Previous demonstrations have been related to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • GQEBERHA/ PORT ELIZABETH – 21 APR 2022 (15H00) Protest reported at the Motherwell Community Health Centre in Motherwell 4, Gqeberha. A large group of health workers are demonstrating outside the health centre as part of an ongoing tools down protest. The nurses have raised concerns regarding a staff shortage at the facility. Ground travel disruptions are expected in the area of the demonstration. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling in the area.

The campaign is about the renewal of the organisation’s social contract with the people.

  • JOHANNESBURG – 21 APR 2022 (06H00) Protest expected at the Amic Deck today, 21 April 2022, from 16H30. The demonstrators are expected to engage in flag demonstrations in support of the Al-Aqsa mosque in Palestine. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • RANDFONTEIN – 21 APR 2022 (06H05) Operation Dudula is expected to hold a meeting at Mohlakeng Four Square taxi rank today, 21 April 2022, from 17H00. The members are expected to discuss the launch of a branch in the area. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the meeting. Police are expected to monitor the area.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 21 APR 2022 (07H00) Protest expected by the members affiliated with the South African Federation of Trade Union (SAFTU) on Monday, 25 April 2022, at the Union Buildings from 12H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest against budget cuts, neoliberalism and attacks on collective bargaining, against Eskom tariffs, against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and demand permanent employment for Community Work Programme (CWP), Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers and a basic income grant of R1,500 for unemployed citizens. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • ROODEPOORT – 21 APR 2022 (07H30) Protest reported on the R512 in Cosmo City Business Park . The demonstrators are protesting against foreign national employees. The demonstrators have blocked the foreign national employees from entering the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 21 APR 2022 (08H30) The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Phalatsi, is expected to deliver the State of the City Address today, 21 April 2022, from 10H00. Road closures are expected in the vicinity of the City Council to conduct a parade and a motorcade. The following routes will be affected Harrison Street, Jorissen Street, Rissik Street, De Korte Street, Civic Boulevard and Hoofd Street. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 21 APR 2022 (09H00) Protest expected by members affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) today, 21 April 2022, at the City Council of Johannesburg. SAMWU members are expected to march to the Council to demand salary increases. The demonstrators are expected to hand over their memorandum of demands. The following routes are expected to be affected by the march, Harrison Street, Jorissen Street, Rissik Street, De Korte Street, Civic Boulevard and Hoofd Street. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 21 APR 2022 (09H30) The Commander in Chief (CIC), Julius Malema, of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), is expected to address the EFF Freedom Day Rally on Wednesday, 27 April 2022, from 11H00 at the Moretele View Park in Mamelodi.
  • SANDTON – 21 APR 2022 (11H30) Protest expected by members affiliated with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) on Friday, 22 April 2022, at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton at 10H00. The demonstrators are expected to gather at George Lee Park from 09H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand a wage increase of R1000 for surface and underground workers and a 6% increase for artisans, miners and officials. The demonstrators are expected to hand over a memorandum of demand. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 21 APR 2022 (12H45) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to receive President Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi of Botswana on Friday, 22 April 2022, for the Bi-National Commission of Cooperation (BNC) session between the Republic of South Africa and the Republic of Botswana, which will be held at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) conference centre from 10H00. The 5th Session of the BNC will evaluate progress on all outstanding projects and the implementation of commitments of the 4th BNC and to further reaffirm the bilateral relations and enhance cooperation within the framework of the BNC. The BNC will also provide a platform to exchange views on international issues of mutual interest.
  • SOWETO – 21 APR 2022 (13H30) Protest reported on Main Road between Buckingham Avenue and Milnerton Street in the vicinity of Eldorado Park, Soweto. Residents are blockading the roadway in protest against ongoing electricity disruptions in the area. This follows a recent fire at a local substation. Demonstrators are demanding improved service delivery. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Authorities are on the scene.
  • SANDTON – 21 APR 2022 (13H15) Eskom has announced that loadshedding is scheduled to be reduced to Stage 2 at 22H00 today, 21 April 2022, and remain in force until Friday evening, 22 April 2022. This follows after a generation unit each at the Majuba, Matimba and the Arnot power stations have returned to service, while another unit at the Tutuka power station has been shut down for repairs. An additional two units are also set to return to service during the following 24 hours. This has allowed Eskom to reduce loadshedding to Stage 2 and continue to adjust the stages of loadshedding in accordance with the level of breakdowns.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 21 APR 2022 (16H10) Parliament has announced plans to establish an ad-hoc committee to oversee the national state of disaster declared in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape provinces following the adverse effects of recent floodings. The National Assembly is expected to establish the committee during a sitting scheduled for Tuesday, 26 April 2022, at 12H00. This follows as President Cyril Ramaphosa called for a joint sitting of Parliament to outline the Government’s response efforts.
  • VANDERBIJLPARK – 21 APR 2022 (16H35) Gauteng Police have confirmed the arrests of three suspects, including a security officer, in connection to the recent alleged bombing of a power substation belonging to the Municipality. The security officer on duty had allegedly provided access to three suspects, who informed the officer that they had been employed to work at the substation. After gaining access to the substation, the three suspects reportedly detonated a bomb inside the facility. An investigation conducted by Police has led to the arrest of the security officer and the two other suspects. Police are searching for two remaining suspects. The three suspects are expected to appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrates Court on Friday, 22 April 2022.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 21 APR 2022 (17H00) Glencore has declared force majeure on its shipment of cobalt hydroxide from South Africa due to excessive flooding in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. This follows as the adverse flooding has halted exports from the Durban Port, severely affecting logistical operations. Durban acts as Glencore’s main port for exports of cobalt hydroxide, with the company’s mining activity taking place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Reports have indicated that cobalt shipment is not expected to resume until July 2022. The mining company has stated that relevant updates will be issued to the public as the situation progresses.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 21 APR 2022

  • DURBAN – 21 APR 2022 (12H20) UPDATE Malema has arrived at the Kwamamsuthu informal settlement on Quarry Road to hand over food parcels and supplies. (06H10) Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema is expected to visit the province today, 21 April 2022, following the floods, which have led to the death of 448 deaths and infrastructure damage. Malema is expected to hand over food parcels and blankets to 500 families in Ward 25, Clare Estate, from 11H00.
  • BLACKBURN – 21 APR 2022 (13H20) Protest reported on the N2 in the vicinity of Sibaya Drive in Blackburn. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Previous demonstrations have been related to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • UMGABABA – 21 APR 2022 (15H40) Protest reported on the R102 in the vicinity of the Umgababa rural community area between Umkomaas and Winkelspruit. Community members have barricaded the roadway with debris and are demanding the delivery of clean water. Motorists are advised that the road is closed to traffic. Authorities are aware of the matter.
  • DURBAN – 21 APR 2022 (16H25) KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape authorities have confirmed that the number of fatalities recorded during the recent floodings in the provinces has been revised down to 435. The revision follows after autopsies found that four people had died of gunshot wounds and nine others of natural causes.
  • RICHARDS BAY – 21 APR 2022 (17H30) Transnet has announced plans to issue a tender for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to be established at the Richards Bay port in KwaZulu-Natal. Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has stated that 19 companies have expressed interest in various aspects of the project to date, including the projects’ design, development, construction, financing and operation. The companies reportedly include significant developers and operators of gas infrastructure in South Africa, Europe, Asia, America, and the Middle East. The terminal is expected to be constructed in the South Dunes Precinct of the Richards Bay port. TNPA Richards Bay Port Manager Dennis Mqadi has stated that the LNG terminal is set to develop South Africa’s gas market as an alternative source of energy. Mqadi has further noted that TNPA aims to have the terminal fully operational by 2026.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 21 APR 2022

  • LEVUBU – 21 APR 2022 (14H15) The Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has confirmed the arrests of two suspects in connection with the recent deaths of two people during a robbery incident at an agricultural holding situation in Levubu outside Thohoyandou. Reports indicate that a farmer and his spouse died after their farmhouse had allegedly been set on fire during a house robbery incident. The suspects have been apprehended following the launch of a 72-hour operation by a task team and the Police in Levubu to locate and apprehend the suspects. Preliminary Police investigations indicate that the deceased had been accosted by the suspects who looted the farmhouse and seized several items, including firearms, before setting the house on fire and fleeing the scene. A search operation for the remaining suspect is ongoing.

  • CAPE TOWN – 21 APR 2022 (10H30) Liberty Promenade Shopping Centre is conducting a full emergency evacuation drill. The shopping centre’s management has released a statement indicating that the drill aims to ensure the safety and security of its customers. Liberty Promenade conducts regular simulation evacuations to ensure all emergency personnel are well versed in their roles. The shopping centre is expected to resume trade shortly.
  • CAPE TOWN – 21 APR 2022 (15H20) Western Cape Premier Alan Winde is expected to announce amendments to the provincial Cabinet following the resignation of Education Member of Executive Council (MEC) Debbie Schäfer today, 21 April 2022. Winde has since released a statement indicating his acceptance of Schäfer’s resignation. Premier Winde further stated that he is expected to announce changes to the provincial Cabinet tomorrow, 22 April 2022, following further deliberations on the matter. Schäfer is scheduled to vacate office on 15 May 2022.
