SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 22 APR 2022

  • GQEBERHA/ PORT ELIZABETH – 22 APR 2022 (14H10) Healthcare workers in Gqeberha have vowed to continue demonstrations to suspend operations at health clinics in Motherwell. Employees are demanding that the National Government place the Eastern Cape Health Department under administration. The protest action has been ongoing since Tuesday, 19 April 2022. Approximately 100 health workers recently gathered at the Motherwell Healthcare Centre to present their grievances to the unions. National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) Regional Secretary Samkelo Msila has alleged that the current Head of Department (HoD) has failed to improve operations at the Department since her appointment in 2021. Eastern Cape Department of Health Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo is yet to respond to the matter.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 22 APR 2022

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 APR 2022 (10H10) Protest reported outside Paradise Hall. Members affiliated with the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the South African Municipal Union (SAMWU) have gathered ahead of a march to the Bram Fischer Building. The demonstrators are protesting due to unpaid and outstanding overtime payments. The demonstrators are expected to hand over a memorandum of demands to the Executive Mayor of Mangaung, Mxolisi Siyonzana and march to the O.R Tambo Building to hand over a memorandum of demands to Premier Sisi Ntombela. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 APR 2022 (14H40) The African National Congress (ANC) has announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to launch the Letsema campaign at 10H00 on Saturday, 23 April 2022. During the launching ceremony, President Ramaphosa is expected to outline the objectives of the Letsema Campaign, focusing on the renewal of the organisation’s social contract with the public. The launch is scheduled to occur at the Toka Primary School Grounds, Turflaagte, Bloemfontein.

  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 22 APR 2022 (06H00) The Director-General of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Doctor Mashabane, is expected to address the media on the state of Courts in the KwaZulu-Natal province following recent floods today, 22 April 2022, from 06H00. This follows after Mashabane visited the Province on Wednesday, 20 April 2022, to assess various courts conditions.
  • SOWETO – 22 APR 2022 (07H40) Protest reported at the intersection of Golden Highway/R555 and East Street in Devland. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have obstructed the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • ROODEPOORT – 22 APR 2022 (08H00) Protest reported at Cosmo City Business Park towards Malibongwe Drive/R512. The demonstrators are protesting against employed foreign nationals. The demonstrators have obstructed the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • ROODEPOORT – 22 APR 2022 (08H40) Protest reported at the intersection of Christiaan de Wet Road and Pioneer Avenue. University of South Africa (UNISA) employees are protesting due to salary disputes. The demonstrators have obstructed the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • SANDTON – 22 APR 2022 (09H05) UPDATE The NUM and AMCU have met with Sibanye-Stillwater management to discuss the union’s demands. NUM and AMCU leadership has announced the suspension of the protest for today, 22 April 2022, pending the outcome of the meeting. (06H25) Protest expected by members affiliated with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) today, 21 April 2022, at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton at 10H00. The demonstrators are expected to gather at George Lee Park from 09H00. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand a wage increase of R1000 for surface and underground workers and a 6% increase for artisans, miners and officials. The demonstrators are expected to hand over a memorandum of demand. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 22 APR 2022 (09H15) UPDATE Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi has arrived in the country ahead of the Binational Commission meeting. (06H10) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to receive President Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi of Botswana today, 22 April 2022, for the Bi-National Commission of Cooperation (BNC) session between the Republic of South Africa and the Republic of Botswana, which will be held at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) conference centre from 10H00. The 5th Session of the BNC will evaluate progress on all outstanding projects and the implementation of commitments of the 4th BNC and to further reaffirm the bilateral relations and enhance cooperation within the framework of the BNC. The BNC will also provide a platform to exchange views on international issues of mutual interest.
  • SOSHANGUVE – 22 APR 2022 (10H35) Cash in Transit (CIT) robbery reported at Hebron Road and Umphafa Street at the BP Thorntree Fuel Station. Reports indicate that unidentified suspects have robbed an armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries have been reported. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 22 APR 2022 (11H15) Peaceful protest reported at the University of the Witwatersrand. The demonstrators are protesting in solidarity with the Al-Aqsa mosque in Palestine. Members of the public are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 22 APR 2022 (13H00) Eskom has announced that loadshedding is expected to be suspended nationwide from 22H00 tonight, 22 April 2022. However, the power utility has cautioned the public that the power system currently remains under severe constraints and volatile despite the return to service of some units. Therefore, members of the public are advised to reduce power consumption.

  • UMGABABA – 22 APR 2022 (06H25) Protest reported on the R102 in Umgababa. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery.   • PINETOWN – 22 APR 2022 (06H30) UPDATE Road closure reported on Old Richmond Road and the M1 due to ongoing protests. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (05H55) Protest reported Chestnut Cres in the vicinity of Engen Oak Fuel Station in KwaMamdekazi. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • VERULAM – 22 APR 2022 (07H10) Protest reported on Tottenham Road in Ottawa. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have obstructed the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • DANNHAUSER – 22 APR 2022 (07H25) Protest reported at the intersection of West Street and the R621. Taxi operators are blocking the entrance to Dannhauser. The reason for the taxi strike is unknown at this stage. Previous demonstrations related to taxi strikes were due to their impounded taxi and other issues related to the taxi industry. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • SWIDI – 22 APR 2022 (12H05) UPDATE Police have dispersed demonstrations. The R614 route has been reopened for traffic flow. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (06H10) Protest reported on the R614 in the vicinity of Sikhulie Secondary School towards Bhamshela. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • DURBAN – 22 APR 2022 (12H50) Service disruption reported on Umgeni Road and electron Road. Reports indicated that a substation has experienced a breakdown. The cause of the disruption is unknown at this stage. A technical team is on the scene. Members of the public are advised to be vigilant.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 22 APR 2022

  • PIETERSBURG/POLOKWANE – 22 APR 2022 (16H05) UPDATE Lepelle Northern Water Board Chairperson Ndweleni Mphephu has received and signed SAMWU’s MoD and vows to respond timeously. Demonstrators have dispersed from the scene. (14H55) Workers have arrived at the Lepelle Northern Water Office to submit a Memorandum of Demands (MoD). (11H10) The demonstrators have started marching to the Lepelle Northern Water office to deliver a memorandum of demands. (06H20) Protest expected by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) today, 22 April 2022, from 10H00 at Lepelle Northern Water office. Demonstrators are expected to gather at SABC Park and then proceed to the Lepelle Northern Water office. SAMWU will raise concerns regarding the safety of employees, the Board’s failure in its fiduciary duties, implementation of collective agreements, unilateral change of conditions of service and the insourcing of services at the waterboard. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the march. Police will be monitoring the protest.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 22 APR 2022

  • WAKKERSTROOM – 22 APR 2022 (06H05) Police Minister Bheki Cele and Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Executive Director Jennifer Ntlatseng are expected to host a community Imbizo at Esizameleni Soccer Field today, 22 April 2022, at 10H00. Wakkerstroom is marred by high unemployment, crime, human rights abuse and stock theft.
  • MIDDELBURG – 22 APR 2022 (09H20) The Commander in Chief (CIC) of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Julius Malema, is expected to address the EFF May Day Rally on Sunday, 01 May 2022, from 11H00 at the Themba Sinamela Stadium.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 22 APR 2022

  • POTCHEFSTROOM – 22 APR 2022 (08H00) The JB Marks Local Municipality has issued a public notice of possible water supply interruptions due to cable theft at the Potchefstroom Water Treatment Plant. The incident reportedly occurred at one of the pump stations feeding Ikageng Water Reservoir and Ventersdorp Road Reservoir, which resulted in low water levels. The areas that are expected to be affected include Miederpark, the Central Business District (CBD), Bult, Wester Part of Ikageng, Promosa, and Mohadin. Technicians are on-site and attending to the matter. Repairs are expected to continue for approximately three hours, with water set to be restored at approximately 15H00. Relevant updates will be released as the matter progresses.
  • MAHIKENG – 22 APR 2022 (08H20) The African National Congress (ANC) National Spokesperson, Pule Mabe, has announced that the North West province and Free State province, under the leadership of the ANC Interim Provincial Committees (IPC), are expected to hold the provincial conferences in May and June 2022. Mabe stated that the provinces have confirmed the preparation work for regional and provincial conferences has been complete.
  • RUSTENBURG – 22 APR 2022 (13H45) North West Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Health, Madoda Sambatha, has announced the launch of investigations into a fire that recently occurred at the Job Shimankana Tabane (JST) Hospital in Rustenburg. The MEC has noted that the fire, which occurred on Wednesday evening, 20 April 2022, has affected a portion of the mental unit at the JST Hospital. Sambatha has further stated that the Department is collaborating with the Municipality’s Fire Department to investigate the cause of the fire.
  • DEELPAN – 22 APR 2022 (16H25) Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Obed Bapela, has announced that the National State of Disaster services are to be extended to the North West province. The Deputy Minister made the announcement during a recent visit to the Deelpan village near Mahikeng, which has experienced significant flooding following adverse weather in the region. Bapela has stated that North West Premier Bushy Maape is expected officially write a letter to the National Department regarding the matter.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 22 APR 2022

  • JAN KEMPDORP – 22 APR 2022 (06H20) Explosion reported at a Capitec Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) in Jan Kempdorp. Reports indicate that an unknown number of suspects have bombed a Capitec ATM. The suspects have fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has launched an investigation into the incident.
  • DE AAR – 22 APR 2022 (06H50) The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Bentley Vass, is expected to hand over title deeds in the Emthanjeni local municipal area today, 22 April 2022, from 11H00 until 13H00. Vass is also expected to conduct an oversight visit at the De Aar Housing Project 2386 site.
  • HARTSWATER/ PHOKWANE – 22 APR 2022 (17H40) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have secured Ward 3 in the Phokwane Local Municipality in the Northern Cape during the recent by-elections. The win in Pampierstad East, which constitutes most of Phokwane’s Ward 3, ends the African National Congress’ (ANCs) majority, which it won during the November 2021 Local Government Elections. Former Mayor Olebogeng Tumodi, who had been dismissed from the ANC in late 2021, won the ward with 56% of the vote, ahead of the governing party’s 43%, with the Patriotic Alliance (PA) taking the remaining 1% of the votes. The EFF currently holds five of 19 council seats, with the ANC’s total reduced from 10 to nine.

  • CAPE TOWN – 22 APR 2022 (11H40) Protest reported on Oliver Tambo Drive in the vicinity of Samora Machel Police Station in Philippi. The demonstrators have obstructed the road. The M7/Jakes Gerwel Drive road has been affected by the protest. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • CAPE TOWN – 22 APR 2022 (13H40) Bush fire reported next to the R300 Southbound approaching the N2 highway in the vicinity of Delft, Cape Town. The reason for the fire remains undetermined at this time. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant when travelling in the area due to reduced visibility on the roadway. Emergency services are responding to the fire.
  • CAPE TOWN – 22 APR 2022 (14H25) UPDATE Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has announced the appointment of David Maynier as the new Education Member of Executive Committee (MEC) amid several changes to the provincial Cabinet. This follows the recent resignation of Debbie Schäfer as Education MEC. Maynier previously served as the MEC of Finance and Economic Opportunities. As part of his Cabinet reshuffle, Winde also appointed Mireille Wenger as Finance and Economic Opportunities MEC. Wenger previously served as Democratic Alliance (DA) Chief Whip in the province. Winde also named three new portfolios, including Infrastructure, Mobility, and Police Oversight and Community Safety. Tertius Simmers has been appointed as MEC for Infrastructure. Winde appointed DA Member of Parliament (MP) Reagan Allen as MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety. Former Transport and Public Works MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela has been assigned as an advisor to Winde, with Daylin Mitchell appointed as MEC for Mobility. (08H30) Premier Alan Winde is expected to announce changes to the provincial Cabinet today, 22 April 2022, at the Century City Conference from 11H15. This follows his commitment during the State of the Province Address (SOPA) to push back against going back to normal and push forward to do better. Winde is expected to announce a new department for infrastructure and mobility.
  • CAPE TOWN – 22 APR 2022 (18H20) Road closure expected on the M5 between Settlers Way and Koeberg in Cape Town on Saturday, 24 April 2022, and Sunday, 25 April 2022. The road is scheduled to be closed to traffic between 22H00 and 05H00 to allow road maintenance operations. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the road closure.
