SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 22 MAR 2022

  • EAST LONDON – 21 MAR 2022 (19H45) UPDATE The N2 near Kwelera between East London and Kei Bridge has been reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (14H30) The N2 near Kwelera between East London, and Kei Bridge remain closed to traffic. Two casualties have been reported, and eighteen people have sustained injuries. The injured have been transported to Frere Hospital. Search, rescue, and recovery personnel remain on the scene. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (09H35) Road closure reported on the N2 between East London and Mthatha in the Brakfontein area due to a tanker explosion following an accident with a bus. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.
  • PATERSON – 21 MAR 2022 (18H20) Road closure reported on the N10 outside Paterson heading towards East Bank. The road is closed due to a motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene. Recovery is in progress.

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 MAR 2022 (08H10) The Mangaung Metro Municipality water supplier BloemWater Spokesperson, Kido Thoabala, has confirmed the death of one of its employees during the failure of a water pipeline at the Welbedacht Dam on Sunday, 20 March 2022. Thoabala stated that operations have been affected however, repairs to the pipeline have commenced, and water tankers will be deployed to the areas that are affected until the situation improves.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 MAR 2022 (09H40) Protest reported Charles Street and Hertzog Park in the vicinity of Glass Palace. The demonstrators have barricaded the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 22 MAR 2022

  • GA-RANKUWA – 21 MAR 2022 (20H20) Targeted murder reported at Lekgalong Primary School. Two teachers have been shot and killed. The suspect shot and killed one victim, then turned the weapon on himself. The Police are investigating the matter.
  • LENASIA – 21 MAR 2022 (21H45) Protest reported on the R554 Abu Baker Drive in Lenasia. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery related to power outages. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • SANDTON – 22 MAR 2022 (06H00) National industrial strike expected by e-hailing operators from today, 22 March 2022, until Thursday, 24 March 2022. Demonstrators will be protesting against low fares, rising fuel prices, data costs, vehicle maintenance, robberies and a high commission structure, alleged harassment by road traffic officials and minibus taxi drivers. In Nelson Mandela Bay, e-hailing drivers stated that they would participate in the shutdown. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the strike.
  • NIGEL – 22 MAR 2022 (06H45) Protest reported on the R550 in the vicinity of Duduza. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery related to power outages.   • BOKSBURG – 22 MAR 2022 (08H30) UPDATE Road closure reported on Lower Boksburg Road, Commission Street, Elsburg Road/M35 and Main Reef Road/R29 due to protest. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.  (07H25) Demonstrators are burning tyres on Lower Boksburg Road and Elsburg Road/M35 towards Ramaphosa Taxi Rank in the vicinity of Reiger Park. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (06H25) Protest expected by the Community of Delmore Park and Gardens today, 22 March 2022. The demonstrators are expected to protest due to poor service delivery related to power outages. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 22 MAR 2022

  • RICHARDS BAY – 21 MAR 2022 (20H10) Rio Tinto mining company announced that it has lifted the force majeure on customer contracts at its Richards Bay Minerals operation. The force majeure commenced on 30 June 2021 following a deterioration in the security situation around the mine. The General Manager, Nico Swart, has been killed in May 2021 during the violence.
  • DURBAN – 22 MAR 2022 (06H05) National industrial strike expected by e-hailing operators from today, 22 March 2022, until Thursday, 24 March 2022. Demonstrators will be protesting against low fares, rising fuel prices, data costs, vehicle maintenance, robberies and a high commission structure, alleged harassment by road traffic officials and minibus taxi drivers. The demonstrators are expected to gather in the vicinity of George Campbell School of Technology and march to the City Hall to hand over a memorandum. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to the area.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 22 MAR 2022

  • TRICHARDT – 21 MAR 2022 (20H30) The Makhado Magistrates’ Court has granted R5,000 bail to the District Court Control Prosecutor based at the Vuwani Magistrate Court, Moyahabo Matheba. Co-accused Nkhangweni Mudau, Mulalo Baloyi and 15 other suspects have also been granted R1,000 bail. The suspects are facing charges of fraud, money laundering, forgery and uttering. The suspects allegedly created ghost workers to clean streets, roads, tribal offices and schools under Elim, Waterval and Dzanani areas. The suspects also defrauded the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs of R979,000 for salaries between 2016 and 2021.
  • DENDRON – 22 MAR 2022 (09H05) Protest reported on the R521 in Dendron. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery.   • KOSTER – 21 MAR 2022 (20H45) The residents of Ketleng informal settlement have called on the Government to address water challenges. The residents have been experiencing water shortages in the area for a long time and have caused sanitation challenges. This follows after President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the Reagile Sports ground to deliver the keynote address at the commemoration of Human Rights Day today, 21 March 2022.

  • KIMBERLEY – 21 MAR 2022 (19H00) UPDATE Kimberley residents have banned two foreign business owners out of the city after searching their stores and allegedly finding narcotics. Members of Operation Fiela raided businesses around the city in search of narcotics and illegal immigrants. The raids have been conducted following information received of food outlets around town being used as a front for narcotics trading. (10H50) Community members are raiding undocumented foreign national businesses in the CBD. (10H10) Protest reported on Aster Road in the vicinity of Kemo Hotel. Residents are marching to the Central Business District and the Indian Centre. The demonstrators are protesting against illegal immigrants and the high crime rate related to drugs.
