SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 26 APR 2022
• KIRKWOOD – 25 APR 2022 (20H55) UPDATE Demonstrators are setting alight local farmers’ property and infrastructure. The public is advised to avoid the area. (19H30) Protest reported in Kirkwood. The farmworkers are demanding wage increases and that more local residents be employed. The demonstrators have barricaded roads with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene. Allegedly one casualty has been reported. The situation is volatile.
• KIRKWOOD – 26 APR 2022 (08H00) Protest reported in Kirkwood. Farmworkers of Wicklow farm and Habata farm are protesting in demand for wage increases and more local residents be employed. The demonstrators have obstructed the roads. The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) representatives are expected to meet with farm employers at 10H00 to discuss the employee’s demands. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are monitoring the area.

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 26 APR 2022
• ALLANRIDGE – 25 APR 2022 (20H30) The Free State Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Police, Roads and Transport William Bulwane announced the closure of the R30 between Allanridge and Bothaville until further notice. This follows after six people were killed on the road on Saturday, 23 April 2022. A total of 23 people have died on the R30 since 2022. Bulwane stated that the water overflow is allegedly exacerbated by a burst pipe from a nearby mine. The Department is expected to meet with Harmony mine management and the leadership from Matjhabeng Local Municipality to find a solution.

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 26 APR 2022
• SOWETO – 25 APR 2022 (19H20) The Protea Magistrate’s Court has postponed the case against the two accused arrested in connection with the alleged murder of Kgomotso Diale. The victim was killed at Chicken Farm informal settlement in Kliptown during a protest by Operation Dudula. The accused have been remanded in custody until 04 May 2022. The National Prosecution Authority (NPA) Spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane stated that investigations are ongoing.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 25 APR 2022 (20H10) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to host the President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, on a State Visit to Pretoria on Thursday, 28 April 2022. This visit by President Embaló will provide an opportunity for South Africa and Guinea Bissau to strengthen bilateral, political, and socio-economic relations. The visit will also be a platform to reinvigorate several bilateral agreements that require closer implementation.
• JOHANNESBURG – 25 APR 2022 (22H00) Premier David Makhura has announced the appointment of Nomonde Nolutshungu as the Head of the Gauteng Department (HoD) of Health with effect from today, 25 April 2022. Prior to her appointment as the HoD of Health, Nolutshungu served as the Minister Counsellor for Health in Washington District of Columbia, United States of America (USA). Nolutshungu replaces Sibongile Zungu, who had been acting in the position from July 2021.
• LENASIA – 25 APR 2022 (23H20) UPDATE Demonstrations are ongoing on the R554 approaching the Plaza Board Centre in Lenasia. Protestors are barricading the roadway with burning tyres and debris in protest against ongoing service delivery issues in the area. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Authorities are on the scene. (19H50) Protest reported at the R554 and R553 intersection in Lenasia. Community members are protesting due to poor service delivery. The roads are barricaded with debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes and avoid the area. Police are on the scene.
• JOHANNESBURG – 26 APR 2022 (00H30) Sasol has announced the declaration of force majeure on the export of certain chemical products due to the impact of adverse weather conditions and floodings in the KwaZulu-Natal province. The declaration is expected to negatively affect the company’s fourth-quarter (Q4) of the 2022 Financial Year (FY22) volume outlook. The floods have led to an estimated R10 billion of damages to infrastructure across the affected region. The petrochemicals group has noted that its Q4 FY22 volume outlook is expected to be impacted subject to the extent of infrastructure damage and the timing of the recovery and restoration of key infrastructure and utilities. Sasol has stated that evaluation teams are yet to fully assess the material impact of the floods on its operations.
• GA-RANKUWA – 26 APR 2022 (03H10) Explosion reported at the Shell filling station in Zone 5, Ga-Rankuwa. Reports indicate that an unknown number of suspects have bombed a First National Bank (FNB) Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) situated at the Shell filling station. The suspects have fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. Authorities are on the scene. Further assessments of the situation are underway.
• CARLETONVILLE – 26 APR 2022 (06H00) The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) members are expected to hold a meeting with Sibanye-Stillwater’s gold operations management today, 26 April 2022, to discuss their response to the mining company’s final settlement. Sibanye-Stillwater is offering an R850 wage increase each year for three years for the lowest-paid employees. In addition, workers would get an R50 increase in the living-out allowance each year, while artisans, miners and officials would get a 5% annual increase for the duration of the multi-term agreement. The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have been on strike at Sibanye since 09 March 2022.
• CENTURION – 26 APR 2022 (07H40) Protest reported on the corner of Sterling Road and Rietspruit Road. Employees of Agrinet company are protesting due to labour-related matters. The demonstrators have obstructed the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• SOWETO – 26 APR 2022 (09H15) Protest expected at the Orlando Magistrate’s court today, 26 April 2022. Residents of Dube are expected to protest to demand the court to deny bail for Russell Zwane, who is accused of killing Tshepo Zwane and assaulting Nomsa Zwane. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• SOWETO – 26 APR 2022 (09H25) Protest reported on Modjadi Street, Klipspruit Valley Road and Union Avenue. Residents are protesting due to poor service delivery related to electricity. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 26 APR 2022
• DURBAN – 25 APR 2022 (21H40) The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has announced that nine sections of the KwaZulu-Natal passenger railway infrastructure have been severely damaged during recent floodings in the region. PRASA has stated that the railway crossing the Illovo Bridge requires extensive repairs, with tracks, fibre cables, electrical infrastructure, and substations damaged across the network. PRASA expects the cost of repairs to be approximately R2,9 billion. The Agency has stated that several areas remain inaccessible, with assessments scheduled to be conducted after the current water levels have subsided. PRASA has further noted that a multidisciplinary disaster management team has been assembled to assess the damage to the entity’s property and infrastructure and develop a recovery plan.
• PINETOWN – 26 APR 2022 (06H25) Protest reported on Hansdettman Highway and Wiltshire Road. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 26 APR 2022
• PHALABORWA – 26 APR 2022 (06H05) Protest expected on the R71 and R40 roads approaching Phalaborwa today, 26 April 2022. Phalaborwa Community Policing Forum (CPF) has received reports of planned protest action by community members in the area against labour-related issues. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and CPF officers are expected to be deployed to monitor the situation and provide relevant updates as the matter progresses.

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 26 APR 2022
• MIDDELBURG – 26 APR 2022 (07H10) President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to deliver a keynote address at the Freedom Day commemoration event on Wednesday, 27 April 2022, from 11H00 at the Talijaard Stadium. The event is expected to be held under the theme, Consolidate our Democratic Gains, to mark the country’s transition from the oppressive apartheid regime to a free democratic country.
• SABIE – 26 APR 2022 (07H30) Protest reported on the R532 towards Graskop. Simile residents are protesting due to poor service delivery. SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 26 APR 2022
• BRITS – 25 APR 2022 (18H00) The North West Police have issued a warning to motorists regarding an increase in hijackings in the Brits area. Spokesperson Adele Myburgh stated that truck drivers need to be vigilant and make their collections in public areas. This follows after a truck driver was attacked by two armed suspects while collecting goods near Mothotlung cemetery in Brits. Several similar incidents have been reported within February 2022.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 26 APR 2022
• KIMBERLEY – 26 APR 2022 (08H00) The Department of Water and Sanitation has issued a warning to communities, farmers and all water users in the lower Orange and lower Vaal River system to remain on high alert as rivers continue to rise due to heavy rainfall. The Department Spokesperson, Moholoeng Amogelang, stated that the Vaal Dam was spilling at 111.59% and discharging at 1,196 cubic metres per second after the recent rainfall. Amogelang added that the Katlani gauging point, which is just below the Vaal and Orange River confluence in Douglas, is at the height of 6.2 metres, the Upington gauging point at 5.6 metres and the Blouputs gauging point in the Orange River near the Augrabies waterfalls at three metres. Amogelang stated that the Provincial disaster management team will remain on high alert to attend to any situation related to floods.

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 26 APR 2022
• CAPE TOWN – 25 APR 2022 (21H45) Road closure reported on the M5 Northbound at the Berkley Road onramp in the vicinity of Maitland Garden Village, Cape Town. The road has been closed to allow road maintenance operations. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Authorities are on the scene.
• CAPE TOWN – 25 APR 2022 (22H15) The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on Parliament to suspend Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) Chairperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa pending an investigation into his conduct. The party has reportedly written to National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to request an urgent investigation and subsequent action taken against SCOPA Chairperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa. This follows after Hlengwa had recently been involved in a confrontation with Eskom Board Member Busisiwe Mavuso during a meeting of the SCOPA. Hlengwa reprimanded Mavuso for implying that the African National Congress (ANC) had been responsible for Eskom’s operational difficulties. DA Chief Whip Natasha Mazzone has stated that Hlengwa’s actions had been reprehensible. Mazzone has further requested that Hlengwa be reported to the Powers and Privileges Committee for a full investigation into his behaviour.
