SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 24 MAY 2022
• PORT ELIZABETH/ GQEBERHA – 24 MAY 2022 (08H00) The Office of the Eastern Cape Secretary for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has announced a preparatory meeting scheduled to be held today, 24 May 2022, at the Mayfair Hotel, Mthatha. The members are set to hold the meeting in solidarity with the #JusticeForHlehle movement. This follows after the death of Sanga Nozintaba Hlehle on 21 April 2022.
• MOTHERWELL – 24 MAY 2022 (16H50) Protest reported on the R335 at the Addo Road intersection in Motherwell. Community members are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 24 MAY 2022
• HARRISMITH – 24 MAY 2022 (16H15) Eskom held a meeting with the Maluti-A-Phofung (MAP) local municipality regarding its debt. Eskom Spokesperson Stefanie Jansen Van Rensburg stated that the power supplier is awaiting the municipality’s feedback on a possible resolution. The parties have no other agreements in place at the moment. The parties was successfully interdicted by the Harrismith Business Forum and agreed they cannot switch off the power for no payment. However, MAP has not invested in its networks or upgraded its supply. Therefore, Eskom continues to implement Notified Maximum Demand (NMD) limitations to prevent the entire network from failing.

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 24 MAY 2022
• SOWETO – 24 MAY 2022 (05H05) The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Secretary-General Marshall Dlamini is expected to host a peaceful rally on 29 May 2022 at Slovo Park in Ward 53. The rally is expected to commence at approximately 14H00. Furthermore, the rally is set to address EFF supporters ahead of the upcoming by-elections set for 01 June 2022.
• SOWETO – 24 MAY 2022 (06H15) Protest reported on the M72 on Koma Street/ Elias Motsoaledi in Mofolo North. Demonstrators have barricaded the road with debris. Traffic has been obstructed towards Crossroads. Previously, community members demonstrated over poor service delivery related to power outages. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 24 MAY 2022 (06H30) The Sibanye-Stillwater employees affiliated with mining unions, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the National Union of Miners (NUM), held a demonstration outside the Union Buildings in Pretoria, Monday evening, 23 May 2022. The mineworkers have demanded that President Cyril Ramaphosa address them and demand an R1,000 salary increase backdated for three years. The mineworkers have also vowed to demonstrate at the Union Buildings until President Ramaphosa intervenes. A representative from NUM, Mandla Mokadi, has stated that the mineworkers have rejected the management offer of R800 for entry-level workers who were semi-skilled and only 5% for officials with an R50 allowance, and they have been on strike for 11 weeks since 09 March 2022, and has demanded that President Ramaphosa fulfil his promises made at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Workers Day, which is to engage with the mine’s Chief Executive Officer.
• RIVERLEA – 24 MAY 2022 (07H50) UPDATE Demonstrators have barricaded the Main Reef Road and Avon Street in Riverlea. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use an alternative route. (06H45) Protest reported on Main Reef Road and Nasrec Road in Riverlea. Community members are demonstrating over poor service delivery related to power outages. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. Police are aware of the situation.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 24 MAY 2022 (09H00) Protest reported outside the Union Buildings on Government Avenue. The Sibanye-Stillwater employees affiliated with mining unions, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the National Union of Miners (NUM) are demonstrating in demand for a wage increase. The demonstrators have urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene and engage with the mine’s Chief Executive Officer. Members of the public are advised to remain cautious. Authorities are aware of the situation.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 24 MAY 2022 (12H40) UPDATE President Ramaphosa and his German counterpart Chancellor Scholz are now briefing the media following official talks held at the Cabinet. Members of the media are in attendance at the Union Buildings. (12H15) The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa and the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, are expected to address the media after their meeting in the Cabinet. Meanwhile, Scholz has expressed his support for assisting South Africa (SA) in manufacturing vaccines for SA and reiterated the need to develop investments within the country. (11H10) The Ministers of Germany and South Africa are convening at the Cabinet in the Union Buildings. Discussions will be underway focused on several issues of bilateral and international crisis, including ways to enhance cooperation in areas such as energy and climate change, trade and investment, and responses to COVID-19 and vaccine demand. (10H45) Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany has arrived at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. President Ramaphosa has welcomed Chancellor Scholz, who is on an official visit to South Africa, at the invitation of President Ramaphosa. Scholz’s visit comes as the Government seeks to continue strengthening its diplomatic relations and economic ties with the EU member country amid the COVID-19 pandemic. (08H20) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to host the Head of Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on an official visit today, 24 May 2022, at the Union Buildings Pretoria. Scholz will visit South Africa at the invitation of President Ramaphosa and will be accompanied by senior officials and business executives. President Ramaphosa and Scholz will exchange views on several issues of bilateral and international crisis, including ways to enhance cooperation in areas such as energy and climate change, trade and investment, and responses to COVID-19 and vaccine demand. During the discussions, the leaders will reflect on developments on the African continent and internationally, including the conflict in Ukraine and its impact on the international economy and food and energy security. The leaders will exchange views on Germany’s G7 priorities and strategies on ways to benefit emerging economies and the African continent in particular. President Ramaphosa will also join Scholz to launch a South African-German consortium that will advance technology research to produce sustainable aviation fuels at Sasol Limited in Sandton today at 15H00. This follows as Scholz embarked on a three-nation visit to Senegal and Niger aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 24 MAY 2022 (13H40) Protest reported at the Lion Match Company on Gallagher Street in Rosslyn. Operation Dudula members are protesting against illegal foreign nationals. Demonstrators are allegedly intimidating employees. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police have been dispatched to the scene.
• JOHANNESBURG – 24 MAY 2022 (15H00) The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) with Imvusa Security is implementing an illegal land invasion operation at Jackson Farm, Eikenhof. Officials removed 15 unoccupied structures and seized 98 galvanized zinc sheets. The public is advised to be vigilant.

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 24 MAY 2022
• DURBAN – 24 MAY 2022 (04H40) The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has announced the launch of an operation through the South African Army Intelligence Corps members, detached from the Engineer Squadron, under Joint Tactical Headquarters KwaZulu-Natal. The operation is expected to assist the Government following the adverse weather in Kwazulu-Natal on 21 May 2022 and 22 May 2022. The troops are expected to use the drones to recover intelligence around the inaccessible areas in Kwazulu-Natal following the recent heavy rains. The intelligence is expected to provide the Government with relevant assistance measures required in the inaccessible areas. The team operating the drones are expected to be under the command of Lieutenant Bafana Shepherd Mtshaise.
• PIETERMARITZBURG – 24 MAY 2022 (09H50) Protest reported on the N3 between Chota Motala Road and New England Road. Community members are protesting due to poor service delivery regarding electricity outages. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police are dispatched to the scene.

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 24 MAY 2022
• POLOKWANE/PIETERSBURG – 24 MAY 2022 (03H40) The Water and Sanitation Minister, Senzo Mchunu, is on a four-day visit to Limpopo to monitor the water supply and sanitation services. Mchunu is expected to be accompanied by Deputy David Mahlobo and Deputy Dikeledi Magazi. The Minister’s visit follows the protesting actions by Musina residents over water disruptions. During the protest, the members set alight the municipal offices, a fire station, a fire truck and others. Furthermore, the members blocked the N1 road between Musina and the Beitbridge border. The Minister is set to engage with the Lepelle Northern Water Board.
• PIETERSBURG/ POLOKWANE – 24 MAY 2022 (10H00) Protest reported outside the South African Revenue Service (SARS) branch in Polokwane Central. SARS employees affiliated with National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) are protesting for wage increases. SARS employees are protesting for the duration of lunchtime. The protest is before the official strike that is expected to start on Wednesday, 25 May 2022. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.
• LEPOTLAKO – 24 MAY 2022 (14H10) Protest reported on the D19/ Matala Road at Lepotlako informal settlement. Community members are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use the R567/ Gilead Road as an alternative route. Police are on the scene.

• MANAAR – 24 MAY 2022 (01H15) The Executive Major Deputy President Nkosi is expected to host the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipalities State of the Municipal Address (SOMA) meeting on 24 May 2022 at the Enikwakuyengwa Traditional Offices. The meeting is expected to commence at approximately 11H00. During the address, members are expected to Council the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality Draft Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget for consideration and adoption.
• KABOKWENI – 24 MAY 2022 (15H10) UPDATE The Police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the murder of Bontle Mashiyane. The suspects appeared before the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court today, 24 May 2022. The suspects will be joining three others charged with kidnapping, human trafficking, sexual assault and murder. The case is expected to continue on 24 June 2022. (07H15) Protest reported at the Mganduzweni taxi Rank in Lundi on the R538. Demonstrators are protesting against the murder of Bontle Zethu Ditebogo Mashiyane. The demonstrators have also allegedly set alight the residences of the accused suspects in Mganduzweni, near Hazyview, on Monday evening, 23 May 2022. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 24 MAY 2022
• DEELPAN – 24 MAY 2022 (06H00) The Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Pinky Kekana, along with Deputy Minister of Health, Sibongiseni Dlhomo, Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Obed Bapela and Deputy Minister of Human Settlement, Pamela Tshwete, are expected to visit Deelpan in the Tswaing Local Municipality on Tuesday, 24 May 2022. Government officials are expected to monitor and assess the extent of the damage caused by the floods in the area. The Disaster Management Team is expected to brief Kekana on their area plans and conduct a walk-about in the village.
• BRITS – 24 MAY 2022 (14H20) UPDATE The Wagpos Road near Oukasie has been reopened to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police are monitoring the situation. (10H40) Road closure reported on Wagpos Road near Oukasie. Residents barricaded the road with stones along the road to and from Oukasie. Community members are throwing stones at vehicles. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. Police have been deployed to the scene.
• MAHIKENG – 24 MAY 2022 (14H40) The North West High Court has postponed the case against former senior North West Health Department official Andrew Lekalakala to 03 October 2022. The case has been delayed due to Lekalakala’s ill health. Lekalakala faces two charges of fraud relating to the alleged fraudulent awarding of an R30-million contract for mobile clinics to Mediosa Health in February 2017. The company is linked to the Gupta family. Lekalakala is currently out on R5,000 bail.

Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. (05H50) Protest reported on the R514/R511 near the vicinity of Ten Rooms. Demonstrators have barricaded the road with tyres and debris. SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 24 MAY 2022
• KIMBERLEY – 24 MAY 2022 (08H15) The International Relations and Cooperation Deputy Minister Alvin Botes, in collaboration with the Northern Cape Provincial Government Premier Zamani Saul, is expected to host an ASEAN investment seminar today, 24 May 2022, at the Mittal Seperepere Convention Centre. The seminar is set to start at 08H00 and is expected to compromise from members of business communities, investors, Government Departments, Municipalities and Organs of the State. During the seminar, members are set to discuss investment opportunities for local and international investors. The countries included in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore and others.
• KIMBERLEY – 24 MAY 2022 (15H30) UPDATE The Northern Cape MEC for Health, Maruping Lekwene, visited the Robert Sobukwe Hospital (RMSH) today, 24 May 2022, due to a strike by the kitchen employees since Monday, 23 May 2022. The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) Branch Secretary, Gaorekwe Dongo Seagate, stated that the strike started over a misunderstanding regarding employee bonuses. NEHAWU is currently in negotiations with the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) for better benefits. The demonstrators have returned to work. (09H00) Protest reported on Du Toitspan Road near Saint Patrick CBC College in Kimberley. Demonstrators have obstructed traffic flow on Memorial Road and Hemming Street. • CAPE TOWN – 24 MAY 2022 (08H10) Protest expected by members affiliated with the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) today, 24 May 2022, from 11H00 at the Department of Health. NEHAWU members are expected to protest against the shortage of staff in public health, slow service delivery to communities and the non-filling of funded vacant posts.
