SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 22 MAR 2022

  • PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 22 MAR 2022 (17H20) The Eastern Cape Transport Department announced plans to ensure road safety during the Easter holiday period. This follows after safety concerns of commuters travelling between the Western and Eastern Cape due to six buses that have been attacked between Tarkastad and Cradock last week. The Department stated that security measures will be increased during this period.

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 MAR 2022 (08H10) The Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality water supplier BloemWater Spokesperson, Kido Thoabala, has confirmed the death of one of its employees during the failure of a water pipeline at the Welbedacht Dam on Sunday, 20 March 2022. Thoabala stated that operations have been affected. However, repairs to the pipeline have commenced, and water tankers will be deployed to the areas that are affected until the situation improves.
  • RIEBEECKSTAD – 22 MAR 2022 (14H10) Road closure reported on the R70 between Riebeeckstad and Hennenman. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 MAR 2022 (17H30) UPDATE Police have dispersed demonstrators with stun grenades at CUT. The Police have arrested several students for incitement to public violence. CUT students are demanding accommodation for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) students. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (10H30) Protest reported on President Brand Street in the vicinity of the Central University of Technology (CUT). The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris.   • BLOEMFONTEIN – 22 MAR 2022 (17H50) UPDATE Demonstrators have dispersed on Mackenzie street and Dennis Pooley street. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (10H50) Protest reported on Mackenzie street and Dennis Pooley street. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are protesting in support of the G4S security company employees. The demonstrators have blocked the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

  • BOKSBURG – 22 MAR 2022 (08H30) UPDATE Road closure reported on Lower Boksburg Road, Commission Street, Elsburg Road/M35 and Main Reef Road/R29 due to protest. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (07H25) Demonstrators are burning tyres on Lower Boksburg Road and Elsburg Road/M35 towards Ramaphosa Taxi Rank in the vicinity of Reiger Park. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. (06H25) Protest expected by the Community of Delmore Park and Gardens today, 22 March 2022. The demonstrators are expected to protest due to poor service delivery related to power outages. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • NIGEL – 22 MAR 2022 (12H05) UPDATE Clashes reported between demonstrators and the Police. Police are firing rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the demonstrations. (06H45) Protest reported on the R550 in the vicinity of Duduza. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery related to power outages. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • CENTURION – 22 MAR 2022 (12H50) Protest reported on the corner of Rabie Street and Basden Avenue in the vicinity of the Municipal offices.   • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 22 MAR 2022 (14H30) Protest expected at the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) office on Friday, 25 March 2022 at 12H00 by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Members of the EFF will hand over a memorandum of demands to PSIRA management. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the march. Police are aware of the protest.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 22 MAR 2022 (15H00) UPDATE E-hailing drivers have been delayed at the Union Buildings. The Government representative who has been appointed to receive the memorandum is unable to attend the handover. (14H50) E-hailing drivers have delivered their memorandum of demands at the DTIC office. (13H50) E-hailing drivers are protesting on the N4 moving through Hatfield. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Traffic officials are directing the traffic flow. (13H00) The demonstrators are demonstrating outside the DTIC where they will deliver the first memorandum of demands. (12H45) Demonstrators have moved to The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition DTIC offices at the corner of Robert Sobukwe Street and Meintjie Street. (11H40) E-hailing drivers have gathered on the Es’kia Mphahlele Drive/M1. The demonstrators are expected to demonstrate in a motorcade. (10H20) E-hailing drivers are expected to march to the Department of Trade and Industry and the Union Buildings. (06H00) National industrial strike expected by e-hailing operators from today, 22 March 2022, until Thursday, 24 March 2022. Demonstrators will be protesting against low fares, rising fuel prices, data costs, vehicle maintenance, robberies and a high commission structure, alleged harassment by road traffic officials and minibus taxi drivers. In Nelson Mandela Bay, e-hailing drivers stated that they would participate in the shutdown. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the strike.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 22 MAR 2022 (16H10) The City of Tshwane has issued notices of dismissal to nineteen employees taking part in the ongoing unprotected strike. The employees are stationed at the Mayville deport and are represented by the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU). The employees have been given until Thursday. 24 March 2022 to submit a written letter as to why their services should not be terminated. The city will thereafter make a decision to terminate the contracts or not.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 22 MAR 2022 (17H55) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation at 20H00 today, 22 March 2022. President Ramaphosa will discuss the developments in South Africa’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 22 MAR 2022 (18H20) UPDATE Government Avenue has been reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (16H30) Road closure reported on Government Avenue near the Union Buildings. Police have cordoned off the road due to an incident between a Police officer and e-hailing drivers. The protestors allegedly stopped the Police officer in an unmarked vehicle, mistaking him for an e-haling driver. A protestor disarmed the officer and fired a shot. Two protestors have been taken to the Sunnyside Police Station. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are investigating the matter.

  • IZINGOLWENI – 22 MAR 2022 (12H30) Protest reported on the road between Izingolweni and Port Edward. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. (06H05) National industrial strike expected by e-hailing operators from today, 22 March 2022, until Thursday, 24 March 2022. Demonstrators will be protesting against low fares, rising fuel prices, data costs, vehicle maintenance, robberies and a high commission structure, alleged harassment by road traffic officials and minibus taxi drivers. The demonstrators are expected to gather in the vicinity of George Campbell School of Technology and march to the City Hall to hand over a memorandum.   • DURBAN – 22 MAR 2022 (15H20) Police have launched an investigation into the targeted murder of a KwaZulu-Natal Police Officer. The Police officer was killed in a drive-by shooting in Chatsworth on Monday night, 21 March 2022. The officer with two passengers was on their way to attend to a crime scene. Police are investigating a case of murder.

  • CAPE TOWN – 22 MAR 2022 (17H00) Targeted murder reported on the corner of Bocherds Quarry Road and Klipfontein Road/ M18 near Nyanga. A taxi driver has been shot and killed. The suspect fled the scene. Police are on the scene, investigating the matter.
