  • PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 22 FEB 2022 (14H45) UPDATE Police have dispersed demonstrations. The M4/ Humewood Road has been reopened for traffic flow. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (11H30) Protest reported on the M4/ Humewood Road at the Walmer Boulevard intersection. The demonstrators have obstructed traffic flow and demanded that the Mayor of Gqeberha, Eugene Johnson, address them concerning their grievances. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 22 FEB 2022

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 FEB 2022 (06H00) The South African Students Congress (SASCO) at the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein has called on the institution to revisit recent decisions that have restricted students. These decisions include turning away students due to lack of space on campus, mandatory COVID-19 vaccination, which led to the arrest of three protesters at the institution on Friday, 18 February 2022, and the commencement of classes this Monday, 21 February 2022, following recent indications that there will be no further extension of registration. UFS SASCO stated that it supports the protesters who have been arrested on Friday and requested the University to reconsider their recent decisions of students who have been told that they cannot register due to the lack of space.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 FEB 2022 (10H30) UPDATE Suspended African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Ace Magashule and co-accused have arrived at the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court. The court proceeding has begun. (08H50) Suspended African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Ace Magashule and co-accused are expected to continue with their pre-trial in Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court today, 22 February 2022. The accused are facing charges regarding the R255-million Free State asbestos roofing corruption case. Supporters are expected to protest outside the Bloemfontein High Court during the proceedings. A heightened security presence is reported.
  • HARRISMITH – 22 FEB 2022 (10H30) Road closure reported on the N3 outside Harrismith heading towards Eeram. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Emergency services are on the scene. Recovery is in progress.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 FEB 2022 (12H15) Protest reported at the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein. Students are protesting due to the lack of capacity at the campus and against mandatory vaccinations. Demonstrators are disrupting classes. The students delivered a memorandum of demands to the representative of the institution on Monday, 20 February 2022. Students stated that no classes will proceed until their demands are met. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 FEB 2022 (16H50) UPDATE The  Mangaung Municipal has elected the Head of Directorate of Social Services, Mzingisi Nkungwana, as the new acting City Manager of Mangaung, following a council meeting that was held today, 22 February 2022. This follows after a protest by employees to demand a new City Manager. (14H55) Protest reported outside the Mangaung Municipal Metro offices. The employees are protesting over concerns of non-payment of salaries of February 2022. This follows after the council removed the Acting City Manager, Sello More. The demonstrators demand an appointment of a new City Manager. The demonstrators have vowed not to resume their duties until their demands are met. The demonstrators have barricaded the area with debris. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 22 FEB 2022

  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 22 FEB 2022 (06H45) The National Energy Regulator (NERSA) is expected to make a decision by Friday, 25 February 2022, on the proposed electricity tariff increase to be implemented this year. This follows after Eskom has applied for an electricity price increase of 20.5% for its 2023 financial year, set to take effect from 01 April 2022.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 22 FEB 2022 (07H50) Public Service and Administration Minister Ayanda Dlodlo stated that work is underway to withdraw the National State of Disaster in line with the risk-adjusted strategy. Dlodlo stated that the Government is working to improve vaccination uptake to attain population immunity and continue to observe non-pharmaceutical health protocols. This will assist the Government in cautiously withdrawing the National State of Disaster.
  • RANDBURG – 22 FEB 2022 (08H00) Road closure reported on Ontdekkers Road, between 7th Street and 9th Street in Delarey. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene. Recovery is in progress.
  • BOKSBURG – 22 FEB 2022 (09H45) Peaceful protest reported at the Birchwood Conference Centre on Viewpoint Road. Members affiliated with the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) Central Executive Committee (CEC) are protesting against retrenchments in the hospital sector. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are on the scene.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 22 FEB 2022 (10H00) The Saint Martin’s school has suspended classes today, 22 February 2022, due to safety concerns. This follows after a cash-in-transit robbery on Friars Hill Road across the school in Rosettenville on Monday, 21 February 2022. A total of 10 suspects have been shot and killed by Police, five Police officers have been injured. Eight suspects have been arrested and, Police have launched a search operating to find the remaining seven suspects.
  • MIDRAND – 22 FEB 2022 (10H45) The City Power Revenue Protection Unit is currently conducting an operation to remove illegal connections in Commercia Industrial area near Rabbie Ridge. Businesses in this industrial area have been affected by the illegal connections. The public is advised to be vigilant.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 22 FEB 2022 (13H20) The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Development, Nkululeko Mbundu, is expected to hold a meeting with the leaders of the Informal Traders Association from various regions in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 23 February 2022 from 09H00 at the Council Chamber. The meeting with Informal Trader Associations will allow MMC Mbundu to speak with the Informal Traders and understand various challenges they are faced with, and come up with solutions.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 22 FEB 2022

  • DURBAN – 22 FEB 2022 (06H25) Protest reported on M35 near the Muthwas petrol station in Isipingo. Demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. The road is closed to traffic. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • SOVANE – 22 FEB 2022 (08H00) Road closure reported on the R66 at the Mkuze River bridge between Pongola and Nongoma. The road is closed due to flooding. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 22 FEB 2022 (09H00) The student leadership at the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Indumiso campus distanced themselves from the arson attack by several suspects on Monday, 21 February 2022. This follows after approximately ten suspects attacked a security guard from the pedestrian gate along Edendale Road. The suspects petrol bombed a guardhouse and nine vehicles. Police are continuing to investigate the matter. No arrests have been made.
  • UMZINTO – 22 FEB 2022 (13H35) The Umdoni Local Municipality has announced that the by-elections scheduled for Wednesday, 23 February 2022, in Ward 13 have been postponed. The Municipality stated that the new date will be announced.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 22 FEB 2022

  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 22 FEB 2022 (00H20) The Limpopo Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs has called on members of the public to refrain from the illegal sale of Government Subsidy (RDP) houses. This follows a social media post advertising the sale of several RDP hoses in various parts of Seshego outside Polokwane. Department Spokesperson Hitekani Magwedze has stated that a policy in the Housing Amendment Act makes provision for an individual to sell an RDP house post-occupation for a fixed term of seven years.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 22 FEB 2022

  • KANYAMAZANE – 22 FEB 2022 (07H20) The Mpumalanga Government is in the process of developing Nkosi City, the province’s first post-apartheid city, which will be located in the Pienaar area on the western border of the Kruger National Park. Construction on the R8-billion project is expected to start in June 2022. All Government approvals have already been obtained. Dovetail Properties Director Philip Kleijnhans stated that the development would take place through small-scale farming land parcels next to Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) houses, which will be integrated into the urban design from the outset. The farming projects will create jobs for unemployed women and young people. An estimated 15,000 jobs are expected to be created, with power to the new city partially supplied by a solar farm and a biomass renewable energy plant.
  • VERENA – 22 FEB 2022 (09H20) The Mpumalanga Education Department officials are expected to assess the damage caused by a fire at Sekemisa Primary School in Verena today, 22 February 2022. This follows after a classroom at the school caught fire on Friday, 18 February 2022, at 19H00. The circumstances that caused the fire are unknown at this moment. However, the Police are investigating a case of arson.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 22 FEB 2022

  • POTCHEFSTROOM – 22 FEB 2022 (08H30) The North West Health Member of Executive Council (MEC), Madoda Sambatha, has called on the communities in the JB Marks Local Municipality to remain calm while vigilant as there are no confirmed Typhoid cases in the area. However, The Department has confirmed that the Matlosana Sub-District has reported cases. In the Matlosana sub-district, 21 laboratory-confirmed cases of typhoid fever have been detected from November 2020 to February 2022.
  • BRITS – 22 FEB 2022 (13H50) Protest reported on Piet Rautenbach Street at the Traffic Department. The demonstrators are protesting against the online driving licence booking system. The demonstrators have barricaded the entrance of the building. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • BRITS – 22 FEB 2022 (14H35) Protest reported outside the Multi Plant Seedling Nursery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • MAKWASSIE – 22 FEB 2022 (16H40) UPDATE Police have dispersed demonstrations at the R505 at Lebaleng informal settlement. The road has been reopened for traffic flow. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. (12H20) Protest reported on the R505 at Lebaleng informal settlement outside Makwassie heading towards Bloemhof. Demonstrators are barricading the roads with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 22 FEB 2022

  • KIMBERLEY – 22 FEB 2022 (15H45) The construction site of the Kimberley Nursing College student accommodation has been closed down today, 22 February 2022, by subcontractors that have not received payment. The subcontractors stated that the Xcellent Contractor had received R12 million from the Department of Health and indicated that payment will be made on 18 February 2022. The subcontractors have vowed to stop all operations until all payments have been made.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 22 FEB 2022

  • GRABOUW – 22 FEB 2022 (13H00) UPDATE Police have dispersed the demonstrators. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. The road is open to traffic. (11H50) Protest reported on Ou Kaapse Weg/ Main Road at the Knoflokskraal informal settlement in Grabouw. Demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • CAPE TOWN – 22 FEB 2022 (16H20) Bush fire reported at Noordhoek Wetlands in the vicinity of Lake Michelle Estate. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service is currently on the scene, alongside the NCC Wildfire Services, as they attempt to stop the flames from spreading.
  • CAPE TOWN – 22 FEB 2022 (18H45) UPDATE My Citi Bus has announced the station has been closed until further notice due to a fire. Details on the impact on services will be announced after investigations. (16H30) My Cit bus has announced that the T01 route will be deviated due to a bus that caught fire. (15H50) Fire reported at the Esplanade Metrorail Station in Woodstock. Reports indicated that a My Citi Bus has caught fire. The reason for the fire is unknown at this stage. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Emergency services have been dispatched.
