  • COFIMVABA – 28 FEB 2022 (06H00) Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, is expected to visit Cofimvaba to conduct an oversight visit on work done by the South African Roads Agency (SANRAL) today, 28 February 2022, from 10H00. Mbalula is expected to officially open the R61 Bridge in Tsomo. This follows after heavy rains damaged the R61.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 28 FEB 2022 (07H35) UPDATE Truck drivers are barricading the N2. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.  (06H50) Protest reported on the intersection of R367 and Chelsea Road in the vicinity of Caltex fuel station. The demonstrators are blocking trucks in the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • EAST LONDON – 28 FEB 2022 (09H10) Protest reported on the R102 in the vicinity of Walter Sisulu University. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

  • WELKOM – 28 FEB 2022 (01H00) The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is expected to conduct the province’s first Special Council meeting on Monday, 28 February 2022, as Premier Sisi Ntombela is set to deliver the State Of The Province (SOPA) address at the Molemela Indoor Sports Centre. The Municipality has stated that the Special Council meeting is scheduled to be held at the Council Chambers, Civic Centre, in Welkom.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 28 FEB 2022 (09H50) Protest expected by the members of the Mangaung Concerned Community (MCC) today, 28 February 2022, at the Molemela Indoor Sports Centre. The MCC members are expected to protest during the Premier’s State Of The Province Address (SOPA). The members will be protesting against all the injustices in this province. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the situation.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – GAUTENG – 28 FEB 2022

  • Protest expected at the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI) Road Freight House in Johannesburg today, 28 February 2022. All Truck Drivers Forum (ATDF) and Allied South Africa members are expected to embark on a march to the bargaining council offices to deliver a Memorandum of Demands (MoD). This follows as truck drivers have launched industrial action from Sunday, 27 February 2022, to demand the immediate removal of all foreign national truck drivers from the freight industry. Several national and provincial routes are expected to be affected by the nationwide shutdown, including the N2 and N3.
  • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 28 FEB 2022 (06H35) Protest reported on the R513/Brits Road in Wonderpark. The demonstrators have blockaded the road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 28 FEB 2022

  • DURBAN – 27 FEB 2022 (21H20) Peaceful protest expected by Durban University of Technology (DUT) students at the DUT Steve Biko Campus from Tuesday, 01 March 2022. This follows after several DUT students have been denied access to the DUT campus and student accommodation due to their failure to present COVID-19 vaccination certificates. Motorists are advised to avoid the Steve Biko Gate 3 entrance during the demonstrations.
  • PIETERMARITZBURG – 28 FEB 2022 (08H00) UPDATE The ATDF members are expected to hold a motorcade to the Bargaining Council Offices from 09H30. Motorists are advised to avoid Ritchie Road, Washington Road, CB Downes Road and Halstead. The demonstrators are expected to disperse from 13H00. (06H15) Protest expected at the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry in Mkondeni, Pietermaritzburg today, 28 February 2022. Truck operators affiliated with the All Truck Drivers Forum (ATDF) and Allied South Africa are expected to embark on a march to the bargaining council offices to deliver a Memorandum of Demands (MoD). This follows as truck drivers have embarked on a stay-away demonstration from Sunday, 27 February 2022, to protest against the employment of foreign nationals in the trucking industry. Several national and provincial routes are expected to be affected by the nationwide shutdown, including major national routes such as the N2 and N3. Truck operators are demanding the immediate removal of all foreign national truck drivers from the freight industry.
  • ENTABA – 28 FEB 2022 (09H05) UPDATE The Umzumbe Municipality Mayor has addressed the community members. The demonstrations have been dispersed. SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 28 FEB 2022

  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 28 FEB 2022 (02H00) The Limpopo Provincial Government has provided environmental authorisation to a proposal to allocate more than $10 billion for the construction of a 4,600-megawatt (mW) coal power plant. The authorisation follows the establishment of the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone, in which several Chinese companies have pledged to invest. The Trade, Industry and Competition Ministry has stated that the project is expected to significantly improve the province’s unemployment rates. However, the project has not been factored into the country’s emissions target and is expected to be opposed at a national level by authorities and activists due to concerns regarding air pollution and other environmental impacts.

  • SCHWEIZER-RENEKE – 28 FEB 2022 (09H40) Premier Bushy Maape and the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari, are expected to visit the family of Ntlatseng at Ipelegeng Township near Schweizer Reneke today, 28 February 2022. This follows after an accident where a taxi carrying 19 people was involved in a head-on collision with a truck on the R34 road between Schweizer Reneke and Bloemhof on Sunday.

  • KIMBERLEY – 28 FEB 2022 (06H05) Protest reported on the R31 in the vicinity of the Truckstop between the N8 and Peter Mokaba Road. Truck operators are obstructing the roadway to traffic. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Authorities are on the scene.
