SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 26 MAY 2022
• EAST LONDON – 26 MAY 2022 (00H25) The Public Works Minister, Patricia de Lille, announced that the Department is expected to construct bridges following the recent adverse weather in the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu-Natal regions on 01 June 2022. The announcement was made during Lille’s budget speech on Tuesday, 24 May 2022. The Department is set to construct approximately 50 bridges in Kwazulu-Natal and 20 in the Eastern Cape. The Department is expected to conduct assessments to assist in rebuilding damaged infrastructure.
• EAST LONDON – 26 MAY 2022 (01H30) The East London Magistrates Court is expected to deliver its bail application judgement on three suspects on Thursday, 26 May 2022. This follows after the suspects, Eastern Cape Chief Director of Community Safety Neil Naidoo, Kenny Govender and Matthew Pillay appeared before the Courts on Tuesday, 24 May 2022, for charges of corruption, theft and defeating the ends of justice. Additionally, the suspects have been arrested after allegedly bribing Investigating Officials with approximately R3.5 million to halt investigations into a National Police tender valued at an estimated R36 million. Naidoo has been accused of establishing communications between the Investigators and the businessmen on 12 March 2022. Reports indicate that Pillay and Govender have been arrested as they allegedly agreed to pay R3.5 million on 05 April 2022 during an undercover Police operation.
• MTHATHA – 26 MAY 2022 (06H10) The Police Minister Bheki Cele is set to visit the Mthatha Police station with Police management led by National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola today, 26 May 2022. The visit is expected to follow due to issues regarding service delivery of the South African Police Services (SAPS). This followed after the Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene, established search operations to apprehend the suspect involved in the Namhla Mtwa case. Mene appointed a Brigadier to oversee the case. The Brigadier is set to ensure regular communications and investigations are being conducted.

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 26 MAY 2022
• THEUNISSEN – 26 MAY 2022 (16H25) The Theunissen Magistrate Court has postponed the inciting violence case against the Mayor of Masilonyana Local Municipality, Dimakatso Modise and four co-accused to 09 June 2022. The matter was postponed to allow the state to provide the defence lawyers with the contents of the docket. This follows after a violent protest in 2021 at Masilo and Makeleketla in Winburg and Theunissen, where a house belonging to the parents of the former Mayor, Kunatu Stephen Koalane, was set alight.

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 26 MAY 2022
• BRAKPAN – 26 MAY 2022 (06H10) Protest reported on Black Road. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. The demonstrators are protesting due to service delivery. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• BOKSBURG – 26 MAY 2022 (06H50) Protest reported at the intersection of Main Reef Road and Field Road. The demonstrators are protesting due to poor service delivery related to electricity. Reports indicate that the demonstrators have stopped and looted a truck. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 26 MAY 2022 (07H15) Cash in Transit (CIT) robbery reported outside the Takealot Pickup Point in Hatfield. Reports indicate that five unidentified suspects have robbed an armoured vehicle of an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries have been reported. The suspects have fled the scene. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
• CENTURION – 26 MAY 2022 (07H45) UPDATE Road closure reported at the intersection of Sterling Road and Rietspruit Road in the vicinity of CMTI Group due to ongoing protest. (07H05) Protest reported on Sterling Road in the vicinity of Agrinet Samrand. The demonstrators are protesting due to salary disputes. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with rocks and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 26 MAY 2022 (08H30) Protest expected nationwide from Tuesday, 14 June 2022, until Friday, 17 June 2022, against the foreign national’s employment within South Africa. The demonstrators are expected to embark on a nationwide protest to denounce the employment of foreign nationals who are employed as courier drivers, labour workers and security agents in the country. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police will be deployed to various areas during the protests.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 26 MAY 2022 (08H45) The Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele, is expected to brief the media today, 26 May 2022, from 09H00, on the outcomes of the Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, 25 May 2022.
• JOHANNESBURG – 26 MAY 2022 (08H35) The National Union of Mineworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) has announced that it has signed a one year 6.5% wage agreement with ArcelorMittal SA. This follows after NUMSA members embarked on a protest from Wednesday, 11 May 2022, to demand increased salaries and improved working conditions. NUMSA stated that allowances will also be increased by 6.5%. The increase in wages and allowances will be backdated to 01 April 2022 and paid in June 2022.
• MABOPANE – 26 MAY 2022 (10H05) Eskom has condemned the recent attacks on the employees in the province. This follows after three armed suspects attacked and robbed Eskom technicians while inspecting meter boxes in Mabopane Block E on Tuesday, 24 May 2022. Two other attacks took place in Mabopane and Soweto over the past three days.
• TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 26 MAY 2022 (11H45) UPDATE Demonstrations reported outside the SARS office in Brooklyn. Members of the public are advised to be vigilant. (10H40) Protest expected by members affiliated with the Public Servants Association of South Africa (PSA) and the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) today, 26 May 2022, at the South African Revenue Service SARS in Pretoria. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand a 12% salary increase. The demonstrators are expected to hand over a memorandum of demands. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
• VEREENIGING – 26 MAY 2022 (13H45) Taxi operators from Vereeniging taxi rank are patrolling outside General Smuts High school in Vereeniging. This follows after members of a gang allegedly attempted to harass learners. Taxi operators reportedly gathered at the school after members of an unknown gang arrived on Wednesday, 25 May 2022, at the school, in support of learners who are allegedly affiliated to their gang. This happened at the same time when parents were protesting outside the school, demanding that 30 particular learners who are alleged gang members be expelled for bullying other learners. Parents have been protesting against violence at the school from Monday, 23 May 2022.
• JOHANNESBURG – 26 MAY 2022 (16H00) Anglo American Platinum and three unions signed a five-year wage agreement today, 26 May 2022. The unions include the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), and the United Association of South Africa (UASA). The wage agreement increases to salary and salary-related allowances, which will increase the total labour cost-to-company, on average, by 6.6% per annum over the five-year period. Anglo American Platinums’ lowest-paid employees will receive an annual increase in basic salary of 7.5% or R1,150 in year one, increasing to 7.5% or R1,500 by year five. The agreement can be revisited if inflation rises beyond a certain level.

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 26 MAY 2022
• PIETERMARITZBURG – 26 MAY 2022 (00H55) Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke has announced that corruption incidents in the flood relief funding for Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) are set to be referred to the Hawks, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). The reference to other agencies is expected to prevent corrupt procurements from the relief funding. Additionally, the reference is set to ensure the funding is used for relief efforts in the province. Maluleke noted that a team comprising of members from the Information Systems Management, Forensics and Fraud Detection unit, engineers and quantity surveyors have been deployed to KZN.
• PIETERMARITZBURG – 26 MAY 2022 (08H50) Protest reported outside the Siyaya Cash and Carry Store on Pietermaritz Street. The demonstrators are protesting due to a civilian shot inside the store. The reason for the shooting is unknown at this stage. Stone-throwing reported. The situation is volatile. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• RICHARDS BAY – 26 MAY 2022 (11H00) Protest reported at the intersection of the R34/ John Ross Highway and R619 Arboretum. The demonstrators have obstructed the road. The reason for the protest is unknown at this stage. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
• NEWCASTLE – 26 MAY 2022 (14H00) Operation Dudula is expected to launch a branch in Newcastle at the Trim Park on Saturday, 28 May 2022, at 10H00. Operation Dudula is known to act against illegal foreign nationals and narcotic trading. Motorists are advised to be vigilant. Police will be monitoring the situation.
• VERULAM – 26 MAY 2022 (16H30) The body of the former Verulam Mayor, Manna Naidoo, has been discovered today, 26 May 2022. This follows after Naidoo was reported missing after a residential robbery on Panere Farm in Canelands on Wednesday, 25 May 2022. The body has been found with bullet wounds in a cane field in the Canelands area. The Police have launched a murder investigation.

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 26 MAY 2022
• HLOGOTLOU – 26 MAY 2022 (08H55) Protest expected by the members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) today, 26 May 2022, from 09H00 at the Hlogotlou Police Station. The EFF members are expected to protest to demand the Police to arrest the suspects who kidnapped Gift Malope. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to the area.
• POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 26 MAY 2022 (15H30) Officials implicated in the VBS maladministration and corruption case appeared in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court today, 26 May 2022. The arrested officials include former Mayor of Thulamela Municipality in Limpopo, Avhashoni Tshifhango and Municipal Manager Hlengani Maluleke. The Municipal Manager invested R30-million of municipality money into VBS in contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act. The officials have been granted bail of R30,000 each. The court has postponed the case to 20 July 2022 to set a pre-trial date. At least 20 municipalities in Limpopo, North West and Gauteng lost R1.6-billion after illegally investing with the bank.

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 26 MAY 2022
• KANYAMAZANE – 26 MAY 2022 (00H00) The South African Police Services’ Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has announced the establishment of a search operation in the KaNyamazane vicinity. The operation is set to follow after the Courts issued a warrant of arrest for Rassie Nkuna. This follows after Nkuna allegedly killed Marcia Mazibuko and a Police Sergeant Pretty Mazibuko on 15 May 2022. The Hawks have urged the public to provide any information regarding the apprehension of Nkane.
• WITBANK/EMALAHLENI – 26 MAY 2022 (07H00) Protest reported on Old Bethal Road in the vicinity of Duvha Power Station. The demonstrators have obstructed the road with burning tyres and debris. Stone-throwing has been reported. The situation is volatile. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTH WEST – 26 MAY 2022
• STELLA – 26 MAY 2022 (14H15) Protest expected at the Ratlou Local Municipality building in Stella on Friday, 27 May 2022, at 10H00. Community members will hand over a memorandum of demands to the Premier and the Member of Executive Council (MEC). Demonstrators are expected to close businesses and the N18 between Vryburg and Mahikeng from 07H00 until the Premier and MEC arrive at the municipality building. Motorists are advised to avoid the area during the protest. Police will be monitoring the situation.

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 26 MAY 2022
• JAN KEMPDORP – 26 MAY 2022 (15H00) The Jan Kempdorp Magistrate’s Court has postponed the sexual assault case against Aobakwe Johnny to Friday, 27 May 2022. Johnny will use the time to appoint a new legal representative. Community members are expected to protest outside the court against the bail application on Friday. Motorists are advised to be vigilant during the hearing.

SOUTH AFRICA – WESTERN CAPE – 26 MAY 2022
• CAPE TOWN – 26 MAY 2022 (06H00) The City of Cape Town has announced that an Ordinary Meeting of the Council of the Cape Town is scheduled to be held at 10H00 today, 26 May 2022, in the Podium Block, Civic Centre, Cape Town. This follows ahead of the Special Meeting of the Council at 10H00 on Tuesday, 31 May 2022, during which the annual budget for the 2022/2023 to 2024/2025 financial years is expected to be considered.
• CAPE TOWN – 26 MAY 2022 (06H05) Protest expected at the Western Cape Treasury today, 26 May 2022, from 10H30 until 14H00. The Fight Inequality Alliance South Africa Association has called on members to participate in a protest against the World Economic Forum. The demonstrators will be holding a demonstration under #TaxTheRich. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant for the duration of the protest. Police will be deployed to the scene.
