  • COFIMVABA – 28 FEB 2022 (06H00) Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, is expected to visit Cofimvaba to conduct an oversight visit on work done by the South African Roads Agency (SANRAL) today, 28 February 2022, from 10H00. Mbalula is expected to officially open the R61 Bridge in Tsomo. This follows after heavy rains damaged the R61.
  • PORT ELIZABETH/GQEBERHA – 28 FEB 2022 (07H35) UPDATE Truck drivers are barricading the N2.   • EAST LONDON – 28 FEB 2022 (18H00) Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema is expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 01 March 2022, after the State prosecutor resigned from the case. Malema made a brief appearance with co-accused Adriaan Snyman, who is a private security company owner today, 28 February 2022. State Advocate Joel Cesar, who has now taken over the case, asked for the postponement, saying he still needs to go through the statements and consult with witnesses. Malema’s defence has argued against any further postponement to accommodate the newly appointed State prosecutor. Malema is accused of firing an automatic rifle at the EFF’s fifth-anniversary celebrations at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane in 2018. Malema is facing charges of illegal possession of firearms, contravention of the Firearms Control Act, the illegal possession of ammunition, and reckless endangerment to persons or property.

  • WELKOM – 28 FEB 2022 (01H00) The Matjhabeng Local Municipality is expected to conduct the province’s first Special Council meeting on Monday, 28 February 2022, as Premier Sisi Ntombela is set to deliver the State Of The Province (SOPA) address at the Molemela Indoor Sports Centre. The Municipality has stated that the Special Council meeting is scheduled to be held at the Council Chambers, Civic Centre, in Welkom.

  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 28 FEB 2022 (15H45) UPDATE The Mangaung Concerned Community (MCC) is expected to meet with the Free State Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Mxolisi Dukwana, on Tuesday, 01 March 2022, to discuss the way forward on issues of service delivery. This follows after a brief meeting between the two parties outside the Dr Molemela Indoor Sports Centre today, where MCC members staged a protest. Community members tried to force their way inside this centre in Bloemfontein, where the Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela was delivering the SOPA.  (09H50) Protest expected by the members of the Mangaung Concerned Community (MCC) today, 28 February 2022, at the Molemela Indoor Sports Centre. The MCC members are expected to protest during the Premier’s State Of The Province Address (SOPA). The members will be protesting against all the injustices in this province.   • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 28 FEB 2022 (11H50) Protest expected by the members affiliated with the South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) on Tuesday, 01 March 2022, at the Department of Public Enterprises from 09H00. SACCA and NUMSA members are expected to protest against corruption and job losses. The demonstrators are expected to hand over a memorandum of demands.   • TSHWANE/PRETORIA – 28 FEB 2022 (13H00) Protest expected by the members of the United Eswatini Diaspora on Wednesday, 02 March 2022 at the Eswatini Embassy. The demonstrators are expected to gather at the United States of America (USA) Embassy and march to the Eswatini Embassy. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand the end of the Tinkundla System. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • KRUGERSDORP – 28 FEB 2022 (13H50) Cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery reported on the R563 and N14 intersection near the Engen Petrol Station in Oaktree. Several suspects are attempting to rob an armoured vehicle. Motorists are advised to avoid the area. Police are on the scene.
  • ALBERTON – 28 FEB 2022 (14H00) UPDATE Members allegedly affiliated with the ATDF have shot the tyres of two trucks in the vicinity of Sasol Petrol Station and Volvo truck and bus centre on Bosworth Street and M61. The members fled the scene. Motorists and truck drivers are advised to avoid the area.  (09H00) Protest reported on R554/Heidelberg Road in Alrode. Truck drivers have barricaded the road.   • JOHANNESBURG – 28 FEB 2022 (14H45) Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi released the National Labour Migration Policy (NLMP) and Employment Services Amendment Bill for public comment today, 28 February 2022. The NLMP will introduce quotas on the total number of documented foreign nationals with work visas that can be employed in agriculture, hospitality and tourism, as well as construction, along with other sectors. The Minister of Labour will set the limit on foreign nationals, and the quotas will differ per occupation, sector or region. The proposed new legislations will be accompanied by amendments to the Small Business Act, which will limit foreign nationals from establishing small and medium-sized enterprises and trading in some sectors of the economy. This will include a list of sectors where foreign nationals cannot be allocated business visas.

  • JOHANNESBURG – 28 FEB 2022 (18H10) UPDATE Demonstrators delivered the MoD to the National Bargaining Council management. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police are monitoring the situation. (15H00) The ATDF and Allied South Africa members are outside the National Bargaining Council offices in Braamfontein. The demonstrators are expected to hand over their MoD. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.  (06H10) Protest expected at the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry (NBCRFLI) Road Freight House in Johannesburg today, 28 February 2022. All Truck Drivers Forum (ATDF) and Allied South Africa members are expected to embark on a march to the bargaining council offices to deliver a Memorandum of Demands (MoD). This follows as truck drivers have launched industrial action from Sunday, 27 February 2022, to demand the immediate removal of all foreign national truck drivers from the freight industry. Several national and provincial routes are expected to be affected by the nationwide shutdown, including the N2 and N3.

(06H15) Protest expected at the National Bargaining Council for the Road Freight and Logistics Industry in Mkondeni, Pietermaritzburg today, 28 February 2022. Truck operators affiliated with the All Truck Drivers Forum (ATDF) and Allied South Africa are expected to embark on a march to the bargaining council offices to deliver a Memorandum of Demands (MoD). This follows as truck drivers have embarked on a stay-away demonstration from Sunday, 27 February 2022, to protest against the employment of foreign nationals in the trucking industry. Several national and provincial routes are expected to be affected by the nationwide shutdown, including major national routes such as the N2 and N3. Truck operators are demanding the immediate removal of all foreign national truck drivers from the freight industry

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 28 FEB 2022

  • POLOKWANE/ PIETERSBURG – 28 FEB 2022 (02H00) The Limpopo Provincial Government has provided environmental authorisation to a proposal to allocate more than $10 billion for the construction of a 4,600-megawatt (mW) coal power plant. The authorisation follows the establishment of the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone, in which several Chinese companies have pledged to invest. The Trade, Industry and Competition Ministry has stated that the project is expected to significantly improve the province’s unemployment rates. However, the project has not been factored into the country’s emissions target and is expected to be opposed at a national level by authorities and activists due to concerns regarding air pollution and other environmental impacts.

  • SCHWEIZER-RENEKE – 28 FEB 2022 (09H40) Premier Bushy Maape and the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari, are expected to visit the family of Ntlatseng at Ipelegeng Township near Schweizer Reneke today, 28 February 2022. This follows after an accident where a taxi carrying 19 people was involved in a head-on collision with a truck on the R34 road between Schweizer Reneke and Bloemhof on Sunday.
