The United States (US) Government has issued additional warnings to civilian airlines operating in the Kenyan airspace to remain vigilant of possible attacks by militant groups. The US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has stated that the advisory is informed by assessments that the Somalia-based militant group, al-Shabaab, remains an active security threat in Kenya and remains in possession of weapons adept at targeting aircraft at low altitudes of 25,000 feet. This increases the risk of arrival and departure flights on the standard aviation route through northeastern Kenya and Somalia. The air routes included in the FAA warning include flights connecting Nairobi and far eastern countries such as Dubai, India, and China, among other destinations serviced by major airlines.
