SOUTH AFRICA – EASTERN CAPE – 28 MAR 2022

  • EAST LONDON – 28 MAR 2022 (03H10) The Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) has welcomed a recent decision by Water Minister Senzo Mchunu to dissolve the Amatola Water Board. This follows after the Board had been dissolved after investigations found the board members unfit to hold office. The investigations revealed unstable leadership, maladministration of funds, and delays in completing water-related projects, among others.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – FREE STATE – 28 MAR 2022

  • SENEKAL – 28 MAR 2022 (07H50) Two suspects are expected to appear at the Senekal Magistrate’s Court today, 28 March 202, following their arrest by Police for attempting to hijack a fuel tanker on the N5, outside Paul Roux, at midnight on Thursday, 24 March 2022. They face charges of attempted truck hijacking and another charge related to being in possession of a radio reception blocking device.
  • BLOEMFONTEIN – 28 MAR 2022 (15H30) Eskom announced that Free State Municipalities owe R16-billion for services rendered. This threatens the security of supply to the citizens residing in these supply areas. Eskom stated that it could not continue to maintain infrastructure and supply in these areas. Eskom calls on all the Municipalities to settle their debt and fulfil their financial obligations.
  • VIRGINIA – 28 MAR 2022 (16H10) The South African Central Energy Fund (CEF) is expected to invest R1-billion for a 10% stake in Tetra4, the Renergen-owned gas producer. Tetra4 is developing a project near Virginia in the Free State, which is estimated to be worth over R1-trillion. The CEF is a state-owned diversified energy company that reports to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy. Virginia will play a critical role in the future supply of clean energy as well as helium.

  • JOHANNESBURG – 28 MAR 2022 (11H20) The African National Congress (ANC) Treasurer General, Paul Mashatile, is expected to hold a post-National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting today, 28 March 2022, from 14H00 at the Luthuli House. This follows after an ordinary session of the NEC held from Friday, 25 March 2022, until Sunday, 27 March 2022.
  • ROODEPOORT – 28 MAR 2022 (11H35) UPDATE The Magistrate Court has granted Dlamini bail of R1,500 and will appear in court on Friday, 27 May 2022. (09H35) Protest reported outside the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court by members of the Operation Dudula movement ahead of Operation Dudula Leader Nhlanhla Lux Dlamini’s bail application. The demonstrators have barricaded the area. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • GERMISTON – 28 MAR 2022 (13H50) Road closure reported on the N3 at the Geldenhuys interchange in Elandsfontein. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene. Recovery is in progress.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 28 MAR 2022 (15H00) UPDATE The North Gauteng High Court has granted the City of Tshwane an interdict against the unlawful march organised by the EFF. The High Court has ruled that the EFF is to disperse immediately and are interdicted from performing any acts of destruction of City property. (12H40) City of Tshwane employees have started gathering at Princess Park ahead of a march to Tshwane House.  (05H00) Protest expected at the City of Tshwane Municipality today, 28 March 2022, in Pretoria Central from 10H00. Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) supporters and City of Tshwane employees are expected to conduct a march from Princess Park to the City of Tshwane Municipality building on Bosman Street. The demonstration is being organised to demand the reinstatement and back pay of waste and capacity workers and the insourcing of security guards and cleaners by the Municipality. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant when travelling in the affected areas during the march. Authorities are expected to be deployed to monitor the event.
  • BEDFORDVIEW – 28 MAR 2022 (16H00) Road closure reported on the N3 in Bedfordview. The road is closed due to a heavy motor vehicle accident. Traffic is delayed on the N12 and R24 towards the N3 South ramp at the Gillooly’s interchange. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 28 MAR 2022 (17H45) UPDATE City Power stated that technicians will be unable to access the tunnels today, 28 March 2022, due to safety concerns. Technicians may be able to access the tunnels on Tuesday afternoon, 29 March 2022, depending on the City’s environmental services safety inspection. City Power teams are working on strategies to partially restore electricity to some affected areas. (14H20) City Power is attending to an outage from the Fordsburg substation affecting Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) and Selby. The outage is due to a fire in underground tunnels at Ntemi Piliso Street and Anderson Street. The fire caused two main lines to trip at the CBD and Selby substationS. City Power Senior Management, engineers and technicians are on site of the underground tunnels. Recovery and restoration plans are being drawn, with alternative power supplies assessed. Work underground will only start once the tunnels are declared safe.
  • JOHANNESBURG – 28 MAR 2022 (18H15) UPDATE Demonstrators have dispersed on Heidelberg Road/ M31 in City Deep. The road is open to traffic. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. (06H20) Protest reported on the Heidelberg Road/M31 in City Deep. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • TSHWANE/ PRETORIA – 28 MAR 2022 (18H25) UPDATE Demonstrators have delivered their memorandum of demands to the SAPS Head Office. Motorists are advised to remain vigilant. Police are monitoring the situation. (10H45) Peaceful protest reported on Pretorius Street in the vicinity of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Head Office. The International Pentecost Holiness Church (IPHC) members are protesting against police injustice and harassment by members of the SAPS. The demonstrators have blocked the area. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – KWAZULU-NATAL – 28 MAR 2022

  • ULUNDI – 28 MAR 2022 (08H55) Protest expected today, 28 March 2022, at the Zululand District Municipality offices from 09H00. Community members are expected to gather at the Ulundi Old Parliament and march to the offices. The demonstrators are expected to protest to demand the Executive Mayor, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, to step down. The demonstrators are expected to deliver a memorandum of demand. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the situation.
  • DURBAN – 28 MAR 2022 (17H00) A water outage is scheduled in Durban Central Business District (CBD) from 19H00 till 06H00 on Tuesday, 29 March 2022. The time will be used to tie in a steel pipe into the existing line on the corner of Anton Lembede Street and Alexandra Street. As a result, the Motille Reservoir will be affected.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – LIMPOPO – 28 MAR 2022

  • THOHOYANDOU – 28 MAR 2022 (08H40) The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the Vhembe region has expressed satisfaction that its members are united and concluded their conference without registering any disputes. The Youth League region is among those that convened over the weekend ahead of their provincial elective conference in April 2022.  The ANCYL in Vhembe has elected Tumelo Seleka as its Chairperson, Andisani Mathelemusa as the Deputy Chairperson, Galaba Mabasa as secretary. Luambo Lusani has been elected as deputy secretary, and Elelwani Lihaiwa is the new treasurer. Mabasa stated that they intend to expand to 30 000 regional members and are also looking forward to renewing the organisation’s culture at the branch level.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – MPUMALANGA – 28 MAR 2022

  • BUSHBUCKRIDGE – 28 MAR 2022 (17H15) Police have arrested a suspect for being in possession of a stolen Police firearm with live ammunition. Police tracked the stolen firearm to the suspect’s residence after a Gauteng-based officer was robbed on Saturday, 26 March 2022. The officer stopped at a post office in Shatale, near Bushbuckridge, at 01H00 and was robbed by two people. The suspect is expected to appear in the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court. Police are pursuing the two suspects who robbed the officer.
  • MALELANE – 28 MAR 2022 (17H20) Road closure reported on the N4 in Malelane. The road is closed due to a motor vehicle accident. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Emergency services are on the scene. Recovery is in progress.

  • POTCHEFSTROOM – 28 MAR 2022 (13H10) UPDATE Police have dispersed demonstrations. The Rysmierbult Road has been reopened for traffic flow. Motorists are advised to be vigilant.  (07H00) Violent demonstrations reported on the Rysmierbult road N14 T-junction. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area. (06H45) Protest reported on the R501 in the Rysmierbult area. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
  • MAHIKENG – 28 MAR 2022 (15H45) Ten suspects are expected to appear in the North West High Court today, 28 March 2022. The suspects are facing charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of firearms, and ammunition. The suspects have been arrested by the Police following a failed cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on the R503 between Lichtenburg and Mafikeng in March 2020.

 

SOUTH AFRICA – NORTHERN CAPE – 28 MAR 2022

  • KOOPMANSFONTEIN – 28 MAR 2022 (14H45) The Department of Roads and Public Works has closed the R31 between Koopmansfontein and Middlepos with immediate effect. The road is closed due to flooding. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

  • CAPE TOWN – 28 MAR 2022 (06H30) UPDATE Police have advised motorists to avoid the Malibongwe Drive and the Du Noon area following protests in the area. The situation remains volatile. Police are monitoring the area. (22H20) Road closure reported on the M12 between Potsdam Road and Sandown Road, Du Noon. The road has been closed due to the ongoing protest action. Community members are protesting due to housing disputes. Demonstrators are reportedly throwing stones at vehicles. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. (21H45) Protest reported on the M12/ Malibongwe Drive and Rivergate Drive in the vicinity of Cape Farms, Cape Town. Community members are barricading the roadway with burning tyres and debris.   • CAPE TOWN – 28 MAR 2022 (09H10) Protest expected by the Democratic Alliance (DA) members on Wednesday, 30 March 2022, at the Parliament building from 11H15. The DA members are expected to protest in support of the motion of no confidence against Cabinet members. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police will be deployed to monitor the area.
  • CAPE TOWN – 28 MAR 2022 (11H30) UPDATE Road closure reported on Malibongwe Drive between Potsdam Road and Sandown Road due to protest. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes.  (09H30) Protest reported on Malibongwe Drive/M12. The demonstrators are marching towards Pioneer valley and  Parklands. The demonstrators have barricaded the road with stones and debris. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Police have been dispatched.
  • KNYSNA – 28 MAR 2022 (14H30) A scheduled power outage is expected in Knysna on Tuesday, 29 March 2022, from 09H00 till 16H00. Areas that will be affected include Geelhout Street, Piramid Street, and Swarthout Street. The time will be used to do alterations to the electrical mains.
  • CAPE TOWN – 28 MAR 2022 (16H30) The Western Cape High Court has dismissed the application to hold a secret ballot at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s vote of no confidence on Wednesday, 30 March 2022. Therefore, the motion of no confidence will be an open ballot. There is no court order preventing the National Assembly from continuing with the vote of no confidence.
  • CAPE TOWN – 28 MAR 2022 (18H00) Protest reported on Epping Avenue in Leonsdale. Demonstrators are barricading the road with burning tyres and debris. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. Police are on the scene.
