• PORT ST JOHNS – 23 MAY 2022 (08H25) Protest reported on the R61 between Port St Johns and Mthatha in the vicinity of Mkanzini. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

SARS employees affiliated with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) are protesting for wage increases. SARS employees are protesting for the duration of lunchtime. The protest is before the official strike that is expected to start on Wednesday, 25 May 2022. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.

• BLOEMFONTEIN – 23 MAY 2022 (02H30) The Free State South African Police Services (SAPS) has launched search operations for suspects involved in a fatal shooting on Saturday, 22 May 2022. The operation has been established following intelligence received by the public regarding three civilians fatally injured at the intersection of the N6 and R702. The three members have been moved to the location where they have been fatally injured. This follows after the Police confiscated empty cartridges and noted motor vehicle tracks at the scene.
• BLOEMFONTEIN – 23 MAY 2022 (12H00) Protest reported outside the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). EFF members are protesting to demand justice for Dimakatso Ratselane, who was stabbed by Makhenzie Ratselane. Makhenzie Ratselane is expected to appear at the magistrate on charges of attempted murder. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

• VEREENIGING – 23 MAY 2022 (00H40) The Emfuleni Local Municipality has announced a special council meeting is expected to be held on 24 May 2022 at the Vereeniging Banquet Hall. The meeting has been called in terms of section 19 of the Municipal Systems Act No 32 2000. Furthermore, the meeting is expected to commence at approximately 10H00. During the meeting, members are set to discuss the approval of a special adjustment budget in terms of Section 28 of the Municipal Budget and Reporting Regulations of 2009. The notice has been provided as required by Legislation.
• GERMISTON – 23 MAY 2022 (08H20) UPDATE Demonstrations reported on Knights Road in the vicinity of SA Metal Group. Stone-throwing reported in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 23 MAY 2022 (08H40) Members affiliated with the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) employed by the South Africa Revenue Service (SARS) are expected to begin with lunchtime demonstrations today, 23 May 2022 and Tuesday, 24 May 2022. The lunchtime demonstrations are part of the build-up to a protest expected on Wednesday, 25 May 2022. The demonstrators are expected to protest in demand of a 12% increase across the board, full and equal medical aid and housing allowance for all employees.
• SANDTON – 23 MAY 2022 (09H10) The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has called off its planned shutdown of the A Re Yeng bus services. This follows after NUMSA signed an agreement with Xtremetec and Tshwane Affected Investment Operation (TAIO) for workers to receive Transport allowance and other benefits. NUMSA has secured medical aid contribution from the employer of 30%, which is expected to increase by 8% in 2023, increase in annual leave for those employees who have been at the company for more than two years, ten days per annum for approved courses.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 23 MAY 2022 (10H50) Protest reported at Union Buildings. Members affiliated with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU). The demonstrators are protesting to demand an R1000 salary increase for entry-level and a 6% increase for other workers. The demonstrators also demand President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area. Police are on the scene.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 23 MAY 2022 (13H00) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to host the Head of Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on an official visit on Tuesday, 24 May 2022, at the Union Buildings Pretoria. Scholz will visit South Africa at the invitation of President Ramaphosa and will be accompanied by senior officials and business executives. President Ramaphosa and Scholz will exchange views on several issues of bilateral and international crisis, including ways to enhance cooperation in areas such as energy and climate change, trade and investment, and responses to COVID-19 and vaccine demand. During the discussions, the leaders will reflect on developments on the African continent and internationally, including the conflict in Ukraine and its impact on the international economy and food and energy security. The leaders will exchange views on Germany’s G7 priorities and strategies on ways to benefit emerging economies and the African continent in particular. President Ramaphosa will also join Scholz to launch a South African-German consortium that will advance technology research to produce sustainable aviation fuels at Sasol Limited in Sandton on Tuesday at 15H00. This follows as Scholz embarked on a three-nation visit to Senegal and Niger aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.

• SANDTON – 23 MAY 2022 (15H45) The Mayor of Johannesburg, Mpho Phalatse, delivered a keynote address during the first day of the maiden Johannesburg Energy Indaba at the Sandton Conventional Centre today, 23 May 2022. Phalatse stated that the future of sustainable energy lies with public-private partnerships. The two-day event seeks to come up with solutions aimed at addressing current challenges, particularly the ongoing electricity crisis.
• SOWETO – 23 MAY 2022 (16H15) UPDATE Students at the University of Johannesburg are protesting due to electricity outages. Police attempted to disperse demonstrators with water and tear gas. SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 23 MAY 2022
• WESTVILLE – 23 MAY 2022 (00H20) The South African Police Service (SAPS) of Westville has announced the launch of a search operation. The operation is set to apprehend Raksha Rajkuma Pooran regarding a case of Fraud and Theft. This follows after Pooran allegedly defrauded a local business of approximately R3,5 million between 2017 and 2019. The Police have requested the public to provide any information to assist in the Suspect’s apprehension.
• DURBAN – 23 MAY 2022 (02H00) The Kwazulu-Natal Provincial Government and Ethekwini Municipality have addressed the nation following the adverse weather on 21 May 2002 and 22 May 2022. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) stated that the storm is set to affect the coastal areas, including the district of King Cetshwayo and Mkhanyakude. The adverse weather has resulted in damaged infrastructure, including roads, settlements and other properties. Reports indicate that areas have been declared inaccessible. Approximately 250 people have been evacuated from Tongaat and Tehuise care centres. Furthermore, 82 care centres with 3,186 people in the city are set to be used to accommodate displaced people. The Government is set to monitor the water levels in flood-prone areas. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has been requested to deploy troops to assist the local Government. Relief interventions are ongoing to ensure social support services, relief assistance and medical assistance. Additionally, social partners have been activated, including the Red Cross, Al-Imdaad Foundation and others.

• POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 23 MAY 2022 (02H10) The Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, is expected to join the South African National Road Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) to address the media on Monday, 23 May 2022. The members are set to address the public at approximately 10H00. Furthermore, the Minister and SANRAL are expected to discuss the issues presented to the media. • THOHOYANDOU – 23 MAY 2022 (14H20) Activities, including lectures, are suspended at the University of Venda in Thohoyandou today, 23 May 2022. This follows after the suspension of the Student Representative Council President Smile Manganyi on Sunday, 22 May 2022, for allegedly leading an unlawful protest since 18 April 2022. Students stated that they would continue to protest until the university management lifted Manganyi’s suspension. Manganyi is not allowed to participate in any university activity until investigations are completed. The protest has led to the vandalisation of university and municipality infrastructure. The situation is currently calm. However, all staff members have been encouraged to work from home while they continue to monitor the situation on campus.

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 23 MAY 2022
• KABOKWENI – 23 MAY 2022 (01H00) Three suspects are expected to appear before the Kabokweni Magistrate’s court on Monday, 23 May 2022. The suspects are expected to appear in court regarding the death of Bontle Mashiyane. The arrests followed after the South African Police Services (SAPS) received intelligence about the location of Mashiyane’s body. Reports indicate that the suspects confessed to killing an additional four others who resided on the street. Furthermore, the suspects have been linked to prior crimes, including kidnapping.

• HARTBEESPOORT – 23 MAY 2022 (07H30) Road closure expected on the R104 between the Engen Petrol Station in Damdoryn and Snake Park from today, 23 May 2022, until Thursday, 26 May 2022. The road closure will allow the Department of Water and Sanitation, Brits/Hartbeespoort Rotary, to conduct maintenance and clean-up action on and around the Hartbeespoort Dam.
• ZEERUST – 23 MAY 2022 (08H50) Protest expected by members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Wednesday, 25 May 2022, at the Zeerust Magistrate Court. The EFF members are expected to protest to demand the court to deny bail to Ntseng Molefe, who has been arrested for the murder of Tshwanelo Seleke. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. • KIMBERLEY – 23 MAY 2022 (04H25) The International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister Alvin Botes, in collaboration with the Northern Cape Provincial Government Premier Zamani Saul, is expected to host an ASEAN investment seminar on 24 May 2022 at the Mittal Seperepere Convention Centre. • CAPE TOWN – 23 MAY 2022 (15H40) Police have launched an investigation into the shooting that occurred in Manenberg today, 23 May 2022. The shooting happened at approximately 06H15 along Duinefontein Road, Manenberg. Six victims have been shot and injured. The victims were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. The reason for the shooting is unknown at this stage.
